Re: Lady Gaga jumps the shark, models "space dress" gimmick

Performance art is one thing, meaningless publicity stunt, another:

The article: http://www.nydailynews.com/entertainment/lady-gaga-unveils-flying-dress-article-1.1512723

If ever there were a time for a "wardrobe malfunction" . . .

You are talking about her, so she won, and her publicity stun was not so useless after all!!!

Well she did mention that there will most likely be 2 volumes and that the first one will contain the more commercial songs.

Oh cool, I didn't know that.

I don't think any of the songs on the album sound particularly commercial though (I'm not saying that's a bad thing).

Some songs yeah but I can see G.U.Y., Gypsy, and Donatella being played on the radio. Maybe even Swine.

Re: Lady Gaga jumps the shark, models "space dress" gimmick

OK, I had to look up the phrase 'jump the shark'.

If you are using the phrase correctly [if there is a 'correct way' to use pop culture terms/slang :) ] then you might be right.

She's done for.

Re: Lady Gaga jumps the shark, models "space dress" gimmick

I think it's pretty cool. A bit silly and impractical, but interesting anyway.

Re: Lady Gaga jumps the shark, models "space dress" gimmick

It is guaranteed to wind up in an episode of The Simpsons or Southpark.

Wouldn't be surprised since these are 2 shows that ran their course, they'll need a hot topic to try and salvage some viewers.

Re: Lady Gaga jumps the shark, models "space dress" gimmick

Got your post comment. Thanks.

But, just for amusement, this is what I found on line.

The phrase derives from a scene in the three-part 'Hollywood' episode of the American TV series Happy Days, broadcast in September 1977. The scene has 'The Fonz' (Henry Winkler), water skiing - unaccountably still wearing his trademark leather jacket - and jumping over a shark.

The episode, which came at a time when the long-running series was already considered past its best, was seen as the a virtual admission by the programme's makers that the series had run its course and that they were deficient of ideas. The phrase has been adopted in the USA - although it is rarely heard elsewhere - an has become a stock item in TV critic's reviews whenever a show loses its way.
. . . .

My highlight, of course.

Re: Lady Gaga jumps the shark, models "space dress" gimmick

The reviews of it are coming in with my implications confirmed -- the lack of punch is the album is in evidence by the publicity overkill trying to compensate for it. It's just like the summer movie hype over some allegedly great studio release: you actually see the movie and go, "oh, they did it again.

The key is to get them to buy the ticket. They don't care if people like the movie. I remember a friend grumbling before he went off to see Saw VI. "This one better not suck like the last three did." But back he went.

The album has no depth, but at least it sounds OK as it spools out. I don't think she'll lose too many fans with it, but I can't picture her roping in any new ones either.

One of the weirdest moments on the album was a song that has blatant autotune all over it...but I still hear her stretch for the high notes. Which is sort of like buying concealer and putting it on your nipples under your shirt. Perhaps it's just Gaga being Gaga. :)

I am glad that ones opinion isn't final and people have different tastes. :)

Re: Lady Gaga jumps the shark, models "space dress" gimmick

The coolest thing about this alleged 'gimmick' is that her fashion 'haus' has a technology division that makes wickedly cool things like this dress. I wouldn't be surprised if she patented a lot of this shit and raked in a shit-load of money in the future, if they're ever used.

Re: Lady Gaga jumps the shark, models "space dress" gimmick

On further reflection, I'm trying to figure out why a woman who wore an outfit made of Kermit the Frogs, and a dress made of meat, would be considered "shark jumping" for wearing something that at least looks like it's from a sci-fi movie, and might have a practical function.
