Yep sonny, read that Matt den Dekker had another great game tonight and looking forward to seeing him get some playing time in September, just on the defensive skills alone. Anthony of course will be called up for September and look forward to seeing him again but John Buck still is here and the Mets have to play Travis, who got his first MLB regular season hit tonight, a double. I'm assuming Buck will be included in a big trade and Tony will return next year as the backup catcher since he definitely does everything expected in the role, plus has that power threat too off the bench.

I'm glad to see the Jackie Robinson statue rededicated and I hope so much as well the punks that did this get their cowardly, bigoted asses caught. Beautiful rainbow.... saw it from work yesterday but over the Brooklyn sky near the stadium it looks so gorgeous.


Hoping Bobby Parnell doesn't need surgery but it does look like Jeremy Hefner and Jennry Mejia are done for the season. Jennry's is less serious getting his elbow cleaned up of bone spurs and he should be fine by spring training, but Jeremy getting Tommy John Surgery for his partially torn elbow ligament will surely miss most of next season. The good news is that the success rate in recovery for this procedure has improved dramatically and many who have this surgery come back good as new, but at the very least it might not be until next August that Jeremy can play again and it's likely if he remains with the Mets organization we won't see him til 2015 spring training but hopeful all goes well.

David Wright I did read wants to play again this season, though even if he does it won't be likely til the last two or three weeks of the season but he did mention he wanted to come back again and end the season on a positive mental note he was again healthy going into the offseason.

Zack pitched very well tonight... six scoreless innings though after two outs got the bases loaded, and Carlos Torres allowed them all to score on a ringing double by Braves shortstop Andrelton Simmons. Zack went six and two thirds innings allowing six hits and three runs, walking three and striking out five. He got the victory against Atlanta, his third win of his six major league wins so far against is hometown club as the Mets won 5-3 opening up the homestand. Biggest stars tonight offensively was Marlon Byrd with two hits including his career high 21st homer and Ike Davis rapping two clutch hits homering in the 8th after ripping a run scoring single early in the game. I'm sure sonny likes the sweet taste of the first victory but would love to take at least two against our old adversaries from Atlanta!

Well well well how about that
Atlanta Braves meet Zack Wheeler who was as Keith said the best he has been. tossed a lot of fastballs and quality strikes and consistently got ahead of the Braves all night.

Yup Saucy I was so happy to see DWright last night I am told he was thrilled to be back with his boys, most important David is confident he will return after all something most of us feared would not happen.
If he continues on his current pace, which we thought was slow, he could be playing in Lucie by next week which would put him on track to be back to the Mets in early September and wouldn’t that be awesome.
Let’s hope David continues to heal and his prediction of a return this year comes true.

D'Arnaud finally got his first major league hit I was beginning to worry about that kid let’s hope it is the start of something big for him. Nice his dad was at the game to see that.

Of course the other thing besides the fact that we chop chopped those Braves was seeing Ike homer; Ike didn’t just reach the Pepsi Porch he nearly cleared it. Man did he need that

We will have to wait on word from Hefner he will get a second opinion from a private doctor if he gets the surgery we won’t see him again until after the All Star break next year at the earliest usually a one year recovery from TJS too bad. And as to Bobby Parnell who also went back to the doctor yesterday herniated disc surgery is still a possibility and he has still not been cleared to start doing any baseball activities. He is just going to wait it out a bit longer and is just not sure of surgery and also thinks there’s a point in time when if it does not get better they'll push for it, basically a waiting game at this point. For now he will continue therapy every day and hopefully get stronger. Bobby did predict that if he were to have surgery he should be ready for spring training next season.

So can Jon give us a 2 game sweep today?

Mets lost in 10 to Atlanta at Citi Field today, 4-1. Bad call in the Atlanta part of the 10th on Freddy Freeman's roller that Mets reliever Scott Rice apparently got the out in time but the ump blew the call and got the benches riled, Terry Collins and Daniel Murphy both livid getting thrown out. They bring in Burke to face and he gives up a three run homer to Chris Johnson, and that pretty much sealed it for the Mets getting the short end of the stick today. They couldn't put Atlanta away early, so the bats were just as much to blame as the questionable call and the three run homer.

