  • Hi Guest - Did you know?

I got a new hip

That's a good question. I'm finding that the 'imbalance' between my hips really requires my lower back to compensate. If I'm not careful, that results in near-debilitating pain.

That's new for you, yes?

I'm trying to think; did your hips have a relatively rapid decline? If they have been bothering you for years I don't think you complained about it much on here anyway.

Hopefully with the other one squared away and some symmetrical healing and load-bearing, the back will be less of an issue.

It was a slow process at first, and I didn't complain much because of my cross-country running background; coach told us "Pain is your friend". I didn't even mention it until people started noticing the way my left hip would sometimes just give way.

But starting last year it came on hard. I suspect that was when the cartilage was all gone, so every step was bone-on-bone, and the brittleness my bones have always had led to the top of the femur starting to disintegrate.

The back pain is pretty much new, yes. The reason is that even with the lift for my right foot, things aren't balanced: the distance from knee to hip is shorter on the right, and the lift makes it so the distance from the sole of my foot to my knee is longer on the right. So even if I walk carefully, the two legs just can't function as a matched set at this point.

I'm seriously looking forward to getting the other hip fixed, too. The replacement now functions better than that hip has for at least five years! Hopefully getting it fixed will relieve the stress on my left knee, a joint I've injured several times in wrestling, a couple of times bicycling (touring, and mountain), at least once skiing, once rock climbing... and I'm not sure if that's the whole list. But if I have to get the knee replaced, too, it's nice to know that knee technology has come a long way in the last five years.

Same here -- qualifying on the crutches was the last step to get to go home. But I'd been using them enough already that wasn't a problem; the only effort it took was learning the different ways to use them -- for example, each crutch moving with the opposing foot, or both crutches moving with the operated side.

The main worry with me was that I could get up and down stairs to the bathroom

Yes, I got/get that
Even now I get back pain if I try and do too much too fast. It seems to be the speed is the problem, not the duration

Its funny how when one joint goes others start to go the same way
It looks like I may have to have some sort of repair/replacement of my right shoulder.
Touch wood my knees are fine. Apart from many hours spent on them (!) I have never seriously injured them

gsdx, how has your back been through all of this? i know that was the biggest hassle for you before...

It's even more of a hassle now. Before, my spine was slightly twisted like a 'J' and my pelvis was tilted downward slightly from the left side to the right side. That was mainly due to my right leg being shorter than my left. Of course, my surgeon didn't know that and measured both legs to the same length. Now, my back is trying to fight its way into the position it has been used to for most of my life and it doesn't like it. My new hip and my back are constantly fighting each other, and neither seems to be winning.

Well, it was one Brit Gay to another - maybe he had some insight into the matter.

I wonder if hanging by your knees from a pull-up bar several times a day would help?

Rowing probably would; if you row with proper form, your muscles have to work in balanced fashion. Time to set up my rowing machine....

I somehow don't picture our good friend Neil hanging upside down on a bar.

I decided it's worth trying. First, I need a proper bar; second, I need to figure out how I'm going to get up there -- running, grabbing the bar, and inverting myself probably isn't going to come as easily as it used to.

Dad hasn't been all that subdued - at least since he got out of the hospital.

Isn't this the exact reason they say "Check with your doctor before starting any new exercise regime"? Yes. Yes it is.

Kuli let some small thing like that get in his way?

Don't be ridiculous.
