Gay marriage New York 2011

Here's what Mayor Bloomberg had to say:

New York Mayor Michael Bloomberg, who courted Republican state senators to approve the bill, called the vote a "historic triumph for equality and freedom."

"In recent weeks, I have had many conversations with our State Senators. I emphasized that not only is marriage equality consistent with bedrock American principles, but it is also consistent with bedrock Republican Party principles of liberty and freedom -- and the Republicans who stood up today for those principles will long be remembered for their courage, foresight, and wisdom. In fact, 10 or 20 or 30 years from now, I believe they will look back at this vote as one of their finest, proudest moments."

Shouldn't you be crying your little eyes out right now?

In your own words, if the Senate passed the Marriage Equality Act with all of the religious protections included, it would be worse than not passing the bill at all.

The stuff they wanted put in didn't get in. So yes, I can celebrate.

To everyone who doubted this would happen, to quote Brian Griffiin, "Not to say I told you so but YAH IN YO FUCKIN FACE!!!"

But this really is great. Thanks to everyone who helped out on this effort. It's a true example of grassroots lobbying at its finest.

I'm gonna call you an idiot, datjacob...and I think that we're BOTH very, very happy that I can do that!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

My waterworks and tears have been turned on...this is a big moment in our history.

Right now i'm the happiest idiot in America!!! !!!!!!!!!!! I don't live in New York but last year my state Maryland just missed marriage equality by a handful of votes but i'm very excited about tonight as i'm sure we all are. Hopefully Maryland is next than The World.

That's right! This is coming through just about the time gay pride is coming up in most of the country. How excellent!

Congratulations to the state of New York and to all her gay citizens! I could not be more pleased. :D

HAPPY PRIDE, EVERYBODY!

SUGGESTION TO CORNY OR OTHER PEOPLE WHO MAY BE ABLE TO EFFECT SUCH A CHANGE: What about having a TEXT COLOR option which will turn the text into RAINBOW colors?? Besides being very appropriate, it would certainly look very cool.

I just posted this on another website which is not a social/discussion group as such, but is more or less a group which plans gay gatherings and events in northern California. Therefore, my note suggesting that my post may actually be outside the scope of that website...

I'm up late celebrating - or, at least, my mind won't shut down. This is a very happy day for many millions of people, including many people who live far from New York, because this is the FIRST time something has happened on this issue which confirms the inevitability of it eventually becoming the law of the Land. The public gives a new law a lot more "cred" if it's actually passed by a legislature and signed by the Big Cheese, than if it's merely "dictated" in a high-level courtroom, and that's what has now happened in a VERY major U. S. state.

The current and upcoming PRIDE events this summer and beyond, will indeed be happy ones. After the big victory in New York a few hours ago, there is a lot to begin celebrating this weekend. As goes New York, so goes the Nation...eventually. New York is the first MAJOR state to pass full marriage rights BY LEGISLATION, AND signed by the Governor. (Were ANY of the other State same-sex marriage rights passed by legislation??) This law even managed to jump the hurdle of being passed by the State Senate, which is a chamber controlled by Republicans, which tells me that some Republicans are starting to see the writing on the wall, and are choosing to be on the correct side of history. No gay rights bill, to my knowledge, has ever survived a Republican-dominated legislative chamber in the US before, other than ones mandating some individually-enumerated civil rights such as employment or housing. I don't know how many new rights are given to same-sex couples in NY now with this new law, but I'm sure the number is considerable - somebody figured out that if the same law were to apply from Sea-To-Shining-Sea, that Federal law would bestow more than 1,100 new rights on same-sex couples. I realize this message isn't particularly within the mission statement of this site, but I'm celebrating, I'm up late, and I wanted to share. I doubt that anybody here is UNAWARE of what happened early on the weekend of June 24-26, 2011 in Albany, New York...I believe this event was paid much more attention nationally than any other gay-event that has ever happened in U. S. history. (Remember, as Proposition 8 was happening in California, the entire Nation was also watching perhaps the most important Presidential election ever at the same time, not to mention Congress, so attentions were divided!)

California, your time is coming...and it's near...hold on to your hopes! New York is FAR too large to go unnoticed by the people of the USA. They, including some of the naysayers and anti-gay activists, etc. who made sure that Proposition 8 passed, will look at New York and actually *SEE* that the entire State doesn't implode and shrivel up and fall off the East Coast, just because more people can get married. As it becomes more and more obvious that nothing bad came of it, courts and legislatures will come more and more to their senses - and there is no question that this event has put a few more nails in the Federal Coffin that is called DOMA. I am very happy! I hope it was OK to share this here.

Have an amazing pride weekend guys!! We're going to enjoy ours to the fullest

I'm so proud of my state. All you guys who want to marry should come visit us. We don't have a residency requirement to issue marriage licenses.

A great day to be from New York. I never thought it would get to the floor for a vote the way things were looking. All this shit over religious exemptions was just a last ditch effort to kill the bill by the religious right, because they knew it would pass. It's also nice knowing that Alessi, who is my state senator, was willing to stand up for what is right. He's got my vote next year.

This vote should now pave the way for other rational and progressive states to move forward to pass laws that bring the US into line with the rest of the civilized western copuntries.

I wish we could say we could do it, but I'm afraid we will stay in the uncivilized section of the US. MAYBE after the 2012 election.
