Gay Marriage Updates By State

Good for the court.

I remember when I was going to a "Foursquare Gospel" church back in college, there was some court case where a bunch of church people wanted to get in on it, and were turned down just like this. People were complaining like crazy. A very respected elder asked how many people were praying for the judge and other officials -- there were very few, so he reminded everyone that Paul taught we should pray for officials God has set over us.

Not long after, he was asked to step down as an elder.

Here ends the lesson.

It's good to know that if a referendum is approved, it would not happen until 2012.

But that would also put the law on hold, yes?

And wouldn't that leave a situation like in California, with same-sex marriage being allowed while the petitions were filling up with signatures?

Come to think of it, that might not be a bad thing -- Olson and Boies could switch coasts, and start another suit.....

Yes it would put the law on hold. What I meant was 2012 being a presidential election year would greatly increase voter turnout and thus help our side. Having an extra year will also give us more time to campaign/gain support, and also allow for the demographics to shift in our favor.

I honestly think it was stupid for them to not put off voting for gay marriage in Maine until 2010 for all the above reasons. It especially sucks for the fact that in this year polls have shown dramatic increases in support (on average about twice the usual rate).

I wonder how much difference Dr. Laura's support for DADT repeal has made. I know it's not the same issue, but to many people it's all a package.

They're bullshitting you.

It looks likely to pass committee for the first time, but nobody has any idea how some of the more conservative Democratic Senators will vote. James Brochin in Jockboy's own district is a prime example of this.

I'm glad it can finally pass committee, though, so we can identify the problem Senators and see who's with us and who's against, at the very least.

I'd be shocked if a chamber that has a nearly 3 to 1 Democrat majority can't pass marriage equality if it can make it out of committee and be brought to a vote, which it sounds like it now will.

BTW, I've read sources online saying Bronchin is supportive of gay marriage.

Also, it's a very good sign that Miller is committed to bringing the bill to a vote even though he opposes gay marriage.

In Maryland, the Senate President and the Speaker of the House are both opposed to bringing a marriage equality bill to the floor. Someone is going to have to rail on them hard to change their minds. I also seriously doubt any poll that shows just a bare majority of Marylanders supporting marriage equality means that a marriage equality bill could survive referendum. Such was the case in both California and Maine. Sadly, our opponents' fear tactics work.

My home country, Canada is screwed up in many ways. But it's kinda sad that Canada allows gay marriage while our neighbor to the south is still fighting over it.

Don't mean to sound rude with this, but it's true... This thread just makes me more proud to be a Canadian.

That would be nice to see. I've made a habit of signing petitions for things I don't really like, but think the voters should have a chance to decide on; it would be good to have politicians think that way.

As you should be. I'm not Canadian but I appreciate and admire the progress that Canada has made, not only with gay rights but also health care.

The US Government is an embarrassment, a disappointment, irresponsible, irrational and we can thank the fact that so many US Americans are so ignorant, hateful, and grab on to dishonest spin. Any attempt to minimize spin gets squashed because those in power have found it to be so effective to them keeping power and getting what they want (corruption).

Uh, please explain to me how that "redstate.com" article (fucking lol) does anything to support the notion that Brochin would support marriage equality.

I'm glad Miller is finally letting it get to a vote, but we have a lot of conservative Democrats here who might join the filibuster. *puke*

Still an obviously biased source but sheds some more light. In 2008 he expressed support for civil unions, saying they were (at the time) the only "political reality" to give gay couples the same rights as straight couples. To me this implies that he supports gay marriage, but didn't see it as being a winnable issue in the state at the time.

Also, Miller is not only supportive of bringing it to a vote, but also supportive of working to end the fillibuster.
