Gay Marriage Updates By State

Just got an email from Kathy Szeliga, delegate. She believes marriage is between a man and a woman, and urges me to be ready to help gather signatures because she expects this to pass.

Well at least it's a good sign that she thinks she will lose.

Pissed? That was darned polite for being pissed!

I'd have been calling on her to repent, seek God, turn away from the works of the flesh, and recognize that there is church marriage and "Caesar"-marriage, and Jesus said our power is not of this world, so stop breaking your oath to uphold the Constitution He has ordained for this country -- and vote for equality, which is the loving thing, and God is a God of love, not of law... and those who follow law walk toward death.

I live for the day Diaz is booted out of NY State..he truly can put any Republician wingnut to shame.

Firsthand experience usually does the trick. It's amazing how prejudices just melt away, in that way.
Not necessarily. I know someone in California who has friends and even family members who voted for Prop 8, even though he's married to his partner and they've been together 30 years.

You can't fix stupid unfortunately

By the way...

This will not be like California or Maine.

Maryland's equality law goes to the ballot in 2012, a nasty and bloody 18 months of screaming, hate, broken friendships and bonds between family.

That's good for 2 reasons:

-it gives our side more time to campaign

-the vote will be on an election year, thus upping our chances of being successful at the ballot (I say time and time again, that factor killed us in Maine)

^^^Not to mention more time for the demographics to shift in our favor.

Plus, you can only hear a lie so long before people realize it's BS. Look at how quickly support for gay marriage shot up in California post Prop 8 when our side actually stepped up and told our stories (Andrew Pugno not getting elected to the state assembly in the worst year for Democrats since 1920 and in a Republican leaning district, and Kamala Harris getting elected to the Attorney General's office).

About Maine: Post Question 1 I called the office of the Senator who sponsored the marriage equality legislation and told him exactly what I thought. His assistent completely circled around the question without even answering it. Guess it shows I was right!

^^^I believe it was the PPP poll from California which showed support had increased 6% from 2009-2010.

^^^That almost made up for the bad news in Maryland today! Hopefully he'll get kickout out soon and a pro-equality Democrat can take his seat in time for a vote.

I still find it unbelievable that a relatively progressive state like Minnesota still hasn't recognized gay marriage! I would love to be able to move back to my home state with my husband, but it doesn't look like that will happen for a long time yet... Anyone have any status updates for Minnesota, by any chance?

Not shocked by the news in Maryland. When it comes to our rights, politicions don't show spines for the most part.

Minnesota was very progressive up until the 2000's. We are now actually fighting a constitutional amendment to ban gay marriage. It won't come up this year because out legislature is innundated with bugetary issues, but still.

For me, that's so hard to believe! Of course, I never would have thought Minnesota would ever elect the likes of Michele Bachmann to ANY official position at all... I can tell it's been a while since I've been home!

It hink it's a mix of apathy and giving up...still a disgrace more didn't show up.

Oh, btw, nice job Lady Gaga. Way to ignore Maryland while sending your fans on some wild goose chase after some Rethug Senator in New York who isn't going to do shit to help us.

We'll see. It's something that he previously said he was opposed to gay marriage and he's now meeting with advocates. He represents a very Democratic area and likely will be a one termer as well.
