Michael Sam Discussion Thread [MERGED]

Re: First GAY NFL draftee Michael Sam CUT by St. Louis RAMs

1.SEC West coast player of the year. (This is one of the highest awards you can get in college football)
College achievements are irrelevant at the professional level. Plenty of college all stars have fallen flat in the NFL.

2.Arthur Ashe award (Another accolade given to very few)
Totally and completely irrelevant.

3.Sacked the number one rookie of the 2014 nfl season
Right, because NFL teams make their roster decisions based on one play in the preseason

4.Was drafted to one of the worst teams of the nfl even though their west coast.
Overall team skill is not a relevant factor, what is relevant is the skill of the other players competing for the same position.

So yes he was cut because he was black and gay
No he wasn't. And as another poster already pointed out, the fact that you seriously posited a player being dropped because he was black shows that you don't know the first thing about the NFL.

Was his sexuality---if u go by the numbers most experts I saw said he was safe. A female sports reporter this week-- I think for ESPN reported Sam didn't shower with his team because he didn't want them to be "uncomfortable"---he waited to shower when everyone was done. She got slammed for the story and everyone denied it was true. But this sort of homophobia many felt would never end and be a distraction for the team---which is why I think no one wanted to deal with it.

Nope, they said he had a shot, not that he was safe.

The one's I saw and read said safe--I don't know enough about it or care to give a shit--that's not my point---my point was because of homophobia lot's of endless non-related football stories were bound to endlessly pop up and be a distraction.

You guys have a quote fetish for some reason.

I gave my points and they are valid.

And I've been a football fan since I was six, so fuck all y'all.

Then you read some blog post by an uninformed dude who had an opinion. he was never safe.

And people trying to make this about his sexuality when the facts clearly show it was not are making the gay community look like idiots.

dude, be honest. do you REALLY know what you're talking about? it's one thing to have an opinion about what you think. it's another thing to front like you know what you're talking about and acting like it's facts when other people are saying otherwise.

the people that are saying the things you're saying either don't watch football or are very uninformed where they never followed up on it. atlboi seems to know what he's talking about especially when there's others that are football fans and etc that have been saying the same exact thing.

No. the main point people seem to bring up, is what he did in college has nothing to do with the nfl.

when 90 percent of the fucking players in the nfl came from university or college.

At the end of the day the rams made a stupid decision removing him from their roster as all the merch, ticket sales are going down the shitter.

Damn..I was hoping to cheer him on. He still has a chance but it would have to be with a team that needs his skills.....

I am not really sure if being gay was a factor...I know they have to cut members of each team every year so for me it is impossible to guess if his sexuality was the issue but I tend to think not. Football teams want to win and if the gay player has what it takes I do believe they will accept him...and so will the fans. Hell...the 49ers dropped Alex Smith who was a winning QB to bring in a different kind of potential talent with Colin Kaepernick.....It seemed insane initially but Harbaugh saw the future potential and gambled.

It's just too hard to make the call...everyone who was in the draft has talent.....I hope another team can use him. Michael Sam will always be a hero to me...I love that he was brave and opened a door that everyone was afraid to open.

People will say this just a football decision BUT we live in a very prejudiced homophobic work.I feel bad for Michael Sam I know he is disappointed about not making the team.I hear the St Louis Rams are deep in talent. Sam was drafted too low he proved in pre season he can play in the NFL. If another NFL team does NOT choose Sam that will be the evidence of homophobia.

Yet again you prove that you know nothing about football. Having a guy on the team not because he is the best choice as a player but just for ticket sales is a terrible way to run a program.

Another thing I wanted to mention is that Sam also made a bad calculation (through no fault of his own really) by dropping weight before the preseason thinking that he might make the special teams squad where he would need to be lighter to have greater speed, but it ended up that he had to compete solely on his defensive line play (where size would have helped).

No it isn't. Let him at least play for a fucking season. No practice before game, not seen a legit player, practice squad shit.

You have two guys, equal talent. However one has lots of merchandise sales, reputation, who do you go with.

The same with job recruiting, who do you go with?

No it isn't.
Yes it is. They become a distraction and do not contribute positively to the teams chances at winning. Ultimately a winning team sells more tickets than any other factor.

You have two guys, equal talent
As I stated, this was not the case. The guy he lost out to (Westbrook) was more versatile and could play all the defensive line positions.

And I fail to see how a distraction is bad. Half these guys are gonna end up paralyzed from the waist down, suffer brain damage, all just for entertainment, so might as well get someone who has talent which this young man has, as well as a side fan base the franchise hasn't attached itself to before,

Football "fan" since you were 6, with no idea of how football works.

As it was mentioned, Sam was not equally talented with the rest of the roster - never was. His combine numbers showed that from the very start.

Him selling (his OWN) merch does not mean he's making money for THE TEAM(I remember, way back when, when football was a TEAM sport with some stand out STARS, not the other way around).

You should really quit while you're behind.

You should also realize he is the only one of us that's in the nfl that isn't on the DL, lying behind religion to cover sexuality, or the only one that had the bravery to be himself and overcome the homophobia in the NFL.

No he isn't a or b level. But I do think he's higher than a D based on the tidbits I seen on his Missouri State performance and preseason.

I don't give a shit about combine, lots of players do bad and it doesn't reflect their NFL career.

And what do you mean quit while I'm behind? I'm allowed to have my opinion thank you.

This is...unfortunate.

He'll land on his feet eventually though. One monkey don't stop no show.

The problem with today's homophobia is people who discriminate often times are smarter than leaving something like a paper trail for you to sue. I lose sleep at night not because of the homophobes that spew hate out of their mouths. I lose sleep because of the ones that pretend to be our friends before they burn us. The work place that burned me never left any trail for it to come back and bite them. They played 100% by the book and held me to impossible standards.
