• Hi Guest - Did you know?
Hot Topics is a Safe for Work (SFW) forum.

My neighbor has a confederate flag.

It's actually really disturbing how unabashadly racist people are around here. I've lived in small town Georgia and I never saw an instance of it, but it's really a daily thing here.
I see tons of bumper stickers that I guess they think are clever, but just make me sad because some people are so willing to look like idiots.

well.....i own a Confederate flag and drive a ford bronce 1993 5.8 liter engine and the thing is i am not the slightest bit racist. the reason i have it is because i see it representing my ancestors gave their lives for what they believe in and the civil war was the deadliest war US has ever been in because it was a total loss for both sides in lives

just because there are skewed thoughts and preconceived notions of things doesn't mean they are what everyone else thinks they are. from reading this it sounds like a conservative republican is saying about gays rights just we are talking about the flag instead.... but don't take me to seriously i am only a newbie

I see that we think alike.

Well...I can't imagine a damn Yankee displaying that particular flag unless it was a statement of, at the least, extreme teabaggery...and I don't mean in the fun way...

But, what really chaps my ass, as a Southern man, is that those assholes have co-opted an honorable banner into a symbol of hatred and idiocy.

If any Confederate flag offends you, you likely need to study more history...

Hatred and idiocy from the south?!
I would never!!!

Cool...what part of GA? I think my favorite is Waynesboro...but it's hard to beat Savannah...

But they have, and it's irreversible. The swastika was once an innocuous sun wheel, remember.

Nope. YOU need to read more history, especially of the Civil Rights movement and the opposition to it. The flag in question is now, whatever its origins, a racist banner, and being offended by it is not only reasonable but more or less required of decent people everywhere.

Besides, the CSA was, despite what some modern Southerners like to claim, fundamentally a rebellion by slaveholders against the lawful authority of the United States. Everyone, including Southerners, should be glad that it was put down, and its flag (even its naval ensign) should have no honor now.

i have a picture of myself saluting the confederate flag lol. it was out of good fun..

Don't put it up on the internet. If you ever want anyone to think you're not a racist, that picture could come back to haunt you.

Perhaps it is important to note that the Stars & Stripes was once also the flag of slavery.

Did that flag redeem itself by vanquishing the treasonous confederate states? When they instituted Martin Luther King Day? Or just when exactly?

Trash comes in all walks of life. If they were smarter they would know that its against our lifestyle.

I might be wrong, but I'm pretty sure it's the south's flag during the civil war. And like some hardcore rednecks in the south put it up to I don't express that they wished they had won the war...or believe in the south's ideals for the war.

But like I said....we live in New York, even back then we still used the regular flag.

Actually, southern guys have a confederate flag as a symbol to their heritage, for the majority of southerners who has this flag, it is not a symbol of hatred or bigotry, despite popular opinion. Southerners fly it for the reason that a puerto rican would have a puerto rico flag in or on their cars.

Not to be awkward and pedantic, but can someone explain to me what a confederate flag is? !oops!

In the church, there is a statue of St. Andrew himself, holding a big X in his hands. Why? He lived far too long ago to have been a Spike Lee fan or a follower of Malcolm X.
The reason he is holding the X is that it is not an X – it is a cross. Saint Andrew, you see, was crucified on an X-shaped cross.
The St. Andrew's Cross is not unique to the Confederate battle flag. The reason that the Confederate States of America put the St. Andrew's Cross on its flag is the Scottish heritage of the South.

This guy is a shit wad but aside from his bigoted views such as

"Perhaps the Left also despises the St. Andrew's Cross because of Andrew's very name – it means "manly" in Greek. Post-modern, relativist western civilization simply cannot abide the concept of manliness."

He got the flag of a few southern states right and the battle flag of the Confederacy.
Isn't it strange the question was asked by a JUBBER from Scotland and the flags heritage goes back to Scotland?

Doesn't matter what they MEAN by it. It IS a racist symbol, and flying it is (that is, will be read as) a statement of personal racism, whether they like it or not.

People keep making this same lame-ass argument, in this thread and elsewhere. That flag is a symbol of a heritage of violence, racism, and hatred, one the South should be attempting to live down, not celebrate.

I guess there are neo nazis who use the swastikas as a symbol of their heritage too.
