As a footnote, the extreme and public grief of the Chinese families is at direct odds with the oft-held Western assertion that the overpopulation of China makes life cheap there.

We can see from the placards, buses to organized demonstrations, banners, t-shirts, and provoked remonstrances that this grief is manufactured and facilitated by the Chinese government. It is wholesale, not retail, grief. There may be grief at the core but the televised wailing is for the international public's consumption.

Sustained but intermittent pings are now being acquired by surface vessels. The pings appear to come from two sources, which could be the black box and the cockpit voice recorder.

In what may be one of the most promising leads yet in the search for the missing flight, the head of the Australian joint agency co-ordination centre, Angus Houston, announced on Monday that the Australian defence vessel Ocean Shield detected two separate signals within the northern part of the search area.

The first detection lasted two hours and 20 minutes, and the second lasted 13 minutes. The vessel is continuing to monitor the area to relocate the signal.

It's been almost two weeks since I read that vessels were going to be picking up debris to verify if it was fro the plane -- what's become of that angle?

I read that the frequency of these pings is supposedly not going to be produced by any animals living in the ocean. It seems like with that in mind, and the fact that they have two source emitting this sound, that they have found the plane. What else could it be? I wonder how easy it will be to pinpoint the location of either device with the sound traveling through water and how long it will be before they're sending equipment underwater to search for visuals.

All such electronics have variable sensitivity such that they can be oversensitive. It is indeed possible to get a false reading, or a signal from some other source. Signals have been detected in three places hundreds of miles apart. Two or all of them are wrong. I seriously doubt the crude hand held methods that the Chinese are using will detect the pings, but if they do it would be like winning the lottery.

Of course the objects need to float for a time for that to happen, and then eventually sink. I just don't see that being the case for data recorders.

Televised wailing has precipitated the Chinese government to pay for two chartered flights and five ships to bring nearly 3000 people, many of them injured, home.

Am I right in thinking that despite all of the efforts made, nothing has been found? None of the flotsam and jetsam pulled out of the Indian Ocean has been shown to be from the plane and the "pings" which were supposedly detected in the water are not now thought to have been from its black box.

This is based on the BBC Horizon documentary which aired tonight over here, in fact I've just watched it on TV, it was just on two hours ago.

The new position seems to be based on computer-modeling and a lot of number-crunching of data by Inmarsat, based on their satellite which was the one receiving these so-called 'handshakes' or 'ping' signals. I can't say whether their conclusions are more reliable or not, but the documentary clearly inferred that they were.

One thing I DID newly learn was the real source of these 'air corridors' I heard so much about - the 24-hour news channels did a piss poor job explaining them - simply stating that the plane MUST have gone in a north or south corridor arc. Last time I checked, there isn't an invisible barrier in the sky forcing planes into only two exact directions.

In fact, these routes poorly-described in the news as 'air corridors' are in fact the outer edges of a circle with a set radius of thousands of miles, and centred on the Inmarsat satellite in orbit above the central Indian Ocean. The final satellite data 'pings' from flight MH370 showed only its distance from the satellite, but not its location. The arcs are therefore just the parts of the circle that the plane could have reached on its available fuel. I never actually knew all this before watching the programme.

You must have been listening to some pretty crappy reporting if you didn't get that. Even the local Fox station here showed how that worked.


edit: I'd like to watch that. Does it perchance explain why there was only one satellite tracking them? That always seemed silly to me (though maybe that comes from having family who are engineers who believe that "triple redundancy" isn't sufficient to be considered safe [one worked at the Hanford nuke plant, and his job was increasing the redundancy of safety systems]).
