What an insightful post... It's one of about four total in this thread. I must ask here what SomethingBlue has stated and TheBled asked... What does her weight have to do with being a hypocrite?

Absolutely nothing --- what does being gay have to do with being an audience member? If she can take a swipe at the gay community just for being gay, I feel no remorse in taking cheap shots at her. Actually, I had never heard of her prior to this thread since I wouldn't be caught dead watching that inane program.

This by no means reflects a general attitude on larger people. My mother is quite overweight. I don't love her any less and I never make fun of her because of it. I have several friends who are a little on the chunky side. Hell, I'm overweight myself.

So to anyone on these boards who is a plus size and has taken offense at the attack on Mandisa, understand that it was a personal attack against her and her alone, just venting some frustration since A) we'd probably never get to tell her to her face what a hypocrite she is and B) it wouldn't make any difference if we could, since people like that are so resolute in their blind hatred anyway.

Back to brass tax. Mandisa is a non-celebrity who takes herself far too seriously. Who cares about her? The only reason anybody has even heard of her is American Idol and face it: no contestant on AI will be remembered five years from now (and that includes Kelly Whatsername.)

Now Mandisa (what kind of name is Mandisa anyway?) makes some offensive, bigoted remarks and says she gets sanction for her behaviour from her understanding of religion.

You know, it's this cherrypicking from the bible that drives me crazy. Mandisa claims to follow some parts of the bible religiously but obviously neglects others. (The bible also bans wearing clothing of mixed fibres - also Leviticus - but judging from that outfit that doesn't seem to worry her.) That opens her up to charges of hypocrisy and she's fair game. And if some of these posts have been extreme (albeit funny), well the bitch deserves it. Screw her.

As if I would.

And as for NowVoyageur, never heard of it except as the name of a fine Bette Davis weepie that everyone should see.

It's what I like to call the "Shallow Hal Effect." Some sort of hocus pocus causes people's inner beauty to be seens as outer beauty.... Okay, so a fat girl with a good heart is seen as skinny. So a skinny mean girl would be seen as fat? Because fat is synonymous with bad?

Forgive me because I'm fairly new. I understand there may be some animosity between Pharoah and SoilWork. That’s fine and dandy. Don't get me wrong, I enjoy other’s drama. But do you think this is the place to air your dirty laundry? I'm not taking sides, just pointing out this thread started with a fat anti-gay tart. Now it has started a sparring match.

It seems a though both have pushed some buttons. Agree do disagree (cliché I know) and move on; the world continues to turn.

Okay I am not an American Idol fan. For the record I have never watched one episode. Not bashing it, mind you. Just not my cup of tea. So I am niether pro-Mandisa nor anti-Mandisa from the get go. But I really think this is not that big of a deal. I mean yes I believe that she would probably opposed to gay marriage and not necessarily gay-friendly but she is not the anti-gay zealot that everyone is making her out to be. And I am not a self-hating gay man. If she actually said something clearly anti-gay like "fags are all going to hell" then I would be all over her. But she didn't. Why don't we reserve our venom for people who actually clearly and overtly insult us. I mean lord knows there are enough of those people out there.

And about the weight thing: give it a rest. We are gay men. By ridiculing a woman for her weight and appearance we are becoming the same asshole straight men who call us faggots. Had she been an overweight man, criticism of her would have weight would have been sparse and it would have been focused on what she said rather than her appearance. I mean for Christ's sake Jerry Falwell, who is awful to gays and lesbians (certainly far, far worse than Mandisa could ever dream of being), has a considerable weight problem and yet I don't here gay men going on and on about how fat he is. Where are the threads devoted to his obesity?

If you want to criticise Mandisa as a performer and contestant on American Idol then judge her on her singing ability. If you want to criticise her for her position on gay rights then judge her based on what she has said on the topic (which is very little). Her weight is irrelevant. Some have said that they would not usually insult a person's weight but Mandisa's percieved disrespect to gays makes it okay. Well I (and I hope all of you too) oppose racism in all its forms and would never consider it acceptable to insult someone with racial slurs. But under this logic, does my belief that Mandisa may be anti-gay make it okay to use the N word as an insult to her?
