Where's the Kevin Spacey thread?
I don't mean a fan thread, just one about his scandal.
It should be a Hot Topic, not a celebrity thing.
There is so much wrapped up in the story and accusations that are in fact gay issues.
First, there is no pattern of underage assaults, only one 14-year-old's accusation and of a man who was admittedly drunk. I'm no fan of using alcohol as an excuse, but it does affect behavior, so is relevant when addressing questions of volition and discretion. To be sure, rape would still be rape, but that isn't the accusation.
And "sexual assault" has come to mean a lot of things. Many men on this forum have done exactly what Kevin Spacey is pilloried for, namely groping another male in a party situation or at a bar as a sort of pass, or overture. It certainly isn't done anywhere or to anyone, as it certainly would lead to getting bashed or shot. So, we do have a different standard for gay encounters than for public behavior in a non-sexual place.
Spacey is also accused by several former industry employees, as well as relatives of other celebrities, etc. What seems most relevant about them is the silence of the alleged victims, which is not questioned or challenged, as if they were rape victims or similar. That's bizarre. They aren't rape victims. They work in an industry which is not only gay friendly, but populated disproportionately by gay men.
The behaviors described indeed seem like workplace harassment, but it should be remembered that they were not his employees, nor his subordinates. Whether he was a cad or crude or not, that's not the same as an employee in fear of losing his job when outing the boss as a perv. It's just not.
And plenty of gay men are attracted to young men, and there is no magic line that appears when someone hits 21 or 18. It shouldn't be portrayed as pedophilia nor should straight men who are attracted to girls of the same age. It's biology. We observe societal norms to uphold other values, but pretending young post-adolescent bodies are not sexually appealing to the majority of men is rank hypocrisy.
And, although there may certainly be payoffs happenning behind the scenes, this Mitchell Garabedian case seems almost textbook in its appearance as an extortion attempt. He wasn't a minor when the incident took place, although maybe one in terms of alcohol consumption. His retraction of the civil suit looked like he'd been paid off, but the 5th amendment assertion in his criminal case seems quite the opposite, as if he were merely a gold digger hopping on the train before it left the station.
I'm not a fan nor a detractor of Kevin Spacey. I've liked the characters he has played, but have zero idea what the man is like. On the other hand, I've met over a dozen men from JUB in person and I've never gotten the impression from any of them that their backgrounds didn't include randy encounters, some of which may have later soured or even not been reciprocated or welcome. That is my impression of men in general, even when decent men, is that they bust a move sometime, and sometime they are wrong.
What about you? Is there an issue bigger than Spacey here? Is JUB being hypocritical by disowning him/it/the issue?
It feels like there is a sentiment to define gay encounters away from the behaviors that Spacey is accused of doing, but I seem to have met gays mostly who have done those behaviors, and heavy drinking was part of the scene. Is it a matter of evolution?
I found a good timeline of Spacey's apocalypse on the BBC site:

Details of the most recent criminal and civil suit involving Garabedian and his mother are here:
