Halloween is one of those stupid inventions from the USA which aims to part stupid people from their money.

It totally sucks.

Any thoughts?

I purposely went out directly after work to avoid trick or treaters - we didn't turn any of the lights on in the brief time we were dropping our bags off in the house either!

I'm not a great fan, and your american tradition of trick or treat has become popular here in the UK.

But this evening, I had many visits from young children to my door, and each got some sweets, bring them instant happiness, and probably a store of denture problems to come.

Answering the door was troublesome, especially when making supper, but thank goodness its once a year. Same for Xmas and the carolers.

How absurd to have an European slur we Americans with inventing Halloween. It is an ancient Druid custom from the UK.
I happen to think it is OK. Selwyn is its Welsh name, and I enjoyed the children who had fun and came to my door.
Shep+

I don't care where it came from, I love it!!!! I just spent the last three hours passing out candy and had a great time. I just wish there were more kids. Two years ago we had so many kids that I went through $100 in candy in an hour. So many people ran out that year, the many people stopped coming to our neighborhood. We probably only had about a third of the people the last two years compared to that year. I sure wish they would come back. I love seeing all the kids dressed up in their costumes.

I have always loved halloween, it just brings back good memories of when i was a kid, its just the whole atmosphere of halloween, the scary movies, the costumes, free candy! whats not to love?

If one drop of semen has more life in it than one drop of blood, then why didn't Dracula suck dick instead???

Happy Halloween!

Hate it. Just because it's so damned DEPRESSING.

At home, in the UP, the town I live in is dying a slow, depressing, agonizing death. Our house is 100+ years old and all of our neighbors, more or less, are in their 'senior' years (I am trying to be polite) and there are no kids within blocks, even though I am 4 doors up from the only middle school in town. When my partner graduated from High School in that town he had 265 classmates; last year the High School graduated a total of 62 count em 62 kids.

Here in Colorado, the neighborhood Grandma's house is in is experiencing a resurgence. The neighborhood is roughly 50 years old and went through a series of changes, the last being the original owners dying off and rental properties. So all that was here were old fogies (no kids) and single folks (no kids). Within the last two years, though, with the market changing, instead of rentals they have become 'starter' homes, and I can count 5 families on this block with kids under age 2. Last year I had 3 Trick or Treaters; this year I bailed out and ignored it. But within a few years, I do think it will come back.

Hallowe'en in a high holiday for me.. so it can be a blast if done right.

It can also suck.

Tonight I went to West Hollywood and was treated to clueless straight losers being twats, lots of drunk drag queens being losers, lots of Asian tourists not in costume taking pictures and pointing and laughing at everyone and a few hot guys who looked like they were kinda over it.

Then we went to the Faultline and there were lots of hot guys having fun.

Once I got home I had a little ritual on my own and I'll go to bed in a bit...

I think it's a blast but yes.. it's been a bit over-commercialized.

Do you guys take a holiday (as in get a day off) for Hallowe'en? If not, why call it a holiday?

I'm not sure I understand all the fuss - I know some guys across the pond who have been building up to it for weeks and weeks, which seems a little silly to me - and we definitely don't do much about it here in .za, apart from the local satellite channels having fright night horror movies all week.

There are always a few kids who try the trick or treat thing but since the bulk of us saffers don't really give a toss about it, they don't get very far. Certainly none have ever banged on my door in suburbia, that's for sure.

It's the same with Valentine's Day - our buildup lasts about two days and then it's all over. The only thing we really get amped for is Christmas down here, and Easter to a large but lesser extent.

How can any of us hate Halloween? Hasn't it been called the Gay Christmas?

Personally, I like it. I had to work tonight and it was so much fun seeing all the drunk, straight boys dressed as Rambo, Axl Rose, soldiers, gladiators, etc.. One was Borat in that swim wear, the nut sack sling or whatever. A lot of fun.

I'm curious when did it become popular in UK? What do you attribute the rise in popularity to considering it has been going strong in the US since the 1930s?

Thanks for handing off the holiday to us and then calling it stupid because we enjoy it.

*ahem*

I like halloween - just got back from trick or treating with my cousin and got to catch up with an old neighborhood friend, and me and her took a trip down memory lane while watching the new generation walk through our old stomping grounds. There are alot more kids around here than i thought, and it made me miss those yesteryears when we got to explore the neighborhood for the first time...

Sucks that people could actually HATE that, but whatever. I dressed up for the occassion, and i'm going to take my photo now.

JyStar - love your attitude on this...Where I go we make a little party out of it. A few neighbors set up a table out front, everyone puts their goodies on it and the kids come up and load up. We sit around drinking booze and smoking cigars! Excellent night for all!

It is so much fun if you are with really fun people who get into it. I graduate this year so this was probably my last university halloween (I am probably going to grad school but I don't think it will be the same). University students are so into halloween and the bars are packed of awesome costumes and drunk people. So much fun.

I enjoyed Halloween when I was a kid, but now it's just another day. I do enjoy the horror movie marathons.
