I believe the term is still commonly used in America. Personally, I don't like being called "white". Indeed, I am very light-skinned but have got Mediterranean(including North African) and Native American(Cherokee, to be exact) ancestors. I am multiracial.

Culture is not only what is, it is what ought to be. Black and white people do not need to be different, nor are they necessarily, though at times they may be.

If I might stick up for a friend of mine whose Caribbean ancestry goes back if you look far enough to India and Africa. His family moved to Winnipeg. My family moved to Winnipeg. We went to the same school, had the same circle of friends, have a lot of the same ideas about life. He isn't really different from anyone else in that room full of friends when we were growing up, and he is miles away from feeling like the black culture you are talking about is representative of him, though he will easily say he's black to anyone who asks.

I have no big issue with what you've said as long as it is clear that some black and white folks really are the same, and there should be no sense of shame or embarrassment either, for either him or me, that we have so much in common.

First of all, culture is always what it is and not necessarily what you or some other outside observer thinks that it should be.

And, secondly, I don't agree that in an ideal world black and white would be exactly the same in every respect. Nature is smarter than that. The races have useful and necessary adaptations that are more than skin deep.

The fittest humans are the ones best adapted to their environments. And since nature and culture move at their own respective paces, that means most of us are biologically and culturally optimized to function well in the environments of our ancestors. This does imply anyone is better than anyone else.

And I think you are being condescending towards your black friend to suggest that he is exactly like the white people he grew up around and has no connection to his African-American roots. I live in Canada as well and the black people I know are not carbon copies of their white counterparts.

And there are no black and white people who are exactly the same, though it evidently flatters some white people to think that their negroe friends are just darker, assimilated duplicates of themselves. Honey, that blackness is still bubbling beneath the surface of their outward contentment. And it may bubble over on you one of these days!
