Re: Janet 2011 Tour: Number Ones Up Close and Personal

SINGAPORE INDOOR STAIDUM REVIEW

http://is.asia-city.com/events/news...on-number-ones-close-personal-world-tour-2011

She did say it was going to be one that’s up close and personal. And boy, did Janet Jackson live up to that promise.

Performing before a capacity crowd at the Singapore Indoor Stadium with an opening medley of “Pleasure Principle,” “Control,” “What Have You Done for Me Lately,” and “Feedback,” the Queen of Pop, sporting a short crop and clad in a sexy futuristic costume, showed us that she still got the moves.

The concert here, which is part of a 35-city global trek, is in support of her new album Number Ones. Her first outing in three years, it was originally scheduled to begin on February 14 in Hong Kong but the opening date was moved to February 4 in Manila following considerable fan requests.

With a company of dancers, a five piece band and three backup singers, the 44-year old who is on her second stop off her Number Ones, Up Close & Personal World Tour 2011, ruled the stage last night—singing and dancing (like in her Control days). Carefully choreographed and calculated, the singer breezed through high energy dance numbers with a finesse that will put her younger contemporaries to shame.

Although there were some annoying pregnant pauses in between sets: video montages of some of her movies and shots of her past pictorials that were obviously shown to allow the singer to do her costume changes; the crowd (a predominantly older one) don’t seem to mind.

The second set saw Jackson, emerging in a stunning pink gown with sequinned shoulders, slowing things down to sing ballads, showcasing her softer side and vocal range in songs such as “Let’s Wait Awhile” and “Again.”

The crowd was on the quiet side to begin with, but exploded with cheers for hits like “Nasty”, “That's The Way Love Goes”, “All For You” and “Escapade”.

"Do you want more?" Janet asked her fans mid-way. "Do you want more of this?" she teased, pointing to herself. Of course, everyone did. Although most of her songs came in bite-sized versions, some arranged in medley form, they all nevertheless sounded amazing.

The final set saw the concert taking on a rock and roll edge with a medley of “Black Cat”, “Scream” and “Rhythm Nation” before closing the show with “Make Me” and “Together Again.”

Stripped down and minimal, there weren’t any pyrotechnics or effects to this concert, which allowed fans to connect more closely to Jackson. The performance was, after all, about Janet and her fans. It was all about being up close and personal.

sINGAPORE INDOOR STADIUM - THE STRAIT TIMES REVIEW

Janet Shines, Again

The last time she was on stage here, Janet Jackson broke down and sobbed.

Milking her ballad Again, she sat in a chair, her head on her arms and put on a show worthy of a Tony award.

That was 16 years ago, when everything was bigger - the hair, the set, entourage, budget and melodrama.

She was theatrical before Lady Gaga, racy before Rihanna and bootylicious before Beyonce. She was a huge star this city embraced; the last time a Jackson of that calibre came by had been in 1993, when her brother Michael performed.

Her top-ticket price of $200 - at the time, among the costliest - was nothing to a sell-out crowd, which included fans from Indonesia and Brunei.

She was also about midway through her oeuvre, and recently minted as the first and only artist in history to produce seven top five hits from one album, Rhythm Nation 1814 (1989).

Better known at the time for pushing the boundaries of sexual tolerance among her mainstream audience, her name was free of that silly Super Bowl boob stunt, and she was still secretly hitched to collaborator Rene Elizondo, whom she had referred to in a Straits Times interview with an enigmatic smile.

This time. Jackson, now 44, brought to the stage a different sensibility, a pared-down set, fewer back-up dancers and less distraction.

It kept with the lukewarm reception of her 2008 studio album, Discipline, which sorely missed the hit-making magic of her long-time producer Jimmy Jam and Terry Lewis.

Still, you cannot sniff a body of work that includes 35 chart-toppers in 20 years, more than 100 million albums sold worldwide and being the 11th best-selling female recording artist in the United States.

Even without the mid-1990s tassels and braids, her 1.63m frame still looked larger than life.

Sporting a short crop and body-consuits, Jackson cut a compact figure as she zipped through her Number Ones to an older, but no less ardent, audience of more than 7000.

