On Topic Discussion Monkeypox Outbreak

Re: Monkeypox in London

Feels like 1980. This is pretty scary. Be careful if you are in London. I'm afraid this could get out of control very quickly.

What? :bartshock

Monkeypox virus is closely related to the virus that causes smallpox, smallpox vaccine should also protect people from getting monkeypox.

Re: Monkeypox in London

I meant it to be a reference to HIV. In that, so far, the London infection seems to have begun, and appears to be isolated to those having m2m sex. If not contained, this could easily spread through the gay community in a pattern similar to the way HIV spread starting around 1980. Thankfully, a vaccine already exists.

Why the fuck is it so hard for people to understand this is not about the actual seriousness of the disease. It's about that it is centered and spreading in the gay community in the same manner HIV did. It's about the potential for more discrimination and homophobic attacks over another "gay disease". Are none of you fuckers old enough to remember what it felt like in 1980?

Re: Monkeypox in London

Sometimes I envy people who are susceptible to fear mongering like these villain-of-the-week colds and illnesses. The environment a lot of us grew up in introduced us to real life goblins, we don't need the media cooking up imaginary ones. But, uh, masks back on? What are we doing?

Re: Monkeypox in London

No need for concern, monkeypox is treatable with the smallpox vaccine.
News media is eager to calm the fears of the public.

Since when? :rotflmao: I've been sequestered in my home for most of 2 years because there was a huge "Fuck science" movement.

Gotta get out of those Red States.

Re: Monkeypox in London

Every time I see this topic, I think "Monkeypox in London" sounds like the title of some lost Terry Gilliam film.

Re: Monkeypox in London

An update. There are now more than 300 cases in the UK.

https://www.bbc.co.uk/news/health-61709659

From the reports that I've been reading, less than 5% of cases are in women. Quite of few of cases are linked to men who went to "saunas and bathhouses" which is how I guess the UK press is implying "men who have sex with men"?

One thing that these news reports do confirm: this is community-spread and is now passing from human to human which is not frequently seen outside of subSaharan Africa.

Re: Monkeypox in London

A further update. The smallpox vaccine is to be offered to at risk men.

Interesting.

As of last week, there were 3,098 reported cases of monkeypox in 41 countries.

This is a breakdown of the top 5 countries where the cases are located:
  • UK - 793 (25.6%)
  • Spain - 497 (16.0%)
  • Germany - 469 (15.1%)
  • Portugal - 304 (9.8%)
  • France - 277 (8.9%)

The US has 141 total reported cases (about 80 new cases this week). Canada has 210 cases.

There was an increase in cases in North America that may be connected to the International Mr Leather (IML) convention in Chicago over Memorial Day weekend (May 26-30). There isn't a total number of cases with clear connection to IML but at least 5 cases were reported by the Chicago Health Department as being connected to IML.

WHO is going to meet in the near future to rename the virus species (which officially is "monkeypox").

Hopefully, we'll end up with something better than Gay-Related Immune Deficiency.

Re: Monkeypox in London

^ Please, no more Greek letters!

Since it's related to Smallpox but not as deadly, maybe call it Minipox....kidding.

And just when you thought it was save to go out again...

CDC: 7 deaths in Florida amid "one of the worst outbreaks of meningococcal disease among gay and bisexual men in U.S. history" [CBS]
Health officials on Wednesday recommended that men in Florida who have sex with other men get a meningococcal vaccine following what the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention called "one of the worst outbreaks of meningococcal disease among gay and bisexual men in U.S. history."

The CDC said in a statement that there have been at least 24 cases and seven deaths among gay and bisexual men caused by the bacteria in Florida recently. The CDC also recommended that gay and bisexual men traveling to Florida should ask their health care provider about getting the vaccine.

Meningococcal Disease in Florida, 2022 [CDC.gov]
In response to an ongoing outbreak of serogroup C meningococcal disease in Florida, CDC is encouraging gay, bisexual, and other men who have sex with men to:
  • Get a MenACWY vaccine if they live in Florida
  • Talk with their healthcare provider about getting a MenACWY vaccine if they are traveling to Florida

In addition, CDC is highlighting that MenACWY vaccination is routinely recommended for all people with HIV in the United States.
