It's not just the stores .. it's the customers as well.  If no one was interested in purchasing Christmas merchandise now, then the store wouldn't be putting it out.  I remember a few years ago we had singing santa clauses .. they put a display by the front door on August 31 and by the end of the day they had all sold out.  I believe they were $70.  Since then they've waited a little longer to bring out the Christmas decorations, but pretty much there are two parts to it .. first off, the customer demand; second off, if you walk into one store and there are no decorations, but walk into a competitor's store and see decorations, where will you buy them?  Some people like being prepared in advance, or to get it out of the way, and the first place they see them is likely the first place that they'll buy them; hence the rush to have holiday/seasonal merchandise out ASAP.
