ALBANY, N.Y. — NY Senators are heading back into the chamber to vote on religious exemptions to gay marriage, the last obstacle before a vote on whether to legalize same-sex unions.

Republicans who have the majority in the Senate had already said they approved the tougher exemptions that protect religious groups from discrimination if they refuse to serve gay couples.

A vote on whether to make New York the sixth state, and by far the largest, where gay marriage is legal, is expected tonight.

As of last count, 31 senators approved of the measure, 29 opposed and two were undecided.

Gov. Andrew Cuomo will sign it into law if the Senate approves the bill. Advocates see it as a turning point in the national gay rights movement.

The marriage bill passed the NY Senate. It will now be the law of the land in NY State once Gov. Cuomo signs the bill.
 
I jumped the gun a little there. It was the religious exemptions that passed. But Senator Saland will vote yes, which brings the number of Republicans that will vote on the marriage bill to at least 32, which will be a pass. Could end up being more than 32 in the yes column when it is all said and done.

Don't feel bad gewhite3, I made the SAME mistake...I thought they had actually passed the Big Bill. But yes they keep saying that Saland will vote yes.

Will this be the most history-making gay rights event in the USA in the past 38 years? (I think that the American Psychiatric Association's move, in 1973, to declassify "gay" as a mental illness, was at least as big...and I think of this as bigger than Massachusetts or anywhere else because: WON'T THIS BE THE FIRST TIME THAT SAME-SEX MARRIAGE HAS BEEN PASSED BY A LEGISLATURE *AND* SIGNED BY A GOVERNOR in the USA?)

Not to mention that NY will be the first truly major state to pass this "without using force" at least - to some people, enough people to float the No on 8 ballot initiative which indeed passed in 2008, the original court decision which allowed such marriage briefly in California was considered to be unfair or bogus.

Am I correct that this is the first Same-Sex Marriage passed in any U. s. state LEGISLATIVELY, or was it passed that way in Vermont? But Vermont is a tiny state which is dissed by a lot of naysayers who say it's too liberal, kooky and irrelevant. Of course I disagree!!

I'm sure if I made any factual errors or wrong memories here, somebody can correct me...easily.

Assembly will pass this. They have to! And hurrah to 33 not 32!
 
I can't see the Assembly NOT passing it.
Reconciliation for the added protections for Non-Profits - aka church and church affiliated organizations should be a breeze.
 
So it's only de facto done - it has to go through the Assembly again. I can certainly live with the religious exemptions. In New York, there will always be some churches that will be more than happy to perform these ceremonies.

Follow the money.

As I asked in another thread, will this be the first time that same-sex MARRIAGE has been passed by a legislature, and signed by a governor? Or is that how it passed in Vermont or Connecticut?

But a lot more people will pay attention to New York than they ever paid to Vermont or Connecticut.

I know I read that the Assembly met and voted earlier tonight.

I didn't get into the details.