It took them all of an instant to get to their feet for opening number The Pleasure Principle.

Generally better heeled and toting more mobile phones than a decade ago, they easily forgave the hour-late start and it only took her dedication of Someone to Call My Lover to this country to raise the screams.

Moving through Control, What Have You Done For Me Lately, Feedback, You Want This, Alright, Miss You Much and Nasty, she kept them bopping in the aisles, replete with the signature moves that female fans so often tried to duplicate in dance clubs through the 1990s.

She paused only for a video montage of her acting highlights, from her debut on 1920s television sitcom Good Times to her starring role in John Singleton's Poetic Justice (1993).

Then, reappearing in a rhinestone studded grown for her ballad section, she drew them in with Nothing, Come Back To Me, Let's Wait A While and Again, the last of which was a sincere, reined-in version that was a fast cry from its first outing in 1995.

Another break bought with it a montage of iconic images spanning her career, from her cherubic beginnings in the early 1980s to more sexually charged incarnations from recent years.

She kept us the pace on Doesn't Really Matters, Escapade, Love Would Never Do (Without You), When I Think Of You, All For You, That's The Way Love Goes, Black Cat, If, Scream and Rhythm Nation.

With no surprises and a safe set-list, fans had to be happy. Still, it would have been a treat to hear tracks from her critically acclaimed concept album, The Velvet Rope (1997).

Really, it was her encore that captured the depth of experience and quiet confidence that now define her work.

Together Again, her gentle tribute to her late older brother, was beautifully understated and quite likely the defining difference between Janet then and now.

There were no tears this time, not from her anyway.

ANOTHER SINGAPORE REVIEW

Jackson still number one
By: Taina Teravainen

Considering that this is Janet Jackson’s first set of live performances in 3 years and a whopping 16 years since she has set foot in Singapore, fans definitely came out in full force for her Number Ones: Up Close and Personal world tour which hits our shores fresh from its opening night in Manila.

After all, Singapore had been selected among 35 countries as a result of frantic fan votes online and Singapore came in second in terms of the city with the highest demand for the pop diva.

Jackson, who has sold more than 100 million albums worldwide, performed in celebration of her best hits from second compilation album, Number Ones.

The concert was even attended by celebrities, Malaysian singer, Siti Nurhaliza, and US country superstar, Taylor Swift, who also kicked off her Speak Now world tour at the Singapore Indoor Stadium last night.

It was a mass family-affair-slash-date night and the crowd, consisting of large family groups and couples, took their time filling up the seats in the Singapore Indoor Stadium. They were more than supportive even despite an hour’s wait, riddled with screenings of Jackson’s videos such as the music video of her song, “If”, while her video dedication of “Someone to Call My Lover” to Singapore promised the most intimate show possible.

Jackson burst out in a futuristic metallic grey skin-tight suit, running through an energetic medley of songs including “The Pleasure Principle”, “Feedback”, “Miss You Much” and “Nasty”, showing off her short cropped hair and dance moves that could silence even the most fervent of her haters.

The choreography was impeccable and made for an amazingly riveting stage performance, aided by her bevy of dancers, band and backup singers. Her voice was, of course, in top form as well – an amazing feat coupled with her punishing dance routines, straight out from some of her music videos. The stage never ever left Jackson’s control; and the absence of all special effects kept the focus on her and the few dancers flanking her.

In between 2 breaks for costume changes, video montages transported fans back to the days where she first dazzled us on screen in her 1970s debut on TV sitcom, Good Times while the photos captured the Jackson’s transformational journey and evolution from sweet sixteen to sexy diva today.

When Janet reemerged in a salmon pink gown with sparkly sequined shoulder pads and heels, it was with soaring ballads like “Come Back To Me” “Let’s Wait Awhile” and “Again”, which the mostly older crowd swayed their way through.

Numbers like “Escapade”, “All For You”, “Doesn’t Really Matter” and “All For You” got the entire stadium on their feet again, and they remained standing right through to the last part of the night, which brought out Janet’s more rock-tinged songs like “Black Cat”, “Rhythm Nation” and “Scream”. One letdown was how brief some of the songs were – such is the dilemma of a diva such a Janet Jackson, with a repertoire of 35 number one songs to choose from.