Early on Jonathon Niese continued to show a lot of positivity as he went seven innings giving up just one run and five hits and striking out nine but a scary moment in the sixth as Niese hit Atlanta right fielder Jason Heyward in the batting helmet with a 90mph fastball that clearly was not intended to hurt him but got away from Niese. He was a very shaken up and you could tell he was bothered as Heyward was attended to and though he denied it was effecting his pitching he did give up a run in the sixth and gave up two hits in the seventh before dealing a strikeout to end his day and keep Atlanta at bay. Juan Lagares made another fantastic defensive play earlier throwing out another runner, shortstop Andrelton Simmons trying to stretch a single into a double in the fourth..... he's really showing something out there and with equally exciting and talented defensive whiz Matt den Dekker coming up soon it's going to be fun seeing them patrol the outfield as highlights waiting to happen and hopefully one or both will show enough to be significant offensive contributors as well.

Well Saucy I will tell you Murph never gets that hot or as upset with an umpire as he did yesterday yelling at umpire Jerry Layne when those runs scored after that call. In fact easy goin Murph rarely gets rattled by much he is a way to easy go with the flow kinda guy. But that call just set him off, he said he was interviewed after the game and from what he said I think you are going to see when it airs is something you may have not seen before an angry frustrated and defiant Daniel. No regrets other than letting his emotions get to him later when he thrown his glove down like that for all to see and he felt it was wrong of him to let himself get thrown out. Justin Turner made a good point when he said next year, we’ll find out whether or not the call was right," referring o course to the new replay rules that are coming, as it appears right now a manager will get one challenge in the first six inning and then two challenges in the innings that follow to the games completion. After all three challenges are used the umps can make a review on home runs as they do now. I have not decided if I like the way it is being proposed but will wait for my opinion after it has been finalized and voted on in November. Some are saying it will slow the game down but in yesterday game we saw how the review would have taken made by the guys in NY in under a minute instead of the five mins + we had last night with Murphy Collins being tossed. Plus what would have happened had Collins used up his challenges when that happened?
I dono I am still up in the air on how I feel and need to talk to some ball players about it.
Murph has a really good relationship with the umps he enjoys talking to them on the field and just about every at bat he will ask the home plate ump about a call sometimes just a word like “high”? or “low”? not at all disrespectful he just wants to understand the umps thinking he does that on both strikes and balls he just likes knowing how the ump came up with the call; like I said all with respect and just plain curiosity. Murphy wants to talk baseball all the time loves to talk about it for hours it’s a science for him always analyzing the game and desperate to learn all he can. I realized something the other day while I was speaking to L.J. Mazzilli at the ball park in Brooklyn, I told L.J he reminded me of Murphy cause they are so much alike on that L.J. loves to talk about the game just like Murph both are constantly working to improve their game. I want very much to get those two in a room and just sit back and watch and listen to them talk baseball, I need to make that happen

Jon NIese was just depressed as Hell over what happened to Heyward he felt just awful. After it happened Jon tapped himself with his glove and Heyward placed a quick hand to his heart in acknowledgement. John Buck who got a firsthand look at the injury spoke about how scary it was as he saw Heyward spitting up blood. Heyward’s grandparents saw the incident from the stands they had attended that game and went with him to the hospital. Heyward suffered a fractured jaw and will be out 4-6 weeks.

The boys get a day to cool off today the first day off since Aug. 5. Tomorrow the Tigers come to NY with Carlos Torres who has taken Jenrry Mejia’s spot and then a big one on Saturday with Matt Harvey and Max Scherzer it will be the first time they will face off since the All Star game.

