Lex's 365 Forgotten Retro Songs for 2010

'K. :) Here's a weird one I happened to be listening to yesterday. It was the b-side of "Shock the Monkey".

Day 74 - "Soft Dog" - Peter Gabriel

Lex

I probably should've started with this one.

Day 75 - "99% of Gargoyles Look Like Bob Todd" - Half Man Half Biscuit

Lex

One I always liked...and I'll make it a 'triple':

Ram Jam - Black Betty:

Mind you, when Kram & Spiderbait decided to do their take on it in 2004...
they made Ram Jam sound quite a bit dated. Kram rocks! (Good videoclip too :D):

If you want to hear it more like it would originally have sounded...
The magic of Leadbelly:

^ Weird. While out to dinner last night, we were interested in a few of the desserts. I asked the server (well, bartender, actually) what she thought of the brown betty, and she said "Ram a lam a lam." Seriously. :)

I picked up this LP yesterday, and enjoyed the entire thing today. :)

Day 78 - "Babe" - Jack Green

Lex

Oops. Apologies on busting in on this again so quickly - but just tonight - something brought back memories and made me want to post it straightaway...

Yazoo (think they were known as Yazz in the US?).
Tho' this is 80's electro pop - Alison Moyet had one of the most sensational voices going.

Yazoo - Don't Go:

I'll double up on this one too - if only to mention that I saw her live, when she was at the height of her solo career, in the mid/late '80's. Given that she was a rather...errm...large lady - I thought she would just just 'sashay gently' around the stage. Not so. She absolutely rocked! Dancing all over the stage - lots of energy - one of the best concerts I saw. Strange in a way that the highlight for me was a very 'non rock' track I don't recall her ever having put out on an album. From recollection (it was a long time ago, so I could be wrong) she sang it totally a capella. This YouTube is of a live performance with low key accompaniment. Regardless - it was flawless - one of those magical performances that sent shivers down my spine.

Hope you enjoy...
Alison Moyet - Ne Me Quitte Pas

In the US, Yazoo was known as "Yaz". There was another band that was known as Yazz.

Yaz(oo) was one of Vince Clarke's projects. First Depeche Mode, then Yaz, then the Assembly (for one whole single), and then Erasure. The man's a busy guy. :) He did have a talent for finding good singers, though. Alison Moyet and Andy Bell both have great pipes.

And since I've brought them up...

Day 79 - "Never Never" - The Assembly

Lex

Day 81 - "Up the Down Escalator (There Must Be Something Wrong, Boys)" - Chameleons (UK)

Lex

Day 82 - "No Guilt" - Waitresses

As performed by a woman and a puppet. Not sure why, but I thought it was cute.

After spending more time than I care to admit chatting about this guy with a relative last night...what the hell.

Day 83 - "Alyson" - Rick Springfield

Lex

Decided it is time for me to pitch in again - a real old one this time (Lex - tell me to 'butt out' if this is going too far back). I guess my idea of retro goes back a little further than Lex's, LOL.

Apologies if this was/still is well known in the USA - but where I grew up, it was a 'one off' - and pretty obtuse, at that...

'Woolly Bully" ;)

(shame that the person who posted this can't spell 'Pharaohs')...

>>>Apologies if this was/still is well known in the USA - but where I grew up, it was a 'one off' - and pretty obtuse, at that...

Billboard ranked it the #1 single of 1965 in America. You don't get much more non-obtuse than that. It's still played on oldies stations across the country (along with their only-slightly-less-popular follow-up hit "Little Red Riding Hood"), and at those lacrosse games I'm so fond of, they play it for the mascot to dance to. (Why? His name is Wooly.)

That's OK - still love you, Tribs. :)

But since I'm talking to an Australian about 60s music...here's the one thing that stunned me. The Supremes put out a plethora of fantastic music throughout the decade. They had ten number one singles, a ton of other hits, and several of their songs remain stone-cold classics to this day.

In Australia, they only had one song sneak past number 38. Which one? "The Happening", the pedestrian theme song to a forgotten movie, which peaked at number two.

What is WRONG with you people? :D

Day 85 - "Supremes Medley" - Stars on 45
