Gay Men, Comic Books, and Geeking Out

oh how I love a thread like this!
I would considered myself extremely geeky. I went to the San Diego comic-con for the past 15 years of my life! I even went to the Joe Kubert school of cartoon graphic arts, you know that school you see sometimes when you flip through some comics? Yup I went there, it was good times.
I think my favorite current series is Fables. The 100th issue was epic, though I will miss the witch of the black forrest. I think Frau Totenkinder was one of my favorite characters in the series, that and Boy Blue, both gone now :( oh well.
gay geeks unite!

CaptainMellow, I would enjoy a weekly geek update, what with me being scatterbrained it would help immensely to know what each week holds ahead. That way I can make sure to catch what I can when its on or whatnot.

GL, which comics did you pick up? I hope brightest day is included. As I'm majorly curious as to whats happening. I don't have a comic shop anywhere near me so I can't get it.

it IS fun to geekify a boyfriend. In 3 + years, I've turned my "shoot your tv" boyfriend (he was never a TV watcher) into a fan of many sci-fi fanboy fave shows who even enjoys cartons like Young Justice, Avengers, and JLU.

He keeps screaming to watch Walking Dead... but we don't have cable ATM and i can't find it viewable online anywhere...

H&H, try this site if your bf wants to watch Walking Dead online. Most of the links provided for each of the episodes work pretty well, especially Wisevid, Zshare, and VidBux. I've been indulging my inner couch potato on this site for the past week.

Ok gang here is my 2nd installment of "THE WEEK IN GEEK", I have included a new book section for prose genre and a convention & festival section, hope you find it useful.

TV (all times EST):
Monday 01/10-
"Star Trek: TNG: double Feature, The worst film "Nemesis", followed by the best one "First Contact", SyFy, 6:30 PM (A Star Trek:TOS double feature happens Thursday)
"X-Men: The Last Stand", FX, 8:00 PM, It's not as good a movie as the first 2 imho, but it has it's moments.
"Clash of the Gods", Series Premiere, The origins and historical context of ancient myths are explored. In the series opener, Zeus' epic struggle against his father, Cronus. History International Channel, 8:00 PM
"The Cape" 2 hour series premiere repeats, NBC, 9:00 PM

Tuesday 01/11-
Something incredibly cool, A marathon of the 60's TV series "The Green Hornet" (every episode) starring Van Williams and the legendary Bruce Lee as Kato. SyFy channel, 10:00 AM to 11:00 PM, TiVo this!
"No Ordinary Family", ABC, 8:00 PM. Forgot to mention this last week, I kinda gave up on the show myself after the first 3 episodes, I found it slow moving but if somebody here recommends it, I'll give it another shot.
"V", new episode, ABC, 9:00 PM
"Iron Man", FX, 9:00 PM. Yeah, we've all seen it already, but it's just so good.
"Tosh.0", Season Premiere, Comedy Central, 10:00 PM. I'm more partial to G4's "Web Soup" myself if only because I think Chris (porn name) Hardwick is cuter than Daniel Tosh...not that I'd kick D.T. out of bed mind you.
"Onion SportsDome", Series Premiere, Comedy Central, 10:30 PM. For those (like me) who love the surreal absurdist comedy of "The Onion", then this spoof of Sportscenter and other sports-news shows look very very promising, just one example from tonight's show, a play by play of a fight between a meth addict and imaginary snakes.

Wednesday 01/12-
"Human Target" back to back new episodes, FOX, 8:00 pm
"The Rocky Horror Picture Show", Extended cut version of the cult classic, Fox Movie Channel, 8:00 PM (and for those who can stomach it, David Cronenberg's "Naked Lunch" immediately follows.)
"Mythbusters", new episode, Discovery Channel, 9:00 PM
"Naruto:Shippuden", new episode, DisneyXD, 9:00 PM

Thursday 01/13-
nothing of note on any of the networks tonight, all genre shows are still in repeats. Some new UFO/Alien programming on cable for those who like those type of shows, and back to back episodes of "Brad Meltzer's Decoded" on The History Channel starting at 9:00 PM. But the pick of the night for me is "Enter The Dragon", Bruce Lee's best (and last fully completed) film. Even if your not a martial arts film geek this is a must see. AMC, 8:00 PM

