Hypnagogic Hallucinations (sleep paralysis, etc)

There are some very useful posts in there for understanding how we sleep, how and why we dream, and such. I'd oppose merging, though.

Thanks, I've been reading some of the posts. Interesting theories for sure.

Got it when I was under stress for extended periods.
Haven't had it in years now. Sleep paralysis is the original nightmare =-O

Is the failure of that mechanism the thing that leads to sleep walking?

I used to try to climb the walls in my sleep when a child.

And my dog trots in her sleep, with paws moving in cantor.

Kien probably remembers reading this article from Livescience

During the most dream-filled phase of sleep, our muscles become paralyzed, preventing the body from acting out what's going on in the brain. Now, researchers have discovered the brain chemicals that keep the body still in sleep.

Brain Chemicals That Cause Sleep Paralysis Discovered

Apparently, failure of one of the two neurotransmitter modes of action could cause sleepwalking.

Well sorry if it bothers you, Pat. I didn't know. The mods can merge the threads if they want to I guess.

It doesn't bother me personally because I just have regular dreams not these special dreams. But I mentioned the other thread because someone in that other thread might actually have found THE CURE for this medical phenomenon.

^^I know the temporary "cure" for me is to not be stressed or sleep deprived. I noticed they also tend to happen if I'm trying to take a nap during the day and therefore disrupting my usual sleep cycle.

And some people get them if they don't nap during the day.

Mine have had some correlation with stress, but there are blatant contradictions to that. I don't think I've ever been able to see a solid pattern.

I agree. I feel half-dead for half an an hour afterwards if I have a nap during the day.

Most doctors I've heard say we should try and keep as regular as possible in our sleep-patterns.

Some people experience it if they takes naps and some experience it if they don't take naps.

So do we ban naps or encourage naps?

You have to know your personal nap length. If I sleep between twenty and forty minutes, I'm fine -- more than that and I start getting grouchy and groggy.
 But you can't regulate the length of how long you sleep. The body sleeps for as long as it wants to.

I find that it tends to happen to me during the naps. It's like my body is telling me "no it's time for you to sleep right now" even though I would be physically tired. And I would be tired but not sleepy, if that makes sense. I would try to fall asleep but it would be difficult to do so and it's like my brain is stuck in limbo between the land of the wake and the land of the sleep. Trapped in no-man's-land. Sometimes I wish my brain were wired differently.

It's a sleep mechanism. When you go to sleep, your body is in temporary paralysis to prevent you from "acting out your dreams." In sleep paralysis, you wake up, but your body is still in that paralyzed state. Many people see the devil when they experience sleep paralysis. But it's really them not coming out of their dream state even though they're waking up.

Or ya know, maybe it's the devil.

At least that's what I've learned hehehe

I've heard about that too. Thankfully I haven't done any sleepwalking (that I'm aware of). *knocks on wood*

Oh I hate sleep paralysis, but luckily it hasn't happened to me in months. It's like your mind wakes up but your body is still asleep, and you try to do everything you can to wake it up... trying to move, trying to make a noise... last time it happened, I just relaxed and I woke up like normal.

I've had sleep paralysis happen years ago in the past, scary as hell at the time. Hopefully if it ever happens again I'll be able to catch it & make use of that partially asleep/awake state.

Sometimes when I'm really tired before falling asleep I'll get this thing where I can 'see' (if my eyes are closed ofcourse) colored patterns/shapes, sometimes its even kinda dream-like <probably some term for this, but I don't know what it is>

I've also had Lucid dreams before...pure awesomeness there...but i don't get enough sleep for that anymore

Even better if you can take "control" of it...

^
Yep. I've had Lucid ones where I can take control :) I love the feeling it gives
Have even had non-lucid dreams where I have some bits of control