Well, a one day break in the schedule following the recent road trip and two against the Braves is probably a welcome site for the Mets. They've been playing pretty well, overall, losing some close games, usually late. Most of it is due to not hitting enough with men in scoring position, but occasionally, it's the bullpen that coughs it up. Starting pitching has been good to outstanding most nights. The Mets are rising, with some holes to plug for next season, but definitely in a much better position than at this time last year. Bring on the TIgers and Miggy. Lets go Mets!!

Well, Dice-K's Mets debut wasn't exactly what everyone had in mind... allowed five runs on six hits in five innings and definitely wasn't showing much. At least his signing with the Mets is a short term thing , just for the rest of the year and it was a good risk for the Mets to se if they could capture lightning in a bottle here but first game wasn't really encouraging at all. Mets lose 6-1 to Detroit dropping the opener of their interleague series at CitiField.

Great news about DWright, sonny... he keeps himself in great shape and seeing him start resuming physical activity coming back from the pulled hamstring is at least some heartening news, hopefully we will see him back in the lineup sometime in September and he can have a good finish to the season as he had been enjoying a very productive year after signing the eight year deal to remain a Met and hopefully finish his career as a Met.

Sorry that your Brooklyn boys lost Thursday night when they were aired by SNY..... looked at the results of last night's game and they were MUCH better, pounding Vermont in a 10-2 victory. Should have saved that for their SNY close up!

Yup Saucy my boy we played much better last night and with just 12 games left in the 2013 season, the Cyclones are 1/2 a game out of the playoffs.

The fun should be had today when Matt Harvey faces Max Scherzer. The bad news is the game airs on FOX not SNY but the really really good news is that Kevin Burkhardt does the call along with Rod Allen

The Dude is back! Luca returns to the Mets today and Mike Baxter has been demoted to Las Vegas.
Murph is really happy for Lucas the two are great friends
Duda is hitting .308 with eight RBIs and 14 walks in 62 at-bats in Triple-A. Later today Collins will tell us how he plans on using Lucas with the possibility of either sharing time with Eric Young Jr. in left field, or with Ike Davis against righties at first base, of course he could also serve as a lefty bat for the bench. Wally Backman had Duda playing first base pretty much every day.

Yep, saw that they recalled Lucas Duda from Las Vegas.... he was hitting .308 and seemingly had his swing back, and as sonny mentioned had 14 walks so his patience is much better. It appears he will not be used much in the outfield, primarily first base backup and DHing next week in Cleveland, a rare opportunity to see a DH used by the NL Mets.

Weird game by Matt Harvey opposing fellow All Star game Detroit pitching star Max Scherzer. Matt walked no one, struck out just four and allowed a surprising 13 hits in six and two thirds innings but only allowed the two runs that scored on the fourth... ironically one of those hits driving in a run was by Max Scherzer. Of course the heartening thing was as much as Mat Harvey bent today getting hit around uncharacteristically, he did not break. I was proud his competitive streak took to the fore and he would not give up any more runs no matter how shaky he appeared giving up all those hits. Unfortunately, characteristically for so many of Matt Harvey's starts the Mets offense did next to nothing as the Mets were shut out 3-0, with only Daniel Murphy's two hits and Ike Davis showing encouraging signs getting two hits including a ringing double off the super tough Scherzer. Scherzer definitely got the better of Matt Harvey today but still proud of Matt for being tough and not giving in to Detroit and falling apart when things weren't working anywhere near what he is and we are accomplished to seeing. Losing two of three to a strong Detroit club so far is a bit of a letdown, and though I love Eric Young he doesn't drive the ball enough and get extra base hits and isn't a good enough hitter for average to be better than a solid fourth outfielder... a good contributor but this club needs someone at the top of the order who can manufacture runs in more different ways, like driving the ball for doubles and triples like Jose Reyes use to( not saying for the Mets to try to bring Jose back, as some have foolishly speculated they should do... he has lost a bit and the page has been turned. We just need someone who can generate more runs driving the ball as well as with his legs.)We need more speed, more consistent power, guys that work counts in their favor, and most importantly more timely hitting in clutch situations. No way with all the pitcher power we're developing in Harvey, Wheeler, and others should we fail to score enough to win a good share of games.

