The vaccine for mpox is a smallpox vaccine. There is enough vaccine for mpox high-risk groups. It's the younger people (who never received smallpox vaccines) and HIV positive people who were most affected. The US Government bought 5 million doses for the mpox outbreak but they have a stockpile of 100 million smallpox vaccines.

Last year, quite a few people lied about their risk profile in order to get their vaccine while there was a shortage.

The US discontinued giving childhood smallpox vaccinations in the early 1970s. It's unlikely you received it. You would be eligible for Jynneous if you want it. It's two injections, usually given under the skin of the forearm like a TB test.

We're starting to get data from the nearly 12 months of Mpox vaccinations in the US.

• Worldwide, there have been 87,545 reported cases. 30,422 (35%) of those cases were in the US. In the US, 42 deaths were reported.
• In yet another unacknowledged response, the CDC and the US Government distributed and administered 1,222,510 doses. The full immunization is 2 doses, so that provided coverage to 611,255 people. The risk population in the US is about 4x that number, so we estimate that only about 23% of the people who are in high risk categories received the vaccine.
• The vaccine that was distributed is a smallpox vaccine made by JYNNEOS. The studies are saying it is about 88% effective in preventing cases. While not perfect, that is a good result since it was not known whether a smallpox vaccine would offer effective coverage against mpox.
• In the past month, Chicago has reported 13 cases of mpox. Of the 13 cases, 9 (69%)of the men had received the 2 doses of JYNNEOS. This is really bad timing because the International Men of Leather convention is this week... in Chicago. And of course, Pride events are in June.

If you are sexually active or plan to travel for Pride events, this would be a good time to get your mpox vaccination if you did not receive the two doses in the past year.
