Fred Phelps was a Civil Rights attorney during the segregation years. In that period, he was just as hateful towards open racists as he was towards gays later on. Hence, SJW.

Hate towards the hateful is still hate. Don't let it consume you, or you'll turn into Fred Phelps.

I think we have completely different experiences of the term SJW and thus we may as well put it to one side. I only see it get used by massive tools who want to call people faggots and not get called on it - that is why I jumped on it, it tends to be an insult in my experience to stop minorities talking - not a title people wear. If they are doing it, it's probably because they are told to shut up constantly by others and the internet gives them a place to let their aggression out - its not manifesting itself in reality. I don't hear about gangs of transgender women going around killing cis men (the other way round does still happen though).

Perhaps you are correct; I confess to never have really heard the term SJW, and my definition of it comes from Urban Dictionary.

Social Justice Warrior. A pejorative term for an individual who repeatedly and vehemently engages in arguments on social justice on the Internet, often in a shallow or not well-thought-out way, for the purpose of raising their own personal reputation. A social justice warrior, or SJW, does not necessarily strongly believe all that they say, or even care about the groups they are fighting on behalf of. They typically repeat points from whoever is the most popular blogger or commenter of the moment, hoping that they will "get SJ points" and become popular in return. They are very sure to adopt stances that are "correct" in their social circle.

The SJW's favorite activity of all is to dogpile. Their favorite websites to frequent are Livejournal and Tumblr. They do not have relevant favorite real-world places, because SJWs are primarily civil rights activists only online.

The SJW absorbs this and later complains in response to a Huffington Post article about a 10-year-old feminist's letter, because the 10-year-old called the color pink "prissy".

You sure you're paraphrasing correctly? I've never heard any of them, even the most hatefully worded, describe it as a joke. Letting off steam at large groups because you're frustrated or that they've shown shitty behavior, yes, but not saying it to get a few laughs and a check.

Shit happens. If you're going to joke about a thing, try aiming what could be considered nasty words either across or above you, that way uf there's less likely to be hurting feelings (ex: white people these days, you know how terribly wounded we are when cracker is hurled o'er the fence, mmhm) and check that you're not kicking gratuitously someone in the face below you. Well, that and be original, don't rest your laurels on tropes. Unfortunately quite a few people do that.

No one here was ragging on her, but you brought your own fight from another website. You are essentially picking a fight here by provoking detractors who were silent until you tried to canonize her.

I still haven't seen anyone actually rag on her yet. Disagreeing over whether her humor was exploitative and needlessly cruel isn't ragging, I don't think. Ragging would be saying that I was surprised they didn't put one of those cheap, 8 inch barbies from the dollar store to replace her on the show once she kicked the bucket during vocal surgery - The barbie has less plastic and a better voice. Tho you'd have to stick her in the microwave first, to get that 'Joan Rivers' look.

Now that's ragging. The same kind and type she did. And while she admittedly could take as well as dish, her followers somehow....can't.

I think I just took against the SJW jibes because the place it normally gets used is to just down debate about important things. The places where the term SJW tends to get used are places were homophobic, racist, and transphobic language are chucked to be edgy and someone has called them on it - everyone turns around and starts screaming SJW and tries to shut down criticism.

That's exactly the connotation of when it gets used. Exactly like when people try to shut something down by calling it "PC bullshit." That's virtually always code for I'm entitled to my belittling and denigrating attitudes and dismissals of every group or experience that I'm not part of and anyone who objects is giving me this PC shit.

Got to agree with this - I stayed off the thread about here (and the one about her being ill) because I don't like here and did not see the point of getting involved. There was a correct space for talking about her if you liked her, and we did not need a fight about how awful she was - this entire thread was clearly designed to get people talking about how they did not like her.

Still even in the parts of the internet where people are gunning for her, its not all that bad. The worst I have seen was on a few socialist groups I am part of:

I gotta inquire, though, xbox, did you really think everyone here liked or appreciated Rivers? I ask because we (or at least I) was decent enough to stay out of a mourning thread (while Rivers herself wouldn't have been), but when you make a thread specifically to bitch at criticisms and emotional vents that were located on a totally different website you're somehow surprised that people who had more public respect than she did pop out of the woodwork because that wasn't a grieving thread on that other website, just like this isn't a mourning thread? But here's the thing. Joan was a comedian who's sold mission in life was to make people laugh. Even she would laugh at jokes about her death because that was what she was all about.


But to go around and say "Joan Rivers was a peice of shit, I hope she suffered when she died." Isn't funny, it's fucking cruel.

I'm a little bit perplexed at the naivete involved at someone who would see comments like this at a place like 4chan, reddit or tumblr and would apparently never consider that getting the exact reaction you are having is the motivation for many people there to say things like this.

Innit, I think all people have done is call those canonising her by pointing out shitty things she said - hardly that mean. I mean the easy thing to go after with her is her looks, but she done that all herself - so I am not sure what people are meant to be saying.
