Escorting, which is legal in the US, is a form companionship or "friendship". Meaning you go out to a restaurant or the club, etc. and that's it. Prostitution involves the exchange of money for sexual favors, which in the US (except for a small part of Nevada) is illegal. So escorting is legal as long as there is no exchange of money for sex.

Now there are legal ways around the prostitution label thanks to porn. Porn stars are paid to act and prostitutes are paid for sex. Therefore performers may engage in sex as part of their roles, but that does not count as sex for hire. Of course this all depends on how the law and the first amendment are interpreted.

Here in Ireland as far as I know (not a legal expert lol) it is legal as long as you don't solicit on the street. As long as you do it online or over phone is fine. (I think. Never worked as or paid for prostitute, so I could be talking out of my arse.)
