BotM had an odd genesis. Roger Miller from the band Mission of Burma developed a severe case of tinnitus, and was told that he had to stop playing loud rock music or face going deaf entirely. So he scuttled Mission of Burma and formed Birdsongs instead, which might be termed "chamber pop". The music can be dischordant and weird, but it's well-suited for small venues (they often played museums and whatnot). Roger has since reformed Mission of Burma (and put out three more fantastic albums!), and now plays live wearing the same ear protection used at gun ranges. Apparently, that's enough to protect his ears.
