This whole incident could have been avoided if the guys in the balconey had kept their mouths shut and just let him do his act, however good or bad it was... It's unfortunate that the video doesn't show what was happening prior to this, because all we get to see is his outburst...

Maybe the owner of the club could do a better service for everyone, the comedians and the club patrons, by ejecting hecklers.

comedians who can't deal with hecklers have no business being on stage. it comes with the job...especially when you're not funny like this idiot. just curious...do you also think women who are raped were asking for it if they were wearing mini-skirts? richards could have told them to fuck off without getting racial...by the way, all they said to him, repeatedly, was that he wasn't funny. they didn't start the racial name calling.

Doesn't matter! Those words flew out of his mouth too easily, he has said them before. If I was in that same situation, those things would have never come out of my mouth.

Comedians deal with hecklers all the time, there are ways to handle some brickbats thrown from the audience without erupting like a volcano.he may not think he's racist....but he's certainly had racial feelings to come across so ugly like this.He completely fucked up a situation that more self-assured,savvy comedians could turn to their advantage.Sad if it destroys his already stuck in the mud career,but he only has himself to blame.

Richards is suffering the "Gilligan" syndrome ... he is typecast as Kramer forever and no matter what else he does with his career he will always be Kramer -- that is the danger of being such a standout character. Some of that bitterness is coming out in this comedy routine, and unfortunately black folks fell victim to it. It was ugly and I would have walked out along with everyone else. I am not black and would not identify with being called the N word - but I am Latino and know the similar feeling with the S-word. Yeah, I would think he just threw away what was left of his dwindling career!

I agree with those who aren't buying the "I'm not racist!" plea. He's been in the entertainment industry for 25 years, he gets heckled by a couple of houligans during a stand-up routine, and the first thing that comes out of his mouth is "You would have been lynched 50 years ago"? Geez. That's not some irreverent sense of humor, that's just pure hate and ignorance. And the fact that he repeatedly used the phrase "Afro-American" during his public apology -- if you can call it that, since he's obviously only sorry that he got caught -- shows how completely out of touch he is.

Let's review:

He got one MILLION $ per episode for both season 7 and 8...

That, combined with the syndication residuals, plus the royalties from the
*very* popular DVD sales...

In short, the guy is SET for life.

The fact the he's still performing at a comedy club like 'The Laugh Factory'
indicates that he is addicted to the 'fame', having enough money.

If I had to guess, he was either drunk or on 'Lord knows what' when he went
off on his 'tirade'.

If this was 1980, it prolly would have died, but these days, when everything is on video and subjected to Internet coverage....

Money, good looks, external markers don't define character, and this is an issue of character.

Uh, no. "Crossing the line" would be if he cursed at the guy and told him to get out of the club. He told the guy that he should be killed for being black, which is so far past the line that he can't even see the line. The line is a dot to him. (TM "Friends") Then again, I'm not surprised that you're defending him since you think effeminate gay men should be physically assaulted. But that's off-topic.
