Hello I heard two white Hispanics marco rubio and Ted Cruz have entered the race to potentially be the Republican presidential candidate. I have read Rubio has the better shot of getting the nomination than Cruz. Cruz is Canadian but since one of his parents is American born he is not disqualified. The American media have talked about Cruz and Rubio being hispanic but ignoring they are also white. I have heard from the Hispanic people who are of color their experiences are different than people like rubio and Cruz. I have a few questions, are the white Hispanics like rubio and cruz really in touch with the issues in their community? Does anyone know if some white Hispanics just pass and are not really concerned with hispanic issues since they are Of the majority and mainstream . In the early 20th century irish people, Jewish people, Italians, and people from Spain were not considered white. Now they become white. Just wondering if americans can answer if white Hispanics like rubio and Cruz are embraced or seen as white in america?

I doubt if any one can tell you how most Americans think about that. I genuine believe it will not be important, but their positions on immigration will be important. For many Americans, limiting immigration is an important issue. A Hispanic Republican candidate favoring large scale immigration will lose many votes and probably the nomination. Democrats on this thread think all Hispanics are brown. In any discussion of immigrants, the democrats invariably babel about the brown people. republicans never do.

Consider some facts, rather than right wing talking points....

More than 9% of eligible voters nationwide are Latino. The majority support for Democratic candidates continues a pattern among Hispanic voters. In a December 2011, 67% of Hispanics said they were Democrats, and 20% said they were Republicans.
In the 2010 midterm elections, 60% of Hispanics voted Democratic, while 38% voted Republican. In 2008, 67% of Hispanics voted for Democratic presidential candidate Barack Obama, while 31% of Hispanics voted for Republican presidential candidate John McCain. In 2006, 69% of Latino voters supported Democratic candidates in congressional races, while 30% supported Republican candidates.

Anyone running for national office can really only have one community - the one that includes everyone.

The republicans sure like to play the race card.

I don't see how they possibly could be. The republican platform is one of racism, not because all people are afraid of other races but because its politically advantageous to exploit Americans fears about immigration. They are the worst representatives of their communities because they are just as bad as the dictators that their families fled from.

Does anyone know if some white Hispanics just pass and are not really concerned with Hispanic issues since they are Of the majority and mainstream .

yes thats exactly right. they have to invent new ways of getting latino votes, usually by trickery, instead of facing the fact they are republicans whos party wants to deport all hispanics. latinos are a vulnerable group like any other minority, and are not up to speed about how politicians will use and abuse their so called "cultural credentials" of also being hispanic. in fact things are probably worse for latinos because of Cruz and Rubio.

In the early 20th century irish people, Jewish people, Italians, and people from Spain were not considered white. Now they become white. Just wondering if americans can answer if white Hispanics like rubio and Cruz are embraced or seen as white in america?

the establishment sees them as white americans only if they can do the bidding of their corporate masters. race is not the issue, hispanic acceptance is not the issue. the issue is their endorsing of their party and what it stands for, the issue of being in the senate and not championing Hispanic issues or equality issues. being against all minorities for the 1%. i see them more as wanna-be wealthy Americans who are part of the problem for all Americans and the reason so many have fled to this country.

you do not come to America then promise to make things better by refusing to see how they got this bad. joining the establishment does not a social justice warrior make.

No, the democrats have made it their number one strategy. Notice the dems on this thread accusing Republicans of racism. THAT is playing the race card, and it has worked.

No one ever doubted that the Irish are white. This is the kind of nonsense lies Republicans have to contend with. It is a new low, even for evanrick,

^MorrisseyX made the original assertion that the Irish were not considered white..in the early twentieth century...with J. F. Kennedy a fine example of a Democrat Party POTUS, of Irish extraction who disproved all the allegations levelled against him, by Republicans for being Catholic...

You would not be able to find one of those alleged Republican comments about his being a Catholic. A classic democrat lie. Comparable to the democrat lie that Republicans oppose Obama because he is black

I see Ben took an extra delusion pill this morning. Must be a stressful day up there on Planet Conservabot. Perhaps he hasn't hit his quota yet.

Ted Cruz is not loved by Latinos in Texas. Full stop.

I was sitting around the table at my Grandpa's house at Easter listening to some of my redneck relatives bitch about Cruz. They call him "that Mexican," now they know perfectly well he's the spawn of Canuk of the North, it's just that they's all Mex'cans. These people are the reactionary Baptist bagger types Cruz is trying to woo, and the funniest thing said was, "that Mex'can thinks he's a white man."

You are confusing. As far as I know Hispanic is not a race. Their are white and black people and those are different races. Just like there are Asians who are American and their cultural experiences will likely be different than Caucasian or black Americans. But all are Americans.
The language in Brazil is Portuguese while the rest of South American is not but all Latino or Hispanic, ? If you are from Portugal or Spain you are European but may look Hispanic however culture is not race, nor religion too.
I have known many Hispanic people with blue eyes or even blonde hair. How does race always get thrown in?
Wouldn't it be more on point that these so called candidates are not typical of the cultural they pretend to represent baiting for votes?

You can't be that naive. The 'pubbie pack will boil this issue down to it's lowest common denominator for the racist right, and use the bigoted base to crucify both of them.

The press will NOT be running nuanced and sensitive stories on the great diversity of "Hispanic," they will be running pieces on how the two Cubans are shafting Latinos.

Which tells you something about the actual state of "White Hispanics" in America, they MAY be "White" in Brazil, but they a'int White 'round here.

Your anti Catholic diatribes here is the proof that Republicans are prepared to dig up old campaign strategies, reaching back to Kennedy's time...to demonise candidates who do not fit the WASP profile....while recognizing that Hilary is a WASP and this also makes her highly electable...even among Republicans...her husband, Bill is also of part Irish extraction, Protestant, and very, very white skinned....

Noteworthy, common sense....

You need to learn to differentiate between policies and people. My objection is to the pro immigration, anti American policy of the church and to the candidates who blindly follow it.

I need spectacles.....they enable me to read your well rehearsed anti Catholic bias, without fearing that I have misunderstood you.

According to published information some 22 United States presidents were of Irish, or part Irish extraction...leading me to question the veracity of the above assertion.

Order "How the Irish Became White" - can't remember the author myself but it should pop up in google fairly quickly.

-race is more than observable skin color, it includes....a lot of things. Life; it's fuckin' messy.
