Lady Gaga Discussion Thread

Re: Lady Gaga Discussion Thread - 2014 edition

It's always puzzling when selling over a million albums is considered a "flop". It was the same with Madonna's MDNA which sold less than most of her albums- something like 1.8 million units worldwide... but of course, both Madonna and Gaga set pretty high bars with previous (and much better) albums.

Especially in THIS day and age. In the 90's when things were going triple and quadruple platinum, sure... but these days if you go gold, it's a milestone that people are listening and buying.

I've noticed that a few of the industry sales figures include [legal] downloads as part of "sales".

Lady Gaga’s Charitable Foundation Donated Less Than One Percent Of Its Earnings In 2012

EXCLUSIVE Don’t get me wrong: I like Lady Gaga and her parents. But celebrities probably shouldn’t start charitable foundations. Now the latest federal tax report is in for Lady Gaga’s Born this Way Foundation, and it’s not good news. Despite spending $348,000 in 2012 on their outreach bus tour, the Born this Way Foundation otherwise managed to fritter away around $1.5 million on legal fees, publicity, and a website.
The foundation, which lists Gaga’s lovely mom, Cynthia Germanotta, as president, had a lot of expenses in 2012 that had nothing to do with helping anyone. They spent $300,000 on “Strategic Consulting (web, digital),” $62,836 on “Stage Productions (Harvard, LA, UN),” $50,000 on “Social Media,” and another almost $50,000 on “Event Coordination.”

What?

Born this Way also spent: $808,661 on “other”; $406,552 on “Legal”; $150,000 on “Philanthropic Consulting”; $60,000 on “research”; 58,768 on “Publicity fees”; $78,000 on “travel”. They spent $72,000 on salaries– presumably for running the Born this Way bus, although that episode had its own expense line.

Under ‘grants to organizations or individuals”: $ 5000. Five thousand dollars.

Well it's about time they caught up to the fact that the digital age is a real and viable thing, and CDs are going the way of the cassette tape.

FUSE
Ultimately, Gaga's attitude—equal parts preacher and confidante—was the real secret to her SXSW success. Without seeming pretentious or demanding, Gaga demanded her audience give up on cell phone pics.....Shockingly, most of the audience—who had completed a Doritos #BoldMission to gain access to the sought-after show—acquiesced. It's not often that a pop star can effectively command fans to keep the phones dormant, but Gaga isn't any pop star—she's one of the arty freak people she performs for and inspires. Except, ya know, she's ten times more talented than the rest of us.

BILLBOARD
(On Swine performance) For an album and tour inspired by performance art, it was the one moment where music and shock value merged indelibly and credibly.

THE DAILY BEAST
But the highlight of the night occurred two-thirds of the way into the show.... Gaga paused the rowdy proceedings to honor the victims, and deliver this speech...The pop star, fittingly, received her fair share of applause.

USA TODAY
Pop superstar Lady Gaga brought her theatrical musical road show to the South by Southwest music festival Thursday evening, rousing up a crowd that had made mini-sacrifices to see the star.......Alone at her keyboard, the performer showed off the range and strength of her voice and her keyboard talents in ways often lost in large stadium shows. The crowd swayed along to the tender lyrics — "My heart would break without you, might not awake without you" — then roared with approval."

"She's a trailblazer," said Hruby McHugh, 38, a Los Angeles entrepreneur enjoying the show. "I love the theatrics. She has a tremendous creative vision."

"...rousing rendition of Bad Romance that got the entire crowd waving their hands and jumping in unison to the beat."

"As the menagerie crammed onstage for the final tune, the fake vomit drying on instruments and the mechanical bull-pig resting nearby, it was clear Lady Gaga had done her part to keep Austin weird.

And then some.

ROLLING STONE
Alone with a keyboard, Gaga once again proved the foundation of her career is actually her songwriting, singing the powerful plea of an addict in love."

(On Swine performance) For the rest of the show, Gaga would have this black sheen, marking her as a metaphorical survivor of rape and an actual survivor of performance art.

....but it's hard to argue with her values: love your friends, live in the moment, be yourself, make kick-ass art. And the monologue that preceded her encore ("Gypsy") was genuinely moving, as she dedicated it to the victims of the hit-and-run killing that had marred SXSW the night before, just down the street. "We're all wandering the earth, trying to find each other," Gaga said. At that moment, the crowd felt like a community, not just a couple of thousand contest winners gathered at a BBQ stand.

