London Olympics 2012

Re: Todays the Day! 2012 London Summer Olympics!

^ Yes NBC has been sucking lately with their reporting. I still love me some Bob Costas (hard to hate the guy). I can tolerate Matt Lauer and Brian Williams. Since when did they let that rat Ryan Seacrest and horned up Meredith Viera on?

One reason NBC usually gets the gig is they have a host of channels to broadcast on: NBC (network), MSNBC (cable "news"), CNBC (business "news"), Bravo ("gay" network), NBC Sports and Univision (Spanish network). Course there is live streaming for team USA coverage on NBC.com too and I believe it is free: not sure if you have to login with some BS cable-affiliated email address like others.

Re: Todays the Day! 2012 London Summer Olympics!

I try to mentally "tune out" Matt Lauer, Bob Costas, whoever is babbling along with the ceremonies. It was horribly distracting during the Beijing opening ceremony (which, at the expense of my safety on this forum, I think was a bit better than the ceremony tonight). But the inane commentary kind of ruins it... I'm just sort of not listening to them any more, as if they were some other people in the room that I have tuned out. Ryan Seacrest at the Olympics? Tonight he asked a young gymnast what she thinks of her "underdog status" or something. Tacky question Ryan. Ask more meaningful questions. And when did Meredith Viera jump from ABC to NBC? I missed that. I can't believe I sat through 4.5 hours of it tonight... though I ignored a lot of the parade of nations. Paul McCartney was the most spirited person in the building!

Re: Todays the Day! 2012 London Summer Olympics!

Surprised to see black gymnasts to make the USA team.
GO USA! :)

Re: Todays the Day! 2012 London Summer Olympics!

Worth waking up 5.30am to watch the ceremony, it is so amazing! I love the Queen part, Mr.Bean and the passing torch to the young. Australia broadcast was a bit off. They keep showing the Aussies dancing around the field.

A good friend of mine (and he's passionately English) described the cauldron lighting as good but Paul McCartney as 'awful'.

I really don't watch Opening Ceremonies - but that bit was replayed on TV here not long ago. He was off key and I think it was rather sad. From what I heard on the overall impression of the total package of the Ceremony most people did seem to like it tho' (Mr Bean got some positive comments - might have to try and find that bit at some stage).

USA Olympian Gabrielle Douglas is a young Force of Nature ready to wow the judges this year....

Handsome 19yr old USA Olympian John Orozco is the one to watch this-go-round...He has a great back-story.....

Black USA Olympians are REPRESENTING in the Water, on the Mat, On the Track, on the Courts and everywhere else...So don't be surprised...

The Good-looking Rob Simmelkjaer is Co-Anchoring MSNBC coverage of the Games this year a FIRST for a Black Anchor....

Re: Todays the Day! 2012 London Summer Olympics!

I have to say that I found most of the first part of the opening ceremony moderately tedious and I dozed off altogether when the various teams started entering the stadium. I think I remained conscious until about G.

My favourite part of what I saw was this:

A good friend of mine (and he's passionately English) described the cauldron lighting as good but Paul McCartney as 'awful'.

McCartney was dreadful at The Queen's Jubilee concert too. I don't know why they keep asking him.

Mr Bean got some positive comments - might have to try and find that bit at some stage.

Here it is:

Re: Todays the Day! 2012 London Summer Olympics!

Great opening ceremony. Great that the Queen got involved.

Re: Todays the Day! 2012 London Summer Olympics!

The Queen & Bond scene was hilarious!

I thought the themes of children, "the next generation" and "passing the torch" were very powerful. The young people taking turns carrying the torch around the stadium, then lighting the Olympic flame was a really nice touch.

Where were Wallace & Gromit?

Too much scenery/set going on. All that sod being removed was exhausting and distracting to watch.

Dreary smoke stacks with (a sulfur odor the whole stadium could smell) wtf? who wants to smell rotten eggs? The messy map of London streets on the floor just added to the confusion. It just looked like white scratches all over the place. I guess that's what the map is supposed to look like, though.

The kids dancing on hospital beds and nurses twirling around was totally ridiculous and unsettling. I didn't like that at all.

Paul McCartney is old. I'm not going to fault him for being old.

The rings coming together over head and the shower of sparks was well done. I liked the lighting in the stadium seating as well.

The torch is unique and spectacular. Having one arrive on a speed boat was fun. I still don't know how these things stay lit with all the wind.

Mr. Bean, well, you either get him or you don't and I've always enjoyed his quirky mime routines.

Re: Todays the Day! 2012 London Summer Olympics!

Well I didn't get to see one of the events that mattered most to me. I got up at 5:30 am (just after the start) To catch some of the Mens Road Cycling. Low and behold CTV (our wonderful Olympic broadcaster) blacked out the event online claiming "technical difficulties".

TSN covered it in full. I watched it.

Enjoyed parts of the opening ceremony. Mainly the raising of the British flag while the kids sang the anthem and the parade of nations.

From here in Kentucky, it's on about 6 or 7 channels. I keep flipping back and forth. Watching Team USA vs Team Italy in the men's archery final right now. Was watching Team USA vs Team Colombia in women's soccer (football, for you Europeans.)

Looking forward to the track and field events and the gymnastics. I'm gonna marry John Orozco. :) Also rooting for Tyson Gay, the American track star. He and I are from the same city in Kentucky. Aside from cheering for Team USA, I'll also be rooting for Team GB, Team Canada, Team Egypt, Team Greece, amongst others.

I love the Olympics. I love the brotherhood it brings out in people. The sense of unity and the senses of pride and patriotism it ignites in people all over the world. I love competitiveness and athletics. Very excited for the next couple of weeks!

Thx ULOM - I'll have to keep looking tho' - that YouTube shows as 'Removed by user" :(

Re: Todays the Day! 2012 London Summer Olympics!

Go Britain!

I only ever watch the Opening Ceremony and the Closing Ceremony but last night's opening was amazing! Rowan Atkinson is such a cool guy.

Re: Todays the Day! 2012 London Summer Olympics!

The opening ceremonies were GREAT! I got to watch it on my 110" projection setup. Got a new projector just in time for the media room.

The Bond skid and Mr. Bean was funny! Great to see. The passing of the torch to the young athletes was really great! Bet they'll never forget this moment. Finally, the 204 torches coming together into the olympic cauldron was a masterpiece! A true symbol of all nations coming together. I don't think anyone has ever done this before.

Bravo!!!

Every time I watch the Olympics it has a special place in my heart. I was lucky enough to work the 84 Olympics in Los Angeles. I was 20yo. It was THE best time I have ever had. I'd do it again in a heartbeat!

I love the comedy "these countries i used to own" LOL

Re: Todays the Day! 2012 London Summer Olympics!

OK, what were the nightlights?
I have not had the opportunity to watch.

Re: The London Olympics Opening Ceremony

I liked it and thought the tribute to the National Health Service was great.

Sadly Americans will never understand what that is.

Re: The London Olympics Opening Ceremony

The London opening Ceremony should be about "fun and comedy".

If people want to know about history and Industrial Revolution, they should look at history books.
Without watching it, maybe its a boring ceremony ?
