I've heard rumblings about their dire economic state before, but it seems like Trump has shaken them quite badly with his mostly rhetorical taunts. I really don't believe he has any intention of trying make them into the 51st state.

No. Like most of the bile he spews, it is solely for petty vendetta. Trudeau was a prrogressive and oversaw the antithesis of the MAGA state, so he is just an old enemy for Trump,
like Secretary Clinton,
like Senator Warren,
like Speaker Pelosi,
like President Biden,
like Senator Schumer,
like Senator McConnell,
like Ambassador Bolton,
like AG Sessions,
like AG Barr,
like President Obama,
like President Bush,
like President Bush 2,
like VP Pence,
like President Zelenskyy,
like every EU leader,
like the FBI,
like the CIA,
like the EPA,
like Governor Newsom,
like all his first cabinet.

"I can say this from one old guy to another old guy: stop this nonsense. Canada will never join the United States. I can tell you that my parents were not millionaires from New York. They were workers from Shawinigan. But my mother taught us good manners. She would have been ashamed of me if I had treated anyone the way the president treated my prime minister and the president of Ukraine in the last few weeks. The reason we don't want to become American is because of our values as Canadians. We are proud Canadians, and, yes, we owe, in fact, a debt of recognition to Mr. Trump. He has united us as never before."

Jean Chretien PC OM CC KC AdE, 20th Prime Minister of Canada

Correct, he, Trump, is trolling because:

Quoted from:

https://www.politico.com/news/2025/01/08/canada-new-state-electoral-college-001966:

"The answer, our analysis found, is that Democrats would benefit significantly, with the new great state of Canada serving as a kind of second California, a massive blue state that would hold dozens of House seats and create a huge Democratic advantage in the Electoral College."

It'll never happen.

^ Why do you think that the US would grant a country they invade and occupy any legal status like statehood? Or electoral college votes?

Trump is eyeing Canada like Putin regards the Ukraine.

You also seem to be basing it on the premise that there would be traditional presidential elections in the future.

While we see the US on the steady march toward overturning the Constitution and being governed by an autocracy with a wholly compliant legislature and judiciary.

I love how furious Trump is that Canada and the EU might collude to do economic harm to 'the best friend they ever had'.

It is like listening to the psychotic rant of an ex who treats you like shit but then is insanely jealous if you starting fucking someone else.

Howdy. Ok No one wins. Canada can trade wit5h the EU and the EU can trade with Canada, but neither is going to replace the U.S. market and if this becomes "us against them" because of one lunatic, everyone loses while Putin and Xi sit home whacking off about it.

If the leaders of those other countries want to prove they are better than Toad, acting out of spite and pettiness isn't making them look any better.

There are plenty of people in this country willing to work with Canada and Europe and do what we can to mitigate the insanity. Alienating the rest of us isn't better than Toad, it is Toad and going down that road, means no one has a right to complain anymore.

Where are these people in the US?

They aren't speaking out or speaking up or influencing policy in any way,

We're doing exactly what you're doing. There are plenty of people "speaking out" me included. If we want to ensure disaster for everyone dividing ourselves into petty camps acting out of spite will do the trick nicely.

Well...all I know is that we will impose countervailing tariffs. We literally have no choice. Otherwise it is disaster for us and just a sales tax for the US.

On April 2nd, Trump is taking a wrecking ball to the AutoPact and will pretty much kill the auto industry in the US, Canada and Mexico because of the integrated system of production.

People talking and protesting will literally be meaningless. Unless someone literally stops TrumpCo. in its tracks, we are headed to depression.

It's a disaster for us. Toad does not care about the people this will be bankrupt. The hurt will be felt here just as much as in Canada, only in the insane mind of the toad is this somehow "winning."

The pain is what will stop him. By all means take care of yourselves, but then gong the Toad step further and insisting to yourselves that all of us want this, including a huge amount of Toad voters - whom I have zero sympathy for; as far as I'm concerned if you are an Arab who voted for toad, a Latino, a gay man, or whomever, you fucking deserve what you got and fuck the fuck off - legions of us hate this, even in the business community, playing Toad games with glib generalizations intended to sacrifice reality with satisfying illusions is also going to do damage.

If Toad had anywhere near the kind of support that fantasy assumes, we'd be at war right now.

In the end the pain will bring them all down. Just like last time.

We can hope.

Except that my investment guy shifted us toward gold last year...we'd be crying.

But I am expecting that each month now will bring a gradual erosion of American and Canadian equities, bonds and other investments. Because the pain will be eventually global.

It is Smoot Hawley all over again.

And he doesn't care. He is trying to shift the taxation from income tax to consumer tax, which, as I pointed out many posts ago in some thread, we in Canada went through about 20 years ago with the flow through Harmonized Sales Tax that didn't penalize any country or product, but made consumers pay a federal sales tax on just about every product and service.

And it gives universal health care. And infrastructure. And pissed off people paying HST.

What TrumpCo. are doing though, with 25% penalties, is like throwing a sledgehammer into the cogs of the machine. On big ticket items, the winners will be the finance companies, obviously, except that more and more people will just just buy fewer and fewer things...hopefully starving Amazon and Walmart, but sadly this will go all the way down to the mom and pop retail.

Do the US rich care? No. Not until their bottom line...dependent on mass consumerism fails. See Sears.

Will the older people in the US without healthcare from Medicare and Social Security care? A lot. But they will just die.

We didn't sign up for this shit around the world. But we are expecting the people in the US to fix it. Not for us necessarily. But for yourselves.

And we're not seeing any really convincing eveidence that the Dems or anyone is looking to bring the regime to its knees.

Everyone with a single brain cell knows thus will destroy the markets. Toad is using tariffs because it's the only way he can spitefully hurt people without it getting deadlocked in Congress. There is no other agenda. The rich never care until they are forced to care.

The coming disaster is going to take down both parties. Realistically no one party is innocent through complicity or incompetence, One reason it looks like nothing is happening is that anything that is going to happen will happen at a glacial pace. But the lawsuits are out there, and the insanity is losing. We are also in the midst of a Constitutional Crisis because this shit is Unconstitutional and everyone knows that too, so Toad is going to try and eliminate the courts.

If nothing else, the political upheaval is happening slowly, the generation that votes mostly for Toad is also the biggest one, and it's dying.

From your keyboard to God's eyes.

I can think of no better outcome than the devastation of both US political parties...but I also have observed over 20 years what happened in the USSR and I am not sure I don't see the same thing happening in the US.

The U.S. will not break into separate units. We don't have Russia's history. With the exceptions of Texas and Hawaii all states began as American States. (no, the 13 colonies were not independent jurisdictions until they became American States - for all the nitpickers out there.)

When we didn't elect Junior shrub, I began to believe that a parliamentary system was a better idea, but that is going to take a Constitutional revision that isn't going to happen until it hurts less than keeping the two-party system.

There also needs to be a devastation of most of the leaders on the Left, for undermining their own causes with belligerent grandstanding, the inability to compromise strategically, litmus tests, and taking the insane position that a Republican was better than an ideologically un-pure Democrat. Fuck them too. It took me years to realize how fucking selfish a lot of the far left was up there on their marble pedestals.

What needs to happen to the right speaks for itself.
