Not enough votes to end DADT filibuster?

Guys, this is all politics. Both sides get to show their supporters how they are "fighting for them in Washington".

Nothing of any value gets done in Washington before a big election.

Heck, the US Congress hasn't even looked at passing a budget -- headlines in local papers and tv stations saying that Congress has just passed the largest spending bill in American history -- it's not going to happen in an election year.

Today was very saddening to Democracy in general, as well as to us. It didn't even get to be Filibustered because of the fucking Republicans, ok we get it, the GOP hates fags, but can't they at least take the time to let a vote occur.

I was almost in tears in the School library when I watched Dick Durbin's speech on the DREAM Act. The man LOVES our country, and the people who want to make it better, as myself. I saw a passion in a man for his government job that we never usually see. I wanted to cry for him, and the work he put into it, as well as how close we came to having a path to legal residency.

Republicans hate the people who want to serve our nation, and risk their lives because they Love the United States of America. Whether it be Gays or Immigrants, they Love America more then some of these GOP "Senators" do.

I know I slam on the Republicans often, but they have found a new low. They have not killed it, on delayed it.

But today, we witnessed Republicans do the following:

- Delay funding to the Defense Dep.
- Prove they were not interested in how much gays serve the U.S.A.
- Prove again that they are anti-immigration, and anti multicultural.

The DREAM Act did not hand out green cards left and right, you had to Intense qualifiers that many Americans would fail, but they enjoy rights simply by birth. I swore we fought a war against the notion one people should ruler another unjustly, no matter what they contributed. The GOP seems to forget this.

Yet I'm ranting now. We won't give up and it is clear to me now, that the only party at this time interested in protecting and defending the United States of America is the Democrats...

is there any particular reason why Harry Reid insisted on bringing this to the floor now, today, when the DA/DT study is set to be completed in December? and knowing that the DREAM act was going to polarize republicans (and even members of his own caucus), why insist on inserting it into this bill? and why completely block off debate or allowing the GOP to propose their own amendments when that right there directly cost him GOP votes?

I just don't understand how they can stand there with a straight face and say they are all about smaller government when at the same time they decide which Americans can serve their country and which Americans can marry. The stupid thing is, when the US actually gets around to recognizing gay marriage be it civil or otherwise, Americans will be loudly proclaiming how "forward thinking" and "leading edge" they are. Puke. Currently we have 35 countries with far more advanced protections and policies for gay couples. By the time the US gets around to it, probably 50 or more will have better policies. But yeah, America is soooo leading edge.

My fellow Americans are so damn dumb, and untraveled by in large it's tragic. They'll honestly believe this, as if the rest of the world is in some backwater hole unaware of advanced and better standards of living, quality of life, healthcare, social protections, and a host of other items. My god even countries in central and south America have more progressive laws on gay couples/marriages.

And yet we will still need a defense authorization act for 2011. Liberal Democrats will filibuster any attempt to strip a repeal from the current one as reported. There aren't 60 votes to allow Republicans to do that, and I doubt there would be 51 votes to strip the repeal even if there were an up or down vote.

Which is why the more moderate Republicans hopefully will support moving forward after the election in a less contentious atmosphere.

Republicans are saying that the Democrats are "railroading" this through without adequate debate. McCain is asking why the Senate can't wait until at least after the services have had a chance to complete their surveys, expected in December (after the election). What's the rush?

The rush is that come after the election, we might not have enough Dems to vote for it. It would fine and dandy to wait for the surveys and all the other bullshit slowing it down, but the fact remains that there is no reason logically that a persons sexuality affects how they serve, and the time to get it through against the GOP's Religious-Reich is when we have the support.

Yes, the Dems want to shove it through, and the Republicans, i.e. McCain, use the smoke screen of the "waiting for surveys" as a means to delay it until after the election.

I forgot to mention, Scott Brown (R-MA) is a dick . He represents Massachusetts, my home, the Gay (aka Bay) State and he goes against the progress we have made compared to other states. All I have to say is wait until 2014, because he is in for a hell of a surprise.

So I heard some stupid right wing asshole on television say that if he were a homo in the forces he wouldn't want the others to find out because he'd be afraid of getting shot as a reason not to repeal 'Dont Ask Don't Tell.'

So I checked and in all the countries who have gays and lesbians serving in the forces, none have reported that their own troops are so undisciplined and fucked up that they've picked off their comrades.

Now we know that the US has a very high rate of friendly fire accidents, but why would anyone in a position of public prominence think so little of the men and women in their forces to call them all potential sociopathic murderers?

I think this sends a very bad message to the rest of the world.

Gay men and women have served in military for years giving up in some cases there right to serve and protect our country.

Not at all Jock. I think Reid was insincere in wanting a vote on this combined with the other laws he added to this bill. He wanted some talking points in his and other political races.

If my memory serves me correctly the report from the military is due the end of the year.

A vote should have been scheduled at that time -- this is just grandstanding.

I expect it to pass.

I want to know what "significant change" that guy's talking about. Does he expect some big parade of guys in frilly pink undies to descend on Marine barracks everywhere? or gays already in units to suddenly start hitting on their comrades because now they won't get kicked out?

Seem to me he contradicted himself: if the Marines have discipline, no problem -- if he expects a problem, then they must not actually have discipline.