She closed the show with “Together Again” from 1996 album, The Velvet Rope. It was a rather bittersweet moment, as Janet, who had spent her whole career asserting herself as an artist separate from Michael Jackson, flashed childhood photos of themselves in a tribute to her elder brother and departed King of Pop.

The whole stadium sang along to the lyrics “I know we’ll be together again because/ Everywhere I go/ Every smile I see/ I know you are there/ Smiling back at me”.

It was truly a night catered to her fans, devoid of pyrotechnics or any special effects, but nobody present would have been able to dispute that Ms Jackson still has it.

Re: Janet 2011 Tour: Number Ones Up Close and Personal

JARKARTA - this person wasn't even a fan, but she gives props where they are due

For lovers of her hard-pumping R&B, Janet Jackson’s live concert Wednesday night in Jakarta was a massive hit. Outside the Jakarta Convention Center venue for the “Janet’s Number Ones: Up Close and Personal” concert, ticket scalpers were much in evidence, hoping to earn a premium from the eager Jackson-bound crowd.

I admit up front, I am not a fan. I just know some of her songs, mainlyfrom my younger years. But I have to admit that the one and half hour-long concert got thousands in the audience, including me, “hypnotized” as we stepped back in time with her old hits — her Number Ones.

Opening the concert was a video clip of “All Nite, (Don’t Stop)” playing on a large screen dedicated to the “incredible people of Jakarta.” Fans got appropriately hysterical as she appeared on a Jakarta stage for the first time, seductively dressed in a catwoman-like costume and short haircut.

The first part of the show was filled with Jackson’s fast tracks, including “Miss You Much,” a big hit single from1989. Jackson seemed to know exactly what her fans wanted other than her songs: the dance moves. The choreographry was spectacular with the dancers dressed in signature Janet’s Army uniforms. Jackson, who will turn 45 this year, may not have quite the looks she once had, but Michael’s younger sister appeared to have superb stamina all the way to the end.

After intermission, the singer reappeared on stage in a more feminine dress for slow numbers. The audience, mostly 30-something and middle to upper class, seemed transported by tracks such as “Come Back To Me” and “Again.”

Although the event organizer had promised an “intimate” concert, Jackson’s show was hardly a living room performance and the distance from the performer — phsyically and emotionally — was palpable. Communication with the audience mainly consisted of Jackson shouting, “Jakarta!” and “I love you, Jakarta!” Some fans walked away feeling she was going through the motions for her Asian fans but was not really into it. I expected her to say something personal about Michael, especially when the screen showed flashes from her late brother’s videos and photos. She didn't.

One of her most anticipated songs, “That’s the Way Love Goes,” highlighted the third segment of the concert. Wearing a costume that reminded me of Michael’s style, Jackson paused a bit as she saw that the audience even in this far-away outpost of pop culture knew the song so well that she gave them a chance to sing it out loud without her.

The evening closed with more uptempo pop and hard-charging dance steps.

Then it was over. Jackson and her crew simply walked off the the stage as the lights went out. The audience was silent, wondering whether she would return. After a few minutes, some members of audience began stomping and shouting for more “Janet!” The living legend did as asked and expected, closing the show in style with and leaving fans wanting more.

And that’s the way love goes.

Re: Janet 2011 Tour: Number Ones Up Close and Personal

There are many more articles, but you guys get the point...she's going back to places she hasn't toured since she was at her peak with the janet. album, so she's doing her thing and proving her naysayers wrong

Thanks for the reviews. I laughed at the Singapore reviews referring to the mostly "older" crowd. I thought 30 or 40 was the new 21. ;)

Re: Janet 2011 Tour: Number Ones Up Close and Personal

I love this song. All For You is one of my favorite albums from her and one of her most underrated, IMO. I think most critics commented the sound was too "light and fluffy," but lyrically it perfectly reflected what was going on in her life. She was newly single, yearning for love, and calling out her ex-hubby.

Just as expected... The stage would be better back in the US. Seems like a 'safe' show this time!

The grand exit does look interesting.