Not such a great Mets weekend as our boys are swept by the Tigers at Citi. Dillon Gee like Matt Harvey on Saturday didn't have his best stuff but battled... gave up a two run homer to the MVP in waiting Miguel Cabrera early, which is no disgrace but went to the well one too many times allowing a two run homer by Andy Dirks in the sixth. Gee lasted six innings, giving up four runs and ten hits in total. Relief held up til the ninth but disaster ensued with eight straight Detroit batters getting on base and seven runs scored off of LaTroy Hawkins and Scott Achison who couldn't stem the bleeding. Detroit winds up taking an until then winnable game despite the Mets behind a run 4-3 to a 11-3 wipeout.

Mets did have some highlights though as Travis d'Arnaud hit a two run homer, his first and was pushed out by his teammates to take a curtain call from the fans, wanting to celebrate the first homer by what fans and the organization believe will be a core stud in the everyday lineup defensively and most important offensively. He was very touched and honored by the fan's enthusiasm and the support of his teammates and seems like a really good kid with a good head on his shoulders. Promising outfielder Juan Lagares also played very well with two hits and Daniel Murphy drove in the other Mets run with a hit.

Yeech... last thing we need but a forearm is better than an elbow or shoulder. Still feel bad for Matt who's worked so hard this year and is on the verge of greatness and hoping it's nothing serious. Always better as we Mets fans have too often learned the hard way to be safe than sorry and I'm sure you'll update us sonny as soon as you hear something from KB and the guys.

OH FUCK!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! Just read on ESPN baseball Matt Harvey is out for the rest of the year..at least.. with a partial elbow tear and Tommy John surgery is possible, similar to Jeremy Hefner. Feel AWFUL for Matt and bet as bad as everyone around the Mets and their fans he feels worst of all. Not career threatening or anything, and as much as Matt struggled Saturday he WAS still throwing hard. But Stephen Strasburg was given cautious treatment too and hurt his elbow and had the same surgery after his rookie year and now is back 100%. SUCKS though to think you can limit innings and pitches all you want and not have a risky arm delivery and STILL DAMAGE YOUR ELBOW!!!! Track record in recent years is good though on Tommy John surgery recovery and no doubt Matt will be back as good as ever but just the LAST thing anyone in the Mets world or their fans need. It shows how risky it is to primarily rely on pitching... but how dangerous it would be as well to give up our best young arms like Wheeler, Montero, Syndegaard, etc,. We need to sign a guy like Jacoby Ellsbury this winter(make sure in the NY market he knows at ALL times how many outs there are though, lol!)... not of course if he wants beyond six years but he is the type of dynamic leadoff man who can get things going. Because we CAN'T give up too many of our promising young studs on the farm if we want to have a young, deep, intimidating rotation.... we just have to spend on targeted studs like Jacoby and make smart trades that don't wipe out the prime studs in our system. Re-sign Marlon Byrd for one year as well.. hopefully Jacoby could move to left and we platoon Juan Lagares/ Matt den Dekker in center and maybe get a solid guy to hold the fort at shortstop who can field well and provide some stick and speed. Keep building on our pitching, hold on to them as long as possible until Harvey/ Hefner are healthy again, and most of all PRAY LIKE HELL NOTHING else happens to Wheeler and all our promising pitchers on the farm!!!

