I think breastfeeding a baby is a beautiful thing and would not be offended or grossed out if a woman decided to do it in front of me. In fact, it has happened. However, generally speaking, I think modesty should prevent someone from doing in front of strangers. There is a time and place for everything.

To the debate it triggered, if genitalia are welcome anywhere in public, and breastfeeding is cited due to it being perfectly natural (assuming it is for babies who have not yet grown the teeth that nature gave them to progress from the teat), then public masturbation is equally valid. Jerking off is natural, and everyone has seen a penis.

Genitalia aren't welcome anywhere in public, but half of them are 'welcome' in what I consider to be a semi-public setting. If tits were genitalia you wouldn't be able to ditch your shirt and dance around outside whenever you feel like it. Because yeah, you got breasts too, which is something most posters here like to willfully ignore.

If a mother feeds her child and is modest (uses a towel etc. to cover herself) and I am uneasy about it, then perhaps I am the one with the problem.

If nature is the basis for social acceptance, then masturbation or sex would be perfectly acceptable in public. Those are both natural acts. Nature does not hide them away when other species do them.

The premise is fallacious. Being natural is not germane to establishing society's norms. Defecating is natural, but we don't want to watch people doing it on the street corner if a commode is placed there.

It is socially acceptable to consume food in public, hence we have restaurants, it is silly to compare an infant being fed to masturbation.
A breast is not comparable to a penis, a vagina is.

They may say "I have the right to do what 'nature' intends me to do...," but the bottom line is they are receiving attention for their actions. If a mother insists on bringing a baby with her, there are precautions she can take to ensure the supply doesn't run out. Feed the child before you go out; make sure you have enough bottles ready so you don't run out. What happens when a father takes a breast-feeding baby out? The parents make sure there are enough bottles prepared.
