How many languages can you speak

....like I said there is no difference if it is English or any other language but English is already the most useful language in the world so might as well stick with that.

Duck sweetie, the Chinese are coming......

OMG. My PC almost got blue screen from this nonsense.

BTW, I'm amazed you guys actually talked to this dimwit for so long. "Universal language," my ass. If we could really get that many people to talk the same tongue, one of the first things they'd agree on is shipping his ass to a new solar system. He could just call it "gay majority gym," because his gay ass would be the only one there.

Again, only the future will show your stupidity.
Even the present..English is already the leading language in international discourse, the "lingua franca" of the modern era....
If we were living in the times before English was so important you would have been laughing at predictions of what it would become.
I mean what else is there to say really....all you idiots do is write insults and your opinions without anything to back them up.
Stupidity at it's finest.
](*,)](*,)
I would have laughed at your little jokes except they were retarded too...why would I call a solar system a gym....I get you wanted to make a joke about my thread about my gay majority gym but you can't just use it for anything it has to make sense for it to actually be funny.

Um............. awkward

Anyways, my two cents: I read somewhere/heard multiple times that there's a huge movement for the learning of Mandarin Chinese, since in the next 50 years or something, it will be the dominant language even more so than English...

And haven't you seen Firefly?

ahem.... anyways,

I can speak three languages fluently. English, Mandarin, Spanish. Yay.

I can read/write, biblical Hebrew and Greek. Completely useless, well.... not according to my religious parents.

That's impressive.
Now think of all the time it took you to learn those languages, you could have learned a ton of information about something useful as science and medicine...maybe even came up with a cure for AIDS.
I bet these idiots would be happy about that.
But no these people will tell you that you need to learn other languages...even though everybody in the world is learning English....so no actually you don't...by learning other languages you are just slowing down the progress of a universal language and making languages that are slowly dying out die slower.

Ah..damn my superior intelligence.

If Mandarin Chinese becomes more dominant than English I will happily learn it. I don't think it will though.

Bro, I grew up in America, my parents are Chinese and I had to take Spanish in high school/live right next to Mexico. I didn't spend any excess time learning these languages. :)

They're saying since the Chinese population is increasing at an exponential rate significantly higher than any other race, AND the fact that China is evolving into a leading capitalist economically driven country-state, that Chinese in the next 50 years will be THE most important language in the business world. And business and commerce is what made English so ubiquitous in the first place.

But I do agree that learning the Biblical languages was indeed a waste of time. But then again, I didn't have a choice did I? :p

The notion that Mandarin will be the dominant language in the next half century because of business is doubtful. Firstly, there are many arenas that languages operate in, and business is only one. Let's look to politics, sciences, philosophy, arts & culture, cuisine, literature, medicine & pharmacology. Just the other day, I had a discussion with a poli, a med. doctor and a retired pharmacist. The doc mentioned he was learning German (he's French and also has a Phd in English Lit.) and when asked why, he observed that German is the langue du jour for philosophy (for grammatical and other structural reasons). Then, two days later, another friend echoed this idea and said he's sending a nephew to Germany (from another Euro country) to improve his German before he begins at uni. to study Philosophy. If you want to discuss any Western ideas, I think it is incredibly important to be able to discuss and read in the relevant language fairly well, or miss out on vast amounts of information. Thoughts are to a large degree moulded by lingual experience and expressions, which have been moulded by cultural and topographical/geographical experiences. CHinese thoughts and Western thoughts, or for that matter any non-Chinese thoughts, are inherently different. Yes, more so than the differences between Euro languages because of grammar (or lack of) forcing a different stress into our expressions. And don't anybody start reading more into this than I imply or state: Anyone who speaks several languages understands the re-routing and para-phrasing that goes on in any cross-lingual interpretation.

Mandarin cannot replace English or any Euro language. Also, consider that if China wants to operate with the rest of the world in a money market, it will want to do so as quickly and readily as possible. The rest of the world will simply never invest time and resources for learning to write, or for that matter intone adequately to communicate fluently with the Chinese. The Chinese would be playing alone.

I only learn other languages so that I cuss others without them knowing.

And further to my response to the sophistical notion that Mandarin is destined to replace English as the international language over the next 50 years arguing on the basis of population growth: This is illogical; if lingual dominance were based solely on population numbers using a given language, English would have been dropped long ago, since China has been doing big business with the US and Europe for some time now.

That's all.

English,Russian,Latvian and i knew German (Only know few words now) oh and slowly working on Japanese language :D

lol, I wasn't saying that English would drop out, I was just highlighting the increasing significance of Chinese in the future, to counteract OP's nativist, anti-cultural, idealogical homogenization of the English as the global standard. :)

Darling, English is the global standard.

You can blame the ones who tried to build the tower of Babel in Ancient Babylon- in order to literally reach the Heaven. Before the destruction of the tower, all the known world in that time had only one language.

Do you actually believe that's how different languages came into existance?
How sad.

I'm also trying to learn a little bird, guitar, and dog, already fluent in cat, Bach and piano.

"Lingua Franca" means, roughly, "Language of the French," but we say it to mean "the obvious language that everybody speaks."

Anyone who is counting on English being the obvious language of the future should remember the original meaning of "Lingua Franca" before they open their big yaps about other languages being irrelevant.

時々僕は少し日本語を話せる。でも、あまり上手じゃないと思っています。 :3

Sometimes I speak a little Japanese. But I don't think I do it very well.
