Re: Should prostitution be illegal?

It is the oldest profession... Take from that what you will.

Re: Should prostitution be illegal?

If sex is legal, prostitution should be legal.
As simple as that.

If eating is legal, then cannibalism should be legal.

If boxing is legal, then wifebeating should be legal.

If driving is legal, road rage should be legal.

If music is legal, then supersubwoofers that shatter glass at midnight should be legal.

If speech is legal, then hate speech should be legal.

If owning animals as pets is legal, putting them to death when we tire of them should be legal.

Yes, I see how that works.

Re: Should prostitution be illegal?

Everything Politicians love, and want to keep for themselves, has to be illegal in some fashion.

Re: Should prostitution be illegal?

It should have always been legal.....

Re: Should prostitution be illegal?

It's legal here in Mexico, depending if the cops feel like forcefully making you bribe them to leave you alone. I have no opinion on the matter, I'm not a woman or a straight guy, so I shouldn't worry about the fact that vaginas are being sold.

Re: Should prostitution be illegal?

Yes, I think prostitution should be legal.

Re: Should prostitution be illegal?

I say no. If it is legalized, at least it can be regulated. I'm not saying everything will be perfect if it is legal. But at least rules and regulations can be put in place to protect those who provide the service and those who seek the service.

As I've previously posted, I was an escort for ten years, during college, grad school and while establishing myself professionally.

My experiences were largely good ones, often amazingly good ones, and I look back on those years with pleasure and not a little nostalgia. I was pretty open about it at the time, with both my partner and with more than a few friends, gay and straight. I'm less so these days, being older (late thirties) and "established". Very established. Over the years I've hooked up a few former clients--guys I'd happily have sex with even if no money were involved--but it's been very occasional.

Three or four months ago a buddy and onetime fellow whore whom I knew from my escorting years and who now keeps a small stable of guys serving a small group of clients asked me to help him out with a few of those clients--said I was the right guy for them. I was intrigued to get back in the game, but couldn't as I didn't have the time. However, over the past ten days my partner has been out of town on business, so I've given it a try. I've seen two men so far--great guys, great sex. I've got a repeat with one of them over the weekend, but that'll be it for a while as my partner is returning next week.

Which is all to say that of course I think prostitution should be legal, even though the illicit aspect adds a certain excitement for me. What I wouldn't be happy with is the regulation part. A lot of guys (most, I assume) would never get into the business were it regulated--which would be a loss for both prostitute and client. Many of my fellow escorts were other college students, or trainers or aspiring actors, etc. Other professionals out for adventure and an extra buck. A few were even in the police academy. None of us would be happy with a paper trail.

Make it legal, but forget the regulations.

Illustrating faulty syllogisms isn't an example of instability.

Instability looks more like obvious trolling:

Re: Should prostitution be illegal?

A familiar slogan for another cause says that a woman should have control over her own body, I don't think it would be too great of a leap to use the same mantra for the right to sell it for sex. To avoid discrimination a young man (no one wants to pay for an oldie) should have this right as well.

I suppose that we could move from sex to other services, anyone want to buy/sell a kidney? It's wonderful to donate but don't go capitalist and sell a lobe of your liver to the highest bidder.

Is there a down side to prostitution? (no pun intended), perhaps.
Do we want boys and girls sitting in Jr. high school or high school not applying themselves because they plan on becoming a pleasure provider when they hit 18?

Re: Should prostitution be illegal?

You know he probably did that on an elevator before.. when he was by himself.

Of course, it's possible for the law to be against any act of the individual, not based on morality but on cost to the state. Although one could argue that prostitution costs society in various ways, we know that fossil fuel use and alcohol consumption both have widespread costs to our economy, yet we carefully avoid making those industries pay for their impacts.

So, that pretty much returns the discussion to morality, and as such, there isn't any more compelling argument to be made against prostitution than there is drinking alcohol or wasting gasoline by cruising around Friday nights aimlessly in a car.

Then there is the whole question of regulation. Most assume that would be all about controlling STDs, but the reality is that it would be about taxation. Is it fair for a whore to be able to make thousands a month untaxed while the guy at the Wendy's is paying his fair share on a minimum wage job of only hundreds? Short answer: no. Both use police, fire, street, garbage, and other civic services that all should bear the costs for.

Many gainfully employed persons, sole proprietors and independent contractors, pay Social Security, Federal, State and local taxes using their SS number as a tax ID. I believe many small businesses are so constituted, and I am unaware of any move to register them. A whore could as easily and legitimately file tax returns as does an architect who is a sole practitioner; I assume that many full-time masseurs file returns and state their occupation as "masseur", which is what a savvy rent-boy would do.

There are long and short term financial advantages to a money trail that lead people to file tax returns. Besides, the tax code in the US is so steeply progressive that (I understand) other than Social Security and sales taxes, almost half of the country doesn't pay taxes--and the Wendy's employee is in that category. (Hence Mitt Romney's notorious 47% reference.)

Local services (police, fire, street, etc.) are largely paid for by property and sales taxes. A whore would be paying for those services through his rent and every time he purchased a taxable item.

When prostitution is legalized/decriminalized it basically completely legalizes sex trafficking, and women, men, and kids get hurt and forced into being prostitutes even more...so no I do not think it should be legal or decriminalized.
