Re: Concerned about Janet Jackson's Career

what career? janet jackson hasn't had a career in this century.

her fans are delusional if they think this "performance" is a career-reviving event. the kindest thing one can say is, it was so dated.

the only thing this years vwma will be remembered for is taylor swift vs kanye west. it totally eclipsed the mj tribute. and if that wouldn't of happened, even madonna's puffy-faced intro would have been more talked bout than janet's performance. as a matter of fact the kanye incident probably saved her some embarrassement.

Re: Concerned about Janet Jackson's Career

The problem - if indeed it IS a problem - is that there isn't much a template for this type of female artist to follow.

First, let me make a distinction between a singer (like, say, Janet Jackson) and a musician (like, say, Prince). I'm not putting one over the other, but I do think that they won't have the same options.

Musicians are usually able to age semi-gracefully. They can perform an acoustic set, for instance, or perform more "adult-oriented material". (In this case, that means aimed at the over 30 set, not sexually explicit material.) These sorts of things tend not to sell in the same range as they did in their prime, and they tend not to win them any new fans, although they oft make their already-established fans happy.

These options, or something similar, ARE open to singers. Singers can mount Vegas (or Vegas-style) shows, for instance, or they can do an album of "older songs' or standards. This is the sort of path we've seen Celine Dion take, and Cyndi Lauper has tried the "old song" path with various degrees of success.

But the problem with the female vocalists in the here and now - Madonna, Janet, Mariah - is that many of them have made their bread-and-butter in the club/dance scene. They've all at least attempted something that might be considered "mature". Madonna's "Oh Father" and I'm Breathless nostalgia exercises, Janet's "Again", and Mariah's Charmbracelet all might be looked as as attempt to push them outside the dance arena. But for whatever reasons - midlife crisis, faltering record sales, what have you - they've all been sucked back in. Madonna and Mariah's last album were attempts to stay current (and not entirely successful ones, IMHO), and both have been relying pretty heavy on their producers and ProTools for the last several years. Janet is a bit more organic, but she's been stuck in that "I'm a sexy woman inside" schtick for so long, it sounds like she doesn't even know of anything else to do.

And to be honest, what CAN they do? What would a GOOD dance-artist-in-her-40s album sound like? I think Whitney's latest, while not perfect by any means, does give some indication. Bring it down a notch. Accept your current vocal range. Don't pretend you're something you're not. Not everything has to be a ballad, but that doesn't mean the uptempo songs need to be club tracks, either. You CAN write and record an uptempo song that isn't club-ready. :)

Re: Concerned about Janet Jackson's Career

It was an amazing performance and with the right CD, she can make a full comeback.

Re: Concerned about Janet Jackson's Career

Wow, Janet did the damn thing at the VMAs. I just wished it was longer, like what was being said in those rumors. Maybe Madonna's long ass speech shortened lol. With the right people, she can make a comeback.

Re: Concerned about Janet Jackson's Career

^^ "Make Me" is AMAZING!!!!

The main difference between Janet and Michael is that Michael led the producers, but Janet's producers lead her...

That's not to say that she's not talented, but starting with Control back in the 80's, she was a molded artist, her 'vision' came from Jimmy Jam, et al, not her own creation.

You do have a valid point. But...Janet SHARES creation with the producers. Control is a true example of her coming into her own. It actually started with the producers telling Janet to write down her thoughts and from that, the three compiled songs that defined her wanting to make a name and status for herself at 19 years old. At that point in her life, she was famous for 12/19 years of her life, controlled by her father, and went through a divorce.

what career? janet jackson hasn't had a career in this century.

her fans are delusional if they think this "performance" is a career-reviving event. the kindest thing one can say is, it was so dated.

I disagree. She's had "The Nutty Professor 2" (2000) and "Why Did I Get Married?" (2007) as box-office #1s. The first MTV Icon in 2001. This decade, she was awarded 2 Grammys and 2 American Music Awards for "All For You", Lifetime/Inspiration Achievement Awards from Mobo Awards, Nickelodeon Kids Choice, Essence Awards, Billboard Music, Soul Train, Radio Music, and MTV Japan. Best Supporting Actress for "Why Did I Get Married?" at the NAACP Image Awards and the GLAAD Vanguard Award in 2008

She's had "Doesn't Really Matter" (#1, 2000), "All For You" (#1, 2001), "Someone To Call My Lover" (#3, 2001), and "Feedback" (#19, 2008) on the Billboard Hot 100 Singles Charts. "Call On Me" (2006) hit #1 on the Top R&B/Hip-Hop Songs. "All For You", "Just A Little While", "All Nite (Dont Stop)", "So Excited", and "Feedback" all hit #1 on the Billboard Hot Dance/Club Play Charts.

In the USA alone, "All For You" (#1, 2001) sold 3.1 million, Damita Jo (#2, 2004) sold 1 million, 20 Y.O. (#2, 2006) sold 655,000 (off of two singles "Call On Me" and "So Excited", and Discipline sold 446,000 (off the strength of one promoted single, "Feedback).

The problem - if indeed it IS a problem - is that there isn't much a template for this type of female artist to follow.

I do understand your point and agree on some levels. BUT...it's not fair to compare artists when they offer different things. Janet is a singer/dancer...moreso a dancer that sings. Don't expect her to pull out the guitars and tone it down completely when that's WHO SHE IS as an entertainer. She's not going to be singing ballads and wearing big old gowns just because she's 43. It's a double standard and not fair that we have to mold artists into boxes. She's happy doing what she's doing and she calls the shots. It's her success and her failure. If you don't like, don't support it. But you're always welcome to share your opinion and that's fine. :D

Re: Concerned about Janet Jackson's Career

NO ONE IS PERFECT!! Janet is human. And that tumble was nothing to sneeze at. She got right back up and continued...the show must go on. She's a Jackson after all.

But this new song MAKE ME, is near perfection!! There's life after death. No time for sorrow and all the negativity, get up and groove. This is tailor made for those with positive energy and a lust for life. Or those who need a pick up in their spirit. I LOVE IT!!

 I'm not going to argue you considering all you do is slam her and one of the the jackasses that finds anyway to drag someone down just to drag her down

She's had some of the best remixes and I think she comes right after Madonna when it comes to reinvention.

Does she have a new song?

Re: What are you favorite Janet Jackson songs?

I've always been particularly fond of "Love Will Never Do (Without You)." I just love they way it gradually builds and climaxes, err, culminates in that image of the bald dark-skinned black guy with the gleaming white teeth (in the video)! Sister girl was way ahead of her time.

Re: Can Janet Jackson Have a Comeback?

She's still here. And she's making music that she loves for those who appreciate it. Not every artist can have a string of #1s for their entire career. She's a performer and that's what she'll continue to do. :)

In other words HELL NO. Her "career" is deader than Michael.

Whatever happened to her single " Make me"? Buried faster than Michael corpse.