So after that very somber day yesterday I am hoping for something good to happen today anything will do. I am sure you guys got ton of info on the Harvey thing in the media maybe a little too much. So I don’t want to write a rehash of what you have already heard but I will tell you what I know.
It actually started about a month ago when Matt started to feel some discomfort but thought nothing of it and in fact told no one, and then a couple of starts ago he noticed he was unable to get loose. But in his last two starts whatever was going on it really seemed to be having an effect on his performance and finally on Saturday he knew he had a problem when he could not extend his arm fully and having trouble with the hanging of his breaking stuff. Also he lacked command on his fastball which is clear indication that his release point is off. That is when he decided to talk to one of the trainers about it. He was sent to the doctor who told him the bad news that he had a tear which left him completely shocked it was the last thing he expected it to be he thought it was a simple inflammation, no big deal. No one knew Matt was having difficulty not even John Buck who had no idea Harvey was dealing with an injury this severe.
He only knew Matt was having some soreness which is why he thought Harvey's sliders didn't have the same punch on Saturday it usually has but he didn't believe anything was up.

What happens next is Matt will sit and rest for about two weeks maybe a bit longer so the inflammation can go down a bit. The doc cannot see just how bad the tear is until then. Once he returns for that second MRI the decision can be made about Tommy John surgery something Matt wants no part of he wants to try and rehabilitate the problem away and as of today believes in his heart that he can do that and get back on the mound. Unfortunately just about everyone I spoke with and I spoke to many say that the surgery is pretty much a given and that he will have no choice but don’t tell Harvey that he just does not want to hear it. Of course I am going with Matt here no sense dwelling on the surgery till we know for sure; he is a big strong kid and me like Matt want to hold out hope. So I am not going to speculate on what would happen if he had the surgery, besides I am sure you heard that from just about every sportscaster out there. No, I will hold that till Matt says if he will or won’t have the surgery in about two weeks or so. I will have plenty to write about concerning pitch counts and limits how this affects Wheeler and a lot more but not ill Harvey makes that big decision, I need to stand by him and not jump the gun and talk about what might or could happen next that can wait till later. Of course that could change I know he went home feeling that way y last night but I am anxious to see how he feels about it all today after it has all settled in his mind.
One of the first people he spoke to after he got then news yesterday was his great friend John Buck and during the game you may have seen this touching moment between the catcher and his pitcher. Yeah that’s Murph photo bombing in the back

The plan expected to be announced any moment now is that Robert Carson, Matt den Dekker and Anthony Recker are going to be promoted. Recker and Carson are now on the 40-man roster, den Dekker is not. Carson would take Harvey’s roster spot. As to den Decker the Mets need to add him to the 40-man roster before this winter to protect him from Rule 5 draft in December. It gets clearer when you think about it cause with Jeremy Hefner, Jenrry Mejia and Matt Harvey and maybe Josh Edgin and Bobby Parnell all lost for the season, the Mets can free up one active roster spot and five more 40-man spots by placing each of them on the 60-day disabled list. That would give em flexibility to add den Dekker, as well as guys like Jacob deGrom, Cory Vaughn, Allan Dykstra, Darrell Ceciliani and Jeff Walters, keep in mind that all of those guys would also need to be added to the 40-man roster in the short-term. Then there is the possibility of adding Tim Byrdak who can help us in the bullpen. I should point out that doesn’t mean any of them will be promoted when rosters expand. As soon as I hear from KB or Recker about what is happing for sure and when I will fill you guys in.
Back to Anthony Recker, he and Kirk Nieuwenhuis were crushed by the Harvey news Kirk and Matt are close friends and Anthony admires Matt so much, Tony had a great day otherwise with a two-run homer. And something to chew on with the waiver trade deadline Saturday Reckers return could mean a change for John Buck, just thinking ahead here Buck and Matt Harvey have a good relationship, they worked closely together and we always figured the Mets would want to try and re-sign Buck. Now however if things do not go well for Harvey it would make Buck expendable. Of course they could always sign Buck back as a free agent maybe as a mentor to our young pitching staff.

Other pitching news is that after receiving a second opinion on his torn MCL is looking like Jeremy Hefner will need Tommy John surgery after all.

