There was Detroit(I think it was) that drafted him, and promptly dropped him before the season even began. Supposedly his presence on the team was a "distraction".

Was Sam dropped due to homophobia? Probably. Does it really matter if homophobia in sports forces gay men to get a real job, and possibly make a difference in the world? No.

I hope this works out for Sam no shame in playing in the cfl it is a professional football league. I hear Michael will get at least 100k or more the first season. The money is not nfl starter salary but he needs the pro experience. Also many usa football players like doug flutie, Warren moon have used the cfl as a way to get back into the nfl.

The lesson is don't come out until you get chosen on a team, get a good contract and play a few seasons so people know what your talents are in a game. For many people it is not a convincing argument that Sam was dumped because he came out because if his game was superb that argument would be obviously clear.

It depends there is still homophobia here. For instance the lesbian premier Kathleen Wynne wants to change sex education to include updated info. However a lot of conservative Christians, homophobic south asians and muslim people are claiming the sex education is gay propaganda. Parents have taken their kids out of school in protest.

This is an example of why "privilege theory" fantasy is so dangerous: Michael Sam is entitled to play football like anyone else. He was the first to come out in his career of any colour. Instead of celebrating him as a trailblazer shaking up a dinosaur sports culture for all people of any colour, people make wild assumptions about what "would have happened" if he were white. (who knows, because a black guy was the pioneer here but just for fun lets ignore that and tear him down along with his mysterious white entourage..)

No. Aaron Rodgers is an NFL player who is RUMORED to be homosexual. There are also black NFL players who are RUMORED to be homosexual, and nothing more happens to them.

When institutionalized, homophobia does not come with the perodic violent witch hunts of the streets, or even mass investigations into private lives followed by firings. The people who run those institutions don't have the energy for all that. Rumors always come with enough "plausible deniability" that they'll look the other way with held back laughter of disbelief visible on their faces. Closeted gays need to do something like kiss in public, or verbally state their homosexuality themselves before an institution is going to take the claim seriously.

Further, even if what you say is true, that the only reason Rodgers is tolerated is because of his proven talent, you have no evidence that the requirements are any different for blacks. Indeed, according to your own words in this thread, if Sam supposedly had just not mentioned his sexuality and proven his worth over a couple of seasons he would have been fine. Thing is, all this would have really meant is he should have followed the same path as Rodgers, who is white.
