Gay marriage New York 2011

The tally is now 30 in support! The three undecided Democrats have come foreward in support as has one Republican, Jim Alesi. In addition, at least 6 Republicans have been identified as "leaning Yes".

That's great news. http://www.nypost.com/p/news/local/goper_switch_huge_boost_to_gay_marriage_4PnBl9KMqtSzATugRXiVPM

But doesn't that mean we still need two more Republicans?

It was like pulling teeth just to get this one.

Regardless, they better hold another vote. None of that canceling the vote Maryland style. If there is a vote then we know where we stand whatever the outcome.

I'm not holding my breath on this one...

Cuomo aide: votes are there to pass marriage equality:

http://www.nydailynews.com/blogs/da...-says-gay-marriage-vote-should-come-this-week

"It was like pulling teeth just to get this one."

Supposedly a secret survey was conducted which showed support in many Republican districts.

I'm pretty confident Greg Ball is a Yes, given how he's been public about pushing Cuomo to include religious protections in the bill. He wouldn't be pushing the issue at all if he was never going to vote Yes.

Lanza indicated his mother strongly urged him before she died to vote Yes to gay marriage. Pretty powerful for him to admit this, and he will risk looking quite unlikable if he votes No.

In addition to the six, there were three more who have been listed as "undecided" in past surveys: Jack Martins (Nassau County), Mark Grisanti (Buffalo), who hinted recently he may support it with religious protections, and I believe one with the last name Simon (from upstate somewhere).

Fred Dicker (how appropriate to cite him in this thread), columnist for the NY Post, wrote yesterday that as many as seven Republicans were possible votes for same sex marriage. http://www.nypost.com/p/news/local/gop_swings_both_ways_on_gay_marriage_TukBh0X15jkHPNdJZWxQMJ The Dems needed only two additional Republicans, one was for it already. Of the Republicans Dicker said were on the fence, one later announced his support. Thus, only one more vote needed.

For those of you who are unfamiliar with New York, Fred Dicker has the pulse of what is happening in Albany more than any other person in the state.

You're right Razorz, I was thinking of Saland

Roy McDonald has announced his support!!!

http://www.advocate.com/News/Daily_...o_31_Votes_for_Marriage_Equality_in_New_York/

Also Jim Aleis has reported it'll pass with 35 Yes votes, so 6 Republicans. I count Greg Ball as an unofficial Yes given that the bill includes what he said was necessary for him to support it.

Here is the list of undecided GOP senators remaining:

Greg Ball
Kemp Hannon
Charles Fuchillo
Betty Little
Andrew Lanza
Mark Grisanti
Stephan Saland

I also include Jack Martins. He has never indicated his position on the issue even when campaigning.

That is one thing that could still kill this, if they realize it's going to pass, don't want it to, and refuse to bring it up for a vote. Hopefully that is not a possibility.

Woah I don't like this. Just noticed this item in the NY Post article.

Senate Majority Leader Dean Skelos (R-Nassau) a same-sex-marriage opponent, was described as "totally confounded about what to do."
"Dean has his finger in the wind and he's still not certain which way the wind is blowing," said a source with firsthand knowledge of the situation.
Skelos, who says he'll allow a gay-marriage vote only if a majority of Republicans agree to do so, was described as "terrified" that the Conservative Party will oppose GOP senators who back same-sex marriage, potentially costing them control of the Senate.

So if a majority of Republicans (most who would be opposing it) don't want it brought up for a vote he won't do it? wtf?

NOM has been working to inditimate all the Republicians into voting no.
Of course, they claim it's okay for them but if we do it, it's terrorism.

I actually want to thank NOM tonight for posting the phone numbers of the swing Republicans.

Stephen Saland (845) 463-0840
Roy McDonald (518) 274-4616
Andrew Lanza (718) 984-4073
Greg Ball (845) 279-3773
Kemp Hannon (516) 739-1700
Charles Fuschillo (516) 882-0630
Betty Little (518) 743-0968

and Majority Leader Dean Skelos (518) 455-3171

New Yorkers please CALL these numbers on Wed. The Republicans will be meeting in a closed door session to decide the fate of the bill.

I also like how, after they posted these, most of the comments on their blog were people calling to support marriage equality.

The Republicans will lose control of the New York State Senate in 2012, so what are they worrying about? There have been population losses in Republican areas, and growth in Democratic areas.

They would have gone ahead with it if they really felt like it. There are some strong forces trying to prevent a vote in that Republican Conference.

Of course there is, the default Republican position is to fuck us over.

These Republicans are in a position to set an example by being the first ones not to do everything they possibly could to do that. Unfortunately the time may not yet be here when Republicans are capable of this.

Bad development today:

Not necessarily. They could be simply working out specifics regarding who will come forward together (so as not to have any one GOP senator tied to putting it over the edge). One great solution I think would work is to have some on the fence senators abstain from voting. Regardless, I think they realize that if they fuck this up now they'll be creating bigger enemies then anything they could've imagined from the Conservative Party, and they will definitely lose the majority in 2012 as a result.

The Albany office of Senator Dean Skelos (Republican Majority Leader) is still open and taking calls! Please call his office (518-455-3171) to express the absolute importance of the marriage equality bill being sent to the Senate for a vote! Skelos and the GOP must NOT stand in the way of democracy. There job is to facilitate democracy, not block it. 58% of New Yorkers support marriage equality! His office is still taking calls into the night. If you're not from New York, say you're from either Nassau or Suffolk county when they ask what county you're from.

If you're not from New York, say you're from either Nassau or Suffolk county when they ask what county you're from.

This is a dumb idea. They have caller ID and can easily tell who is calling from NY and who isn't and lying about it.

They really only care about what NY voters think, so everyone not in NY please don't clog the phone lines for those that matter.

I'm holding out hope against hope that someone from the Republician party will show some guts and stand up against NOM.

Now David Tyree (ex-NY Giants receiver) is saying that America will "slide toward anarchy" if New York approves gay marriage.

Tyree made a video for NOM, in which he claims gay couples cannot raise children of the opposite sex, and that it is wrong to alter the definition of traditional marriage just "because a minority -- an influential minority -- has ... an agenda."

I'm sitting here waiting for the conference and playing a game. I could swear I saw a news bulletin that the same sex marriage law passed. Any word?

No it just passed in the Assembly and going to the senate. I guess the Assembly is like our House?
But Bloomberg sent to Albany to ask the Republicans to get it to the senate floor where he thinks it will pass. Barely

I'm a First Amendment guy, but sometimes I wish professional athletes would just shut the fuck up.
"Marriage is the only relationship that actually mirrors the relationship with God," he said.

That's funny, I guess we don't pray to the same God. I wonder if Mr. Tyree played football with helmet on? I've always been under the impression that love is the only relationship that mirrors our relationship with God. Anyway, what do I know?
