Not enough votes to end DADT filibuster?

Well Collins has stated she will vote no.

Up to Brown, Lugar and the rest of the Dems now.

Not looking good.

Not surprising... End the fucking two party system already.

The Rethuglicans and Dumbocrats need to just die out as a national party.

Can we get this guy banned yet?

Seriously, his trolling isn't even subtle anymore.

Seriously. I was going to say to him "Who is we?" since it's glaringly obvious that he isn't really gay. I'm leaning towards him being an android built by the Religious Right sent to torment us until we change our wicked ways.

Since DADT is attached to an appropriations bill, the Senate could go for reconciliation - which means that all that would be needed would be a simple majority. If need be, V.P. Biden would be the tie-breaker.

... but I know they won't.

What would happen if our elected officials would opt to do the right thing instead of having political motivations?

^^^

It's much more complicated than that.

Omnibus bills like an amended appropriations bill can't be voted on for reconciliation in its entirety all at once. They are broken down into smaller bits and voted on one by one.

Since DADT is not an appropriation or shown objectively to reduce the deficit, it would not be voted on during reconciliation.

Thanks for the info. It appears that in spite of 2008, the Republicans are in control. November election will just make it official. ](*,)

The minority party is given a lot of control, but the sword cuts both ways. It also means that Republicans need 60 votes to remove the repeal from the defense bill.

Just so everyone is aware, this is not the end of the repeal effort this year. Remember, the defense bill has been reported out of committee with the repeal attached, and as I already said that would make it very difficult to remove.

The defense authorization bill isn't something that can fail and move on to the next year. Our military needs money and that's a fact. With the repeal attached to it, Senate Republicans will have no choice but eventually relent.

From my point of view, it's the DREAM act which is tying up the Senate now, not so much the repeal of Don't Ask Don't Tell.

What will happen now is likely concessions made by Reid after which some Republicans like Susan Collins will allow the bill to go forward. Of course that will mean more room for Republicans to fiddle with the defense bill and related amendments, because Reid is not as ready to hold our country's bravest citizens hostage to politics as the Republicans are.

That's all very true. I'm calmer now. ;)

We're already seeing cracks in the GOP with the 'tea party' infiltration. The Dems are just being replaced this time so they may have their own 'tea party' style infiltration next cycle.

I knew this wasn't going to get passed before the homophobic GOP took over.
I just knew it. Because the Dems and Obama weren't doing enough to push it through. I blame the Dems and the president as much as the Repugs.

Harry Reid is full of shit, too. He had a strong hand in killing it's chance with his not so sneaky moves.

I have to agree. And Coolkid, don't give me some nonsense about trying to lighten the mood.

You know I believe we're being trolled by some paid str8t republican op who has been caught in some of the most outrageous lies in other threads on JUB.

This best thing is for everyone to agree to hit the Ignore button at the same time.

I'm in.

Anyone else?

Sure but my point is it shouldn't be necessary. Obvious trolls have been banned in the past. It's gotten to the point that this troll is obvious.

He's on ignore for me now.

I'm already ignoring him like I ignore the Yankees and RedSox fans. GO RAYS (at least one thing to be happy for).

Don't need an ignore button too.

True, but it will take a while for that to show, so we'll have to endure TEA [STRIKE]Party[/STRIKE] Wing of the GOP in Congress for a bit.

I didn't expect much from Harry Reid when it comes to Equal Rights.

Yah I just read about the vote from a feed. Sadly I blame democrats more than republicans here considering 3 democrats voted against it.

As an aside; also in this bill, there was a pay raise for troops that got turned down. Again this is typical of current politicians to look at parts instead of the sum of the bill. It's why there is no compromise in politics anymore and it will eventually fail.

Sad but true. Our system is already failing.

What the fuck is wrong with this decrepit John McCain?

http://blogs.phoenixnewtimes.com/valleyfever/2010/09/gay_rights_advocates_not_thril.php

That geezer is filibustering Don't Ask Don't Tell. He doesn't want you in the military. Hey faggots, you're second class citizens. Wasn't McCain for equal rights for gays until he was against them? That old fart needs to retire and quit politics. He's one of the sleaziest politicians in the country.

For what it's worth, as an Endowment Member of the NRA I just sent a letter which should theoretically go by email to the whole NRA. Basically I called on everyone to tell McCain that we believe the only thing that matters is if a person can shoot straight, not whether he or she is straight, and to stop pursuing his personal moral agenda and get on with supporting liberty.

Now: bets on whether the PTBs at NRA HQ actually send it?

Milquetoast, coward, Harry Reid must, must, must, turn the cameras on and force the Republicans to filibuster the bill as the filibuster is meant to be used. He must let the cameras roll while Republicans get up there for hours, upon hours on end reading a book on Dr. Suess or the Bible, or whatever for all of America to see. Additionally, he must roll out the cots and run the Senate 24/7 unabated until the bill passes. Lastly, the Democrats need to be on the news shows telling the truth to America by saying that the Republicans hate America and hate the troops for dragging their feet.

The Republicans have caved the other 3 times he's done this in the past year. He MUST do this again. He should have been doing this all along, but he's such a milquetoast, coward, I doubt he will. Harry Reid is Progressive's worst person in Congress. He needs to be replaced, unless he finds his sagging Morman balls and runs the Senate as he should.

Absolutely. I forget what rules it is, but the majority leader can require a real filibuster on matters of substance, and if this bill doesn't qualify, nothing does -- defense is not an optional matter under the Constitution.

I have to agree. And Coolkid, don't give me some nonsense about trying to lighten the mood.

I don't have him on ignore because when I see his avatar out of the corner of my eye it looks like a grinning toy pig, and that's worth a chuckle.

Of course I'd rather see McCain squeal like a stuck pig. Maybe we could get him to go hunting with Dick Cheney?

Sad but true. Our system is already failing.

And when it really fails, someone will be there with authoritarian measures for "fixing" it.

I'd rather march on Washington, [Text: Removed by Moderator], and make the rest amend the Constitution to make representation in the House proportional within state delegations.

Oh -- and end the corporate personhood nonsense; if it ain't a living, breathing human, it has no rights.

Oh -- and write in the rights of privacy and freedom of association, for those who don't get it.

Sigh.

Again, the US remains stuck in the 1940's while the rest of the western world has moved on.

I don't agree with attaching something like the repeal of DADT to an appropriations bill.

1. It's Authorization not Appropriations.

2. The Defense Authorization bill deals with a myriad of issues across the entire military. DADT is clearly a military issue.

3. DADT was originally passed in the 1993 Defense Authorization bill.

I hardly think this is an inappropriate bill for it.

Besides, however it is passed there will be a debate and a vote just on DADT, either as an amendment in this case or a separate bill.

Let it stand on its own and be voted up or down.
That will happen whether it is part of this bill or not.
