HBO's new show "Looking" starring Jonathan Groff

The only gay themed TV I've seen was the Brothers & Sisters story arc. Looks decent!

It has a 78 on Metacritic so far, which is very positive. Based on the previews and what I expect based on Weekend, it will be something more true to everyday life than a typical drama or gay drama, with subtle character development, more universally human than being strictly about gayness. I guess what appealed to me about Weekend is that, as a gay film, it wasn't alienating gay or straight people, which I think is rare. I thought it was refreshing and hope this show does something similar.

^A 78 is mediocre in most peoples' books. As I said, the show has potential but it's difficult to judge on a few clips.

It usually takes several episodes for characters to develop for a series to be good. I'm hoping this show will be good and will last. There needs to be more gay shows on TV and not just shows with some gay characters. And well written shows at that.

The review talks of the shows mediocrity, and tha vapid ness of the hook up culture and aging in the gay world. All things I was expecting based on the previews. It airs here tonight. I'll give it a go, but that review makes it sounds Generic and plastic. Has anyone on here actually seen the first episode yet?

Ten minutes in and I almost wrote it off but it picked up. It's actually not bad. Give it a chance.

Haven't seen it yet and even the gawker reviewer says things pick up later in the season. It's trying not to be a clichéd, over the top look at gays as stereotypes... actually trying to show gay men as they more realistically are. Yet even great shows can't go far on realistic depictions because a lot of real life is mundane....the characters are nice enough but why would you invest your time in them? Not easy striking the right balance but a noble attempt I hope succeeds.

For the past two months or so I've really hated this show, but I know being that it hadn't aired yet that I was being a little brat which I was and that usually trailers and promos aren't really good tools to judge due to bad editing.

I now realize that it wasn't the promo that were edited bad, it's just the show is horrible like I already figured it would be.

Not diverse, the acting isn't all that great, the characters don't make any sense and it's too fairytale like. The main character acts like a damn woman.

And I love how all the actors are from England and Australia and it's being taped in the United States.

You guys enjoy this shit. It's just Queer as Folk 2.0

I really don't see this show lasting. TBH.

It was....ok. Kinda boring, but it was a pilot and I try not to base all my opinions off of a pilot. I can see it picking up a bit, but I think a disservice has been done to it with everyone comparing it to a gay version of "Girls". It most definitely is not that. And something about Jonathan Groff isn't sitting well with me. His character was blah.

How is it not diverse? And seriously, you'r complaining that ONE actor is from England and ONE actor is from Australia? Half of the Walking Dead cast is British, does that make it any less of a show?

No, but the terrible writing certainly does.

As for Looking, who here is honestly not going to watch? Despite the bland pilot it's already better than half the crud that passes for TV.

Ok, first of all when you judge or even read a review before seeing a movie, listening a song or reading a book, you lose time. Get to see it first, then read the reviews, people.

For a pilot, it was ok. Finally a gay themed series that didn´t make me cringe, everything was nicely written, they didn´t fill the episode with asses and muscles and definitely didn´t make soft porn and claim to be a serious series. Early to say, but I think I´ll watch this one.

Funny-- was just re-watching Queer As Folk over Christmas - amazing that the show is 14 years old already (US version.)
Also amazing how much soft-core gay sex they showed, which, at some level, was the reason to watch it.
The casting was also great-- Gale Harold and Randy Harrison sold those characters and made you believe what was at some level a fairly far-fetched story (20 year old ad exec falls head over heels in love with 17 year old high school senior.)

I was underwhelmed.

For me, a QAF retread. The guys fall into two predictable categories: either happy sluts or whining about wanting to get laid. How original! Original would have been setting the show in Des Moines, Iowa, not SF.

I thought it was ok and I'll keep watching for now. Parts were predictable and I'm hoping the couple gets more screentime. It certainly makes hooking up seem effortless and free of consequences, though accurate in being easier than dating.

The 3b tattoo scene was sexy.

I thought the show was pretty good. It takes awhile for characters to develop. So I think this show could really be a great show over time. You can't always go by reviews. That is only a person's opinion. I have read reviews for movies that were good or bad reviews and I thought the opposite of the critic.

Pilots are not a good judge of quality unless it is atrociously bad which this wasn't.

I at least give a series 3-episodes before casting it off. This does have potential but right now, I dunno.

Watched it last night. Groff aside, the casting really sucked. The other characters all seemed pretty interchangeable and at times I wasn't sure who was who or their main distinguishing characteristic was something physical (the guy with the mustache) rather than something about their personality. That's not a problem you ever have with great sitcoms when the actors own the roles. And even not-so-great sitcoms can be made good by a breakout star (e.g. Robin Williams in Mork and Mindy) Did not see that in Looking.
