Re: Janet 2011 Tour: Number Ones Up Close and Personal

I will be at the March 21 NYC show (my hometown).

And due to there not being much Janet love at JUB, I'll bump this thread up with info each week!

Re: Janet 2011 Tour: Number Ones Up Close and Personal

^I couldn't agree with you more. I'm a huge fan of Janet, but changes need to be made to her live shows. Do fans still want to hear "Rhythm Nation" and sit through a "Whimsical" section tour after tour?

Rhythm Nation is one of those songs she's most well known for, so I doubt she'd drop it. Also, she hasn't really done a the Whimsical since 2001

"Rhythm Nation" I never liked but she could change the arrangement AND drop the choreography if she wants to breathe new life into it. And, yep, the whimsical section is what I was referring to (it's stale). She could do all those "whimsy" songs but mix 'em up with a diff theme.

Well she hasn't had a real tour since All For You in '01. I like Janet but I think she's stubborn. She really should just go for broke now because it isn't like her career has been in any great shape since the Superbowl debacle.

LIES!

We're entitled to our opinions, but at least state facts.

Superbowl made a dent in her career, but she's still going strong and that was 7 years ago, she is still making waves.

Her films, greatest hits release, press, and this tour are proof of that.

Re: Janet 2011 Tour: Number Ones Up Close and Personal

Another date has been added:

March 15th - Wang Theater - Boston, MA

We agree to disagree.

For me, Janet is a singer first, then an actress. She hasn't had a bona fide hit since "Someone To Call My Lover" (2001). Keep in mind: Janet is no stranger to Top 10 hits so it was quite noticeable how poor the showing was for "Damita Jo" (there was nothing resembling a hit). Same story with her subsequent albums. IMO, Janet's Super Bowl performance killed her singing career.

Her acting efforts have fared better but for a mainstream star like Janet, she's been relegated to black-oriented films. Nothing wrong with that but it's just surprising because prior to the wardrobe malfunction, Janet had definite crossover appeal. Now, not so much.

That's good she's touring but it looks like small one (in NYC she's not even at MSG; LA, no Staples Center date). Best of luck to Janet.

What goes up, must come down.

No one can maintain the same level of success throughout their entire career.

Janet is a mainstream artist, but she's not a CURRENT artist. Her age and music don't appeal to the biggest music buying demographic. Everything she's doing now is for her fans and her love of working, because if she were to put out a single and album tomorrow, it would have limited appeal.

And this tour is called "Up Close and Personal", hence no big arenas/venues. :)

And Janet fell hard when she did NOT need to.

That's where as a FAN I'm disappointed in Janet. I hope she wasn't the one whose decision it was to show her breast at the Super Bowl AKA Baseball, Apple Pie & Chevrolet. If it was, then she's to blame for the downward spiral. I get the point that she isn't a newbie but that scandal could've been avoided. Bad call.

That was 7 years ago. We're not here to be stuck on the Super Bowl.

Regardless of how hard or soft one falls from their peak, a decline is a decline.

Yes, the albums failed. yes, concerts were canceled. She is not to blame for any "downward spiral" when her commercial appeal was already past it's prime. But one thing has remained the same --- her resilience!

Since then, Janet has steadily worked her way out of a rough patch and I'm just glad that she continues to do what she loves. She's no longer in the race to #1, so all her energy and effort is in the right place --- performing!

Fair enough. I apologize to you and the JJ fans for being a hard-ass about the wardrobe malfunction. I was just furious that a pop start of her experience (with a proven track record that singers would kill for) would do something as DUMB as what happened at the Super Bowl.

Re: Janet 2011 Tour: Number Ones Up Close and Personal

Janet has so many signature songs that she can do without performing a lot of her back catalog, was really what I meant. Anything pre-All For You should stay behind unless she is going perform the songs differently. There may not have been a Whimsical section on her last tour but the same medley of songs was used just shuffled around. ("Love Will Never Do" can stay, I love that song.)

Word. Not only all of that but Janet has been using the same vocal track from '89. (I love RN.) One song I can't stand is "When I Think of You." Goodness! That song is always included during the Whimsical sections of her tours.

Same circus meets toy store atmosphere tour after tour. ](*,) And I also don't like the picking a guy out of the audience to bring up and Janet grinds on him.

And, yep, changing the arrangements (like Madonna's been doing for years) would help with her old catalog.

LOL. Great description, that is so true. After Janet's fantastic "Velvet Rope Tour" everything she has done since pales in comparison. A lot of songs and segments should have been placed on a shelve because like you said: it's the same tour but with different outfits. The "All For You" tour was pretty much a carbon copy of VRT just with more colorful outfits. I too am sick of that segment, I'm no prude but that segment has gotten more and more vulgar. There's nothing left for her to do during that segment now, except actual sex.

Not to turn this into a Madonna vs. Janet situation, but I agree. I only recently started getting into Madonna and I now fully understand why she is still packing stadiums. Just overall amazing shows with great visuals, concepts, and a good balance of older material (re-imagined & remixed) with songs from her current album.

No need to apologize.

And it wasn't Janet's actions, it was the REACTION that made it such a big deal.

Moving along....

1) I wish the medleys were switched or would go away. I'd love for some full songs!

2) The Rhythm Nation vocal track has been different on each tour. This recent one has a more nasal tone and is layered with another vocal.

No comment on the other artist being mentioned in the thread, but that's why Janet and the other artist mentioned are different artists with different circumstances. No two performers have the same career graph.

Janet is Janet; Madonna is Madonna. That being said, I agree: Janet could take some inspiration from how Madonna reworks her old school material for her tours.

And it wasn't Janet's actions, it was the REACTION that made it such a big deal.

I think you're letting her off the hook. This was the Super Bowl, not the VMAs. I doubt if her pride will allow her to admit but I do believe that Janet REGRETS her decision to execute the lame publicity stunt. And I felt bad for her that Justin Timberlake got off easy. In fact, he went on to become a superstar.

That is true.

Janet landed safely in Singapore and the concert is tomorrow!!

Re: Janet 2011 Tour: Number Ones Up Close and Personal

The Singapore show was awesome. Most fans were dancing thru the show. The energy Janet has on stage was amazing!!!

The setting was a little too simple. From the background video to the decent stage. Somehow that achieves an upclose and personal feel.

You can see in the Youtubes that Janet really scaled down. I wouldn't be surprised if she had only 2 or 3 costumes for the whole show. Glad you enjoyed it.
