"I'm One Of Those Moms That's Breastfeeding Her Kid Through Puberty"

I don't put much stock in the idea that what's "kosher" for American TV or the FCC should be my personal yardstick for what is or isn't appropriate behavior.

If we went with that idea, male nudity is far more offensive than female nudity.

You must see entirely different news reports than I do because whenever they show gay pride parades they always focus on the most lewd of them all.

True. They're playing to the mainstream's expectation to see gays as over the top and sexually wild.

But I've never seen a non-porn American made movie where you saw penis. I'm sure they exist. But compared to how often you see naked women? No comparison. The only movies I've seen male nudity in were foreign flicks.

Ok, if I see a boob will it turn me str8? What is the big deal, I really am amazed.

Personally even if I don't like it I am not going to tell a woman what to do or that it is inappropriate or anything, I just don't like it.

We have gay pride parades with rather hot guys wearing as little as possible. I am sure that some are topless and some have exposed ass cheeks, we are proud.

Perhaps breast feeding mothers need parades to desensitize us from the stigma of being exposed to an erogenous zone on a woman's body.

Straight people already have a parade, it is called Mardi Gras. You give a girl beads and they're supposed to show their tits. You're mistakenly thinking it has to do with being offended by a womens body, when it doesn't. I have a hard time explaining as to why I don't like it, but it is out there.

I thought us gay guys were liberal and open minded, move over Archie.

Well, you learn something new every day. Unfortunately gay people are just like other people who have prejudices, dislikes and might be racist/sexist,etc and so on.

That comment wreaks of a mikey3000 comment.

Surprisingly a few years ago we wouldn't be having this conversation as breast feeding in public was something that didn't occur.

Plus the fact that most of us are not living in countries where breast feeding in public is not considered acceptable behaviour.

Society has changed as has a woman's outlook on her rights; thus breast feeding in public, teenage pregnancies, unmarried mothers, walking around dressed in just a few pieces of clothing revealing most of their bodies, etc have become an acceptable part of life.

I personally find it offensive as I do teenage pregnancies, semi-nudity in public and single mothers but I don't have the right to inflict my opinions on others.

In the case of breast feeding in public all I have to do is look away.

If I am honest I haven't seen breast feeding in public in the last few years so I don't understand the hue and cry about it.

True, but if I don't like seeing "hot guys wearing as little as possible," I can choose not to attend that event. If I'm in a public place, such as a restaurant, a place I chose to go to, and a mother breastfeeds her baby at the table why should I have this forced on me? I didn't choose to experience it, the situation was forced on me. Yes, I have a choice of either leaving the restaurant or sitting through it, but why should I have to choose? This is a place I came to of my own free will, and now I have to choose to either leave or endure the situation? I don't think so.

You realize that plenty of straight people feel this way about seeing gay couples in public?

"I see things i don't approve of or like seeing in public" kinda strikes me like a suck it up issue.

Not at all. All you have to do is choose not to look. I am presuming that you are capable of controlling your regard and where you focus.

It comes down to "A man (gay or straight or whatever) might see a tit he's not attracted to, because boobs, they're automatically sexual, dontcha know."

And for lucem-ferre,

Seriously, what makes anyone think they're being forced to look at anything? No one locked anyones' head in the position to watch some infant eat. It's clearly not the eating that's the issue or no one would be advocating for them to use bottles in public. It's that womens breasts specifically (because yours are apparently peachy-keen to flaunt outside) that are coded as only sexual.

Never mind that that isn't their purpose, we'll just ignore reality and substitute our own!

Turn your head away if you're that offended and pipe down.

You'll notice no one is trying to cover your ass up. They might mock you for whatever action you're doing but no one is rushing over with grandma's quilt to toss over your head, a disgusted look and the mandate that you can only give food to someone else in certain ways and never outside of your house because someone, somewhere, might see you before they turn their head and mind their own business.

What you choose to do and what you can do are not the same thing. It really isn't that hard to choose to turn your head and mind your own business if you don't want to see something.

If the parade is on Main street and you happen to work there will you call in sick? Miss a days pay? Breast feeding is only forced upon you if the mother over powers you sticks her titty in your mouth and makes you suck.

We all see and hear things that might not be our cup of tea, but I think that live and let live comes into play in this one, we can have our parade and let the world know that we are around, mommy can feed her child.

I stated in an earlier post that modesty should be used, no a woman should not plop her boob out to feed her infant, towels, blankets and other devices can shield us from the stigma of seeing a woman's breast.

Speaking of breasts, have you seen Aretha Franklin's? Jeez, you could feed the entire North American continent.

You guys are too soft. Stay inside the house if you're afraid if seeing icky things.

And before you say why should I have to stay inside ask yourself, why should anyone else have to cater to you?

Perhaps because we all live in something called a society? You really aren't getting what that means for some reason.

How about Dog the Bounty Hunter's wife's boobs? I'm pretty sure those are the North American continent.

Apparently its telling people what to do when you have no idea what its like to be them.

People are offended by your ambiguous bearded singer thinking they shouldn't have to look at that. We say to them the same thing we say to people who don't want to see breastfeeding. Tough titties.

Some people are, and they can change the channel. Can't change the channel at restaurant though.

Oh, I get it! They're good enough to laugh at on television, just don't let 'em in the same room with you.

Gotcha.

So, whens' your neck brace coming off? I'm curious if the hypocrisy'll go with it.

Who is offended? No one here who said they didnt like breast feeding in public said they didnt want to see it because of being offended.

All respect due, that's weaselly. Synonyms for offense include, but are not limited to,

annoyance, anger, resentment, indignation, irritation, exasperation, wrath, displeasure, hard/bad/ill feelings, disgruntlement, pique, vexation...nything that causes someone to feel hurt, angry or upset can be said to cause offense. Not upset as in 'sad', either.

It's also the breaking of a social or moral rule - as both the bearded singer and the breastfeeding often cause offense. The difference is, it's considered 'good' to laugh at the bearded singer so long as you can change the channel/Don't have to breathe the same air.

I also notice a complete and utter lack of any honest engagement of why you lot are allowed to go around in public with your shirts off and some parent can't breastfeed in public even with a covering. That's more than a little hypocritical - it's utterly asinine..

This thread is funny.
1. Getting back to the 12YO at the breast - sounds like part of George RR Martin's "A Song of Ice and Fire" saga, only some of which has come to HBO so far.

As to the larger issue - Breastfeeding in public is more and more a protected right - women should NOT have to go to the rest room, where there's no place comfortable/clean to breast feed.

This really is a mid 20th century on problem - the hang-up with it, I mean. For Millennia it was natural - and women did it discreetly as has been pointed out.

Breasts are only a sex object between a man and a woman being intimate with one another. They are also the food source designed by God - or evolved through nature - take your pick - to feed baby mammals.

Get over yourselves. You want the right to love the person you choose, to have PDA's, marry, but you are reviled by a mother feeding her child - the most selfless act of love out there?

Get real.

None of the people who dont like it are not physically going out stopping women from breast feeding in public, so it isnt a matter of "can't."
