Is dry soup powder healthy ?

Semi related fact alert:

Did you know that originally Ketchup was devised because tomato processors were looking for something to do with rotten tomatoes?

^ The trick is to add only a little bit of water at the beginning, make a paste and then add a little more water to thin....then you can add the rest of the water and get the wallpaper ready to put up on the walls.

I use military-surplus mashed potatoes. If you get lazy, you can just spread them on the wall for texture and paint.

And remember kids.

If it is made in a plant it isn't good for you.

If It is made from a plant, eat up
.

That's dangerous advice.....

well, wealthy people would eat fresh and healthy.
So rareboy's advice is understandable.

So, I felt compelled to register because the amount of stuff being thrown around in this thread is just funny beyond belief ^^

1. Maltodextrin is a polysaccharide of glucose units. Glucose is sugar. Sugar isn't unhealthy.

2. Corn Starch is well, starch. Not unhealthy.

3. Beverage whitener is a name used to describe a substitute for milk. It is used as it does not contain lactose for those lactose-intolerant. It usually is just corn-syrup, which is basically chains of sugar.

4. Vegetable fat is well fat. Not unhealthy. Healthier than animal fats.

5. Glucose syrup solids. More sugar.

6. Milk protein is dehydrated milk. Not unhealthy.

7. emulsifiers (471, 472c) different kinds of thickeners to give the soup the proper consistence. Not unhealthy.

8. mineral salts (330, 450) Salt for taste.

9. Anti-caking agents are basically stuff that absorbs water. E551 is Silicondioxide. Not unhealthy.

10. antioxidant (306). Used to keep the oxygen in the air from oxidizing the contents. It absorbs the oxygen before it can reach the other ingredients. Not unhealthy.

11. Potato starch. Starch is not unhealthy.

12. Dextrose. A sugar, not unhealthy.

13. Yeast Extract is yeast without the cell walls. You eat this whenever you consume bread. Not unhealthy.

14. Natural flavours. General name for flavours obtained directly from natural sources. Not unhealthy.

15. dehydrated chicken meat (2%). Not unhealthy.

16. Onion powder (2%). Dehydrated union. Same as any kind of spice. Not unhealthy.

17. vegetable gum (412) . More thickener, not unhealthy.

18. chicken fat (0.3%). Chicken fat? Nothing unhealthy about that.

19. Turmeric. Orange dye. Directly from a plant. Not unhealthy.

20. Parsley. Spices. Not unhealthy.

21. Chives. Small onions. Not unhealthy.

So in general we can conclude that while this might not be the best source of energy, none of it's ingredients are unhealthy by itself. So consuming this in moderation should not pose a problem.

Also I study biochemistry at university, so I do believe I know what I am talking about.

How do you know sugar isn't unhealthy?

Let's turn this around: How do you know sugar is unhealthy?

Almost everything digestible you eat, with the exception of some proteins, fat and other compounds, gets turned into glucose at some point.

ok for the life of my I will never understand why people look at a list like that and go.. that sounds tasty and I should make that for dinner...

Once I look at the ingredients list I almost always put it back and walk away slowly...

If you want it then eat it and don't look at the back. :p

SiO2 is found in water in lots of springs, so it's arguably "natural".

But, Naliya, having taken some chemistry myself, I know that you're skimping on your #10 -- whether or not that anti-oxidant is healthy or not depends on which specific antioxidant it is. Got a guess?

I once went to a barbecue where the host gave us a menu that ALL looked that way. The fun was figuring out what each messy set actually meant. I ordered what I thought was going to be a burger, and got a steak sandwich -- not bad, I guess. But the point is that EVERYTHING we eat can be listed that way, if we break it down.

I liked the pizza parlor where I went to college, that I could call and order mangled bovine muscle tissue, rehydrated tropical fruit bits, lacerated fungus, and dead beetles, and they knew I wanted a hamburger, ... well, see if you can figure it out.

That is true, in this case it is Tocopherol which is a natural anti-oxidant coming from plants. I think we can call this safe for consuming.

Thanks for posting Naliya.

In my line of work I see hysterical diet fads and unscientific food phobias come and go with the years.

There are many people who legitimately suffer from dietary problems, and there are foods which are either toxic or a metabolic challenge.

But more than that, there is fear, ignorance and faddism. People even tend to mix their diet up with their sense of identity; veganism, for instance, makes one a vegan. This adds such a strong emotional component to the issue it can be hard to discuss.

Bringing the facts to the table around diet and nutrition as you're doing really helps ground the conversation. ..|

The soup taste nice but after rareboy's post,
it doesn't taste nice anymore. :(

It says on the box:
*No artificial colours or flavours
*No added MSG

I think the question is, is soup powder healthy?

Just because many of the ingredients are not identified as unhealthy does not make it healthy.

Normally, you are a champion of science and evidence. Reconsider Naliya's post #39.

Given the discussion itself in the thread, the title may have more aptly been: Is dry soup powder unhealthy?

I don't think anyone ever said that. Your post made it look like every single ingredient was picked out from some kind of "toxic but cheap ingredients" list which is just false.

The soup in itself may not be the best kind of food you can eat as it's relatively empty calories. But eating it once in a while won't kill you.

Yeah but the soup doesn't get moldy easily true?
Anything that doesn't get moldy easily (hard to break down) is not too healthy true?

Is that mean the soup is not fatty ? :D