Friday 01/14-
"Attack of the Show", G4, 7:00 PM
"Young Justice" part 2 of the pilot episode, Cartoon Network, 7:00 PM
"Wolverine and the X-Men", re-airing of the series starting from the beginning with back to back episodes, NickToons, 8:00 PM
"Medium", new episode, CBS, 8:00 PM
"The Day The Earth Stood Still", The 50's Classic, not the Keanu Reeves remake, Klaatu Barada Nikto ya'll, AMC, 8:00 PM (re-airs at 10:00 PM)
"Star Wars: The Clone Wars", new episode, Cartoon Network, 8:30 PM
"Hulk", The Ang Lee film of the Marvel Anti-Hero, TNT, 9:00 PM (the scene with the gamma dogs was great, but that was about it as far as I'm concerned)
"Merlin" new episode, SyFy, 10:00 PM
"The Soup", new episode, E, 10:00 PM

Saturday 01/15-
"Behemoth" The newest of the guilty pleasure schlocky monster movies from the folks at SyFy, 9:00 PM
"Primeval", new episode, BBC America, 9:00 PM
"Saturday Night Live" new episode, Gwyneth Paltrow hosts; Cee Lo Green performs (lets cross our fingers for an uncensored "Fuck You"), NBC, 11:30 PM

Sunday 01/16-
"The Avengers" new episode, DisneyXD, 10:00 AM
New episodes of "American Dad", "The Simpsons" (gay episode alert, Smithers turns Moe's pub into a gay bar), "Bob's Burgers", "Family Guy" & "The Cleveland Show", FOX, 7:30 PM
The Golden Globe Awards, NBC, 8:00 PM (Red carpet stuff starts @ 7:00 PM)
"Children's Hospital", season premiere, Cartoon Network/Adult Swim, 11:30 PM, and if your not watching this brilliant, hysterical show...get with it.
"Robot Chicken" new episode, Cartoon Network/Adult Swim, 11:45 PM

VIDEO GAMES:
Tuesday 01/11-
"DC Universe Online" for PC & PS3

new releases Wednesday 01/12

BOOKS: The kind without pictures (Yeah I know...crazy right!?)
Tuesday 01/11-
"The Inner Circle" by Brad Meltzer
"Zombie Spaceship Wasteland" by Patton Oswalt (technically came out last Tuesday but P.A. is not only a great comedian but a comic & video game geek too so I was remiss not to mention it.)

theFallenGod, those are awesome! The Jean Grey and Iceman there are my favorite.

Capt. Mellow, I'm starting to like this "The Week in Geek" you've got going on. But when did Naruto Shippuden start? Ahh! I've probably missed like a bunch of episodes!

Glad you like it SK, though I haven't got much feedback about it except from you and maybe 1 or 2 others, so I don't know if I'll continue it. It takes a good couple of hours to compile the information and I may be wasting my time.

To clarify about Naruto: Shippuden. When I post that a new episode is up, what I mean is that this is the first time the english dubbing of an episode is airing on an American media outlet. The episode that will air this Wednesday would have already been seen by the diehard American N:S fans via the internet after it originally aired in Japan and then was quickly subtitled quite a while ago. If your one of those diehards who doesn't wait for the english language dubbing, you may have already seen these episodes. I actually could & should have posted that a new episode of Bleach will premiere Saturday night at midnight (EST) with exactly the same meaning.

As for missing episodes, DisneyXD does a very good job of not only repeating past episodes but even running blocks of episodes and even the occasional marathon at any given day & time, you should check your TV listings for when they do that.

Aww, it's pretty useful to me, but yeah, I see what ya mean. It has reminded me of "The Cape" and "Clash of the Titans" so it's pretty useful. Pretty sure others have taken a look at it.

As for Naruto and Bleach. I've tried watching subbed videos, but got annoyed with having to read the subtitles lol. Lately I've just been waiting for the dubs to air, so that means I've missed the first 9 episodes of the third Shippuden season. I also have to catch up on Bleach.

I actually enjoy watching Anime in the original Japanese, particularly Bleach. The new dubbed episodes airing on Cartoon Network every Saturday at midnight are just finishing up the "Captain Amagai" arc, but because of near instantaneous subtitling of episodes that air in Japan and turn up on the internet I am totally caught up on the show up to last weeks newest episode. Hulu is an excellent destination to watch subtitled anime including Bleach and Naruto, I am catching up on the final episodes of "Inuyasha: The Final Act" there.

