NO Henny Penny, there is no impending depression

Yes. Everything is coming up roses.

thanks ;)

ok so we are back where we started then... IF the economy is stagnant then the unemployment rate would be rising. IF the unemployment rate is not rising even though its adding jobs then theres an expansion happening.

Hence the title of the thread....

There is NO impending depression. There is no impending recession.

There IS a severe manufacturing issue. America has to make stuff or it wont grow jobs and it wont see an improved consumer confidence. The working class fuel the economy, not the rich.

The working class need more cash to make the whole thing work better, and that wont happen as long as we are on an excessive cutting binge without raising revenue through taxation.

That has to come from the mega corps and it has to come from the rich. They are the only ones with stagnant funds available.

Oh there's no doubt there's not an impending depression. I think its debatable whether there's an impending recession. Next month's report is going to be a pretty significant one either way, because it will at least point the arrow.

It's between 16% and 18% now, and wildly variable between regions.

You two are arguing over the value of a point on a curve and the slope of the curve at that point. Try using the definitions I gave -- I'll even abbreviate them:

JL(BP) = no new jobs at all
JL(JB3) = not enough jobs to keep ahead of the number of new workers

you make a good point in the regional issue.

The Commonwealth's economy is expanding faster than the rest of the nation. There are a few places that are out performing and a few places that are underperforming.

We are talking about a national average after all.

The bad news for Obama is that the places that have growth are already inthe bag for him in 2012. The swing states are mixed. The automotive industry recovery, aided by the japanese tragedy, is helping some swing states, but by and large, the swing states that Obama needs for an electoral college victory are stagnating economically.

Its my belief that these states are underperforming due to right wing social engineering at the expense of the economy, but I do acnowledge that as an opinion.;)

Boehner and his gang ran on the jobs jobs jobs platform last year. Where are the jobs? Where are the jobs programs? There are none. Let's focus on gay marriage, abortion, dismantling unions, getting rid of Medicare. They didn't say anything about that before the election. Use the excuse of "we're broke".

If jobs are lost from the budget cuts, "so be it". He doesn't care about creating jobs.

The Republicans were elected on a jobs program platform. Jobs aren't being created "fast enough" to keep up with population increase.

If jobs are lost due to budget cuts, so be it.

Who the fuck put these people in office?

If the economy expands for three quarters, or nine consecutive months, the economists will declare the recession over.

next month is the ninth month.

Wanna make a bet on what is going to happen? easy money on a weak but still expanding economy and jobs still outpacing growth, but marginally so.

The economy is not goodI travel all throughout the US - major cities - and i always chat with people who live and work thereWash DC is the only place doing well - hmmmmJust sayingGuess when ur in charge u will say anything to support .......The guy in chargeAnd BP - quit dominating ur threadI know u prob went thru withdrawal being away and all but take it slowJust saying

When you chat with these people, do you speak in haiku?

but you just said that it had to add 200,000 just to break even.

so how can that be jobless?

come along here with me, buddy....

next step....

Growth of the job market has to outpace the the growth of the need for jobs, or the economic expansion, so that means that.,...

the economy is growing, not receding or depressing.

BP, they don't know the difference between job creation and job loss. During the Bush administration, there was job loss. Now there's job creation. Jobs aren't being created fast enough so that's a bad thing. It's creation, but it's not enough. Time to blame Obama.

The graph in pulling out of a recession and an improving economy is never a complete smooth upwards angle.

It's never good enough for some of these people.

Who's blaming Obama? He can't control all of it.

AND remember that the last three months were adjusted after the fact to show a higher amount than first counted. That means that things are very fluid and hard to get a hold of right now.

People that have been out of work since 2007 have been added back into the job market recently. that makes a HUGE difference. That means that people THINK its getting better and are looking again.

April’s numbers exceeded the forecasts of analysts, who had expected a gain of 185,000 jobs over all, with the change in private payrolls of 200,000. The uptick in the unemployment rate that came even as employers were adding jobs was an indication that more people were entering the work force as hopes for hiring increased.

http://www.outsidethebeltway.com/unemployment-rate-rises-to-9-0-but-economy-adds-244000-jobs/

the truth of american employment is that for whatever reason, only about 64 percent of adult americans work. This in an anomaly.

The unemployment rate does not reflect how many people actually have jobs and pay taxes. it reflects who is applying for unemployment benefits.

I guess we need to go back to the smoke and mirrors time of the Bush administration. Yes that'll be so wise.

Who said everything was going to get solved over night?

The "smoke and mirrors" is what we're presently experiencing.

The man on the street is well aware of the fact that unemployment is far worse than the government released numbers...

Well, when my last visit to my local grocery store revealed that a pack of Kraft American singles was $4.79, and a loaf of decent bread was $4.29, it's obvious to see that something is going on...

American cheese and bread used to be what you ate when you had no money, remember ?

That being said, I think this is more of an artificial depression/recession/inflation.....

I get the feeling that I'm going to say this until I'm blue in the face- But, between now and Nov. 2012, remember that *everything* you hear in the media, and all the prices you see from homes to cars to packs of cheese is being manipulated.

Rove is pissed.

its so much more complex than that.

people want to turn on the news, and in two minutes or less be told by someone a simple "better" or "worse" answer.

The economic environment we are in does not comply with simple answers. We got here.... from record surplus to record debt in the 8 years of the Bush presidency.

The man on the street is WELL aware of that and the promises the repubs made to win the house ( grow jobs and protect medicare) and they are watching this time.

remember NY26, my friend. It is going to be repeated at least 25 more times if not more.

Someone pointed out to me just today that eggs doubled in price in a year.

As has gasoline in Obama's tenure.

These things could weigh heavily on the Democrats if things don't change soon...

When you chat with these people, do you speak in haiku?

don't be confused Bob

speaking is not the same as writing

or as reading for that matter ;)

love cabbies - they really know the city - not just where things are geographically but people

you want a read of a city, talk to the cabbies

i bullshit u not

my "most impressive" cabbie list might have Las Vegas at the top

It's Bush's fault ;)

He bought up all the chickens for his ranch in Texas ;)

And he started that war in Iraq u know

soon?

Its a year and a half before the election. Voters go with the moment. Things change so quickly its ridiculous.

Even a month in politics is an eternity.

what really amuses me here is that the republicans are arguing that the economy is bad just for the sake of saying Obama is a bad president, not out of interest in how economics work.

That is not really a good way to figure out what the truth is.

are we going to have a talk about you telling me and others what to do again?