GOSSIP CENTER

CONTACT MUSIC
Lady Gaga brought some serious 2008 nostalgia to her SXSW gig on Thursday night. Her show included highlights like fake vomit, a roasting spit and some good old-fashioned mechanical bull riding. It’s not cliché, it’s classic. If you’re wondering how it all ties together, imagine Gaga being wheeled out on a huge roasting spit, from which she sang her first song, Aura. Apparently this time it wasn’t some thinly veiled metaphor about celebrity culture, just a nod to Texas’ infamous BBQ culture.

MY SAN ANTONIO
Gaga delivered a 60-minute set that was provocative, weird and definitely one to remember.

But the show was at its best when Gaga was alone on the piano. Not the pig rotisserie or mechanical bull, just the piano. She belted her earnest lyrics on “Dope,” and it was a reminder of her immense talent that doesn’t need frills. Her encore began with her on piano for the first verse of “Gypsy” before exploding into a full-fledged dance party. The lasting impression of the show will likely be the vomit, since, well, it happened. But the night also was a reminder that Gaga’s voice is what made her an icon for so many of her Little Monsters.

DAILY STAR
But we think the singer has finally pulled off the most bonkers stage performance we have ever witnessed.....Classic Gaga, really.

Miley, start brainstorming – we think you have some competition in the bizarre performance arena

MTV
As many moments that were meant to titillate the audience throughout the show, there were just as many that simply inspired. Gaga took to the mic several times during the set, most notably before the performance of "Dope," and encouraged everyone to be themselves and reach for their dreams

ENTERTAINMENT WEEKLY
It was certainly a new brand of visual, and one that Gaga designed specifically for this special show.

You can’t accuse her of not knowing how to work a crowd, as she also re-arranged “Bad Romance” into a country-blues hybrid that featured some pretty mean fiddling.

It was hard to imagine what Lady Gaga would do on such a small stage, but she made it work.

The vomiting was, of course, the centerpiece.....'It was gross, to be sure, but it also felt new.

Before playing an extra-emotional version of “Gypsy” (whose refrain “I don’t wanna be alone forever” held extra resonance), she reminded the audience to be present and available and to make art whenever possible, because life is short and fleeting.

“When you die,” she told the crowd, urging them to remain engaged, “nobody is going to give a f— what you tweeted.” It was the ideal tone to strike in dealing with the senseless violence of the previous night. That’s why Gaga is a pro.

Petition Decries Lady Gaga's SXSW Performance for 'Glamorizing Bulimia'

Turns out Demi Lovato isn't the only one left feeling a little uneasy after Lady Gaga's South By Southwest performance last week, during which she was vomited on. A new petition has been enacted since calling for the pop star to stop, as it says, "glamorizing bulimia."

The petition, posted on Care2 and authored by Chris Wolverton, was created in light of March's Eating Disorder Awareness Week. "Pop star Lady Gaga once struggled with bulimia," the petition states, "but now she is glamorizing the eating disorder."

Re: Lady Gaga Discussion Thread - 2014 edition

I'm failing to see how her stupidity (excuse me, "edgy art") glamorizes bulimia.

If this was Steve-O, they'd have a REAL case, as the guy has been puking on command for years upon years.

Re: Lady Gaga Discussion Thread - 2014 edition

Love it. She looks amazing and I love the choreography...

Re: Lady Gaga Discussion Thread - 2014 edition

I felt some Poker Face and Bad Romance when I watched it. Some of her choreography reminded me of those two videos too.

Re: Lady Gaga Discussion Thread - 2014 edition

i just realized Gaga is the ONLY star to feature elaborate choreographed dance moves. I hope she doesn't stop, cause I miss that alot.

i like her.

Re: Lady Gaga Discussion Thread - 2014 edition

Miley Cyrus did it better with the Can't be Tamed video!

Am I misunderstanding the comment? Do you think Gaga is the first to have choreographed dance moves?

The rap that she did sounded like Bad Romance

I like Lady Gaga's song G.U.Y.

I dont follow Lady Gaga. Im not a monster, as it were.

I like the song. I think its catchy. Its better than J Lo's 'Papi' song lol.
Pia Zadora could bring a song out about how she conquered the Martians and it would probably be better than 'Papi'

From 3:40 to 7:15

At 3:48, guy on the left, Im convinced that that is the guy from Opposite Worlds (reality show)