Glad you brought up "The Cape" (which is re-airing on NBC as I type this), I saw it last night and thought it was fantastic. It's not without it's flaws of course, some of the acting was hammy (especially the villains), I thought the progression of Faraday from cop to caped vigilante was a bit too condensed, and some of the Batman rip offs were blatantly obvious (DC could sue for the Orwell/Oracle similarities). But for me the pluses far outweighed the negatives; a nice clean, easy to understand storyline ("Heroes" by the end was ridiculously cluttered by meandering storylines and confusing plot threads), a charismatic lead actor (and nice to look at too), good snappy dialogue (Max had great lines), and I love the Carny elements. It was also beautifully filmed and had some excellent special effects. In short it was a fun 2 hours and I think the show has great promise.

i'm sorry that you don't have a shop nearby. i've been there myself and it can be rough when you've got a collection to feed. there are a bunch of on-line retailers that can help you out.

i have been following brightest day from the get go and for the most part its been pretty solid. i know dc has begun to put the first issues into a book format but i don't know if its a trade or a hardback. probably a hardback.

So I never actually got to watch "The Cape" but I did, however, manage to record it. And from your blurb/take on it, it doesn't sound half bad. Though I can't wait to see this Orwell character, so I'll probably start watching that later!

geeking out that the new V series has original lizard chick Jane Badler as Queen Mum Diana.

Yeah that was an interesting episode.

CaptainMellow, I also appreciate the this week is geek. It allows me to plan ahead and remember when stuff is on that I'd otherwise forget about.

speaking of v - check out this side by side video comparison between Last night's rat eating by Anna to the original rat chowing by Diana back in the day. DAMN FUNNY how much better FX are nowadays. I'd post both here - but new clip isn't youtube so can't embed it here.

I'm really liking the 2nd season thus far. I'm trying to be careful not to miss any because they are NOT available at hulu or ABC (even tho the shows on before AND after it ARE) this season due to issues with "streaming rights." Makes me think someone at ABC wants to kill the show. I imagine a LARGE percentage of a show's audience doesn't watch it when it airs anyone. If that audience doesn't get to watch, show dies, right?

Question for those of you who have ondemand etc... is V available via those services? or is it just on at airtime? Am i paranoid? or is withholding streaming a good way to kill an already rocky (canceled and rescued last season) show.

That scene with Anna creeped me the hell out. Her eating that rat and everything almost me sick, and that's not all that easy to do to me.

maybe i was desensitized because as a fan of the original miniserieses and TV show, i knew some rat eatin' was inevitable - but I just found it damn cool! Now her chewing up and then regurgitating the pureed rat for the baby... that creeped me the hell out.

Back in the 80s that rat eating scene with Diana was all anyone could talk about. But back then we didn't realize JUST how sucky the FX were. Did you check out the 80s clip?

I expected more comments on this one. Laughed my ass off when i saw that old clip of a PA's arm jamming a rat into a rubber muppet Diana face.

strivin' to be THE nsfw gay geek blog... so say hello fellas? Tell me what u want to see discussed? Dunno what else to to to encourage comments?

workin on some celeb galleries... either Vampire Diaries or True Blood studs... any preferences?

Heroesnhunks, yeah I checked out the 80's clip, and i see what you mean. Who knew special effects could change so much? As for your other question, I haven't seen much of either vamp show. But from what I do know, there are my guys I like in Diaries. I'll try to check out your site soon.

On tonight's Smallville which was a repeat I'm guessing, I kinda thought that the older Clark was actually a cameo of Brandon Routh... I mean when I saw the scene they had an uncanny resemblance.

I'm thinking I'll have to feature Ian Somerhalder 1st... loved him since he played gay college boy Paul in Rules of Attraction.

Any interest I might have fostered in trying to decipher LOST was killed along with his character. Watching him as bad boy vamp in Vampire Diaries is pure candy.

Who else got ripped off buying "I am an Avenger" #5 of 5 just because of the Alan Davis Young Avengers story that ended up being ONLY 3 FRAKING PAGES!!!! - sorry been watching the 5 unaaired Caprica episodes. Doomed to love canceled or about-to-be-cancelled sci-fi.

anyway i posted a 3 page (+ cover) "preview" of the issue, its only a 3 page preview, so it doesnt give away much about the other 2 stories - which by the way DID NOT impress. I spent 3.99 on a 3 page story. AARGH!!!. Evil fuckers.

I can't say I'm as harcore as to get tattoos all over me to express my inner geek, but I felt I should put it on my cell.

When I bought my new phone in the Summer last year (HTC Legend), I was compelled to make it my own, the pictures are my result. :D

Edit: I should note that the picture on the screen has now been replaced with one that continues the image of the sticker exactly.