Bobby Parnell also saw the doctor again yesterday and he was told that he is progressing, but no decision yet on if he will undergo surgery to repair that herniated disc in his neck. Bobby is going to have a few more doctor visits within the next two weeks, and then decide about surgery. Bobby understands that not having surgery could mean that the disc could pop again, but he just is not convinced he should have the operation. He is concerned about the rehab length and if he would be ready for spring training and most importantly he worries about losing range of motion and how it might affect his pitching

So how about some good news, David Wright will heading to Port St. Lucie probably on, on Thursday to begin baseball activities David just has a few things to tie up here before he goes. David has started baseball activities, taking some groundballs and running in the outfield and such here at Citi Field.

Great vid with Buck and Harvey, it's just gotta be so much to process. With the Mets it almost seems inevitable that a tiny problem blows up into very devastating ones for the club. I respect sonny's wish not to really speculate much until the swelling goes down on Matt's elbow and they can tell what damage has been done to the elbow. But as a lot of people have pointed out, including Sandy Alderson this absolutely does not rank as career threatening if the surgery is done. Even Stephen Strasburg of the Nats has had it done and usually though it takes a year or so depending on the severity of the tear and how quick individually the healing process. Matt Harvey still has a LOT of great memories to give Mets fans waiting in his right arm.. it's a rough setback, and it's never good to contemplate a long recovery where all the cheers have to be put on hold but Matt's GONNA be back and better than ever.


Best of luck to Jeremy Hefner who definitely is undergoing Tommy John surgery, same thing though it's a setback and it sucks but his chances to return to the rapidly improving pitcher he was until the All Star break are very good after the elbow heals and he rehabs... especially since it too was a partial, not total tear which of course requires the most lengthy rehab. Jennry Mejia should be good as new after his bone spurs are removed from his elbow, he stands to be healthy and look promising going into the new season. I understand why Bobby Parnell is so reluctant to undergo surgery, it being a more delicate, riskier procedure in terms of affecting his pitching motion and delivery. Hopefully he can get rest to heal his disk issues sufficiently and possibly get on a program to minimize the possibility of a relapse of the disk injury.

And definitely great to hear David is getting closer and shortly will be rehabbing in St. Lucie, maybe get a couple of games in(sonny would know better than me how rehab like that works).

I like John Buck but glad Anthony Recker will be returning( and ecstatic to finally see Matt den Dekker making his regular season MLB debut). Travis d'Arnaud is going to be getting the bulk of the playing time and I think at this point in his career John Buck may still want to be a first string catcher for a couple more years so while it would be great to see John finish the season with the Mets and not be waiver dealt by August 31, after this year I would love seeing the Mets going with Travis as the regular catcher for 120-130 games and Anthony Recker has done everything Terry Collins and his teammates would want in his chances that he would be a very good backup and I think the guys do like working with him.

So that’s done, The Mets have traded to the Pittsburgh Pirates Marlon Byrd and John Buck I sorta expected Buck to go after the Harvey news.
We get Dilson Herrera who is an infielder mostly played second and short but also plays third. We also get another player to be named later. I am sure more will be announced today with den Dekker, Recker and Carson who will all be active tonight.

I read earlier today after I had posted this morning that Marlon Byrd had been claimed by one team on the waiver wire, now we know it's the Pittsburgh Pirates. Sad to see Marlon and John Buck go so quickly, as Marlon was playing great for us driving in runs and being a power source and Buck with his handling of the young pitching staff. Herrera, the player the Mets got from the Pittsburgh organization is a couple of years away but he may have a really nice upside.... you don't get a superstar in this kind of trade but he played in the Pirates Futures game, was hitting .265 with 11 homers and over 50 RBI and could be a good, solid young piece which our Mets desperately need among the position player depth. I am here at Citi Field the clubhouse is still closed so I am juts hangin with Jay. Matt Harvey now officially on the 15-Day DL, I will hang here till the boys arrive from Vegas can’t wait to see Tony and Matt again. Have not seen Matt in way to long he will bring a lot of excitement to our outfield to be sure. Don’t know Carson much never had much interaction with him. I joked with sarcasm to Jay “sooo does this mean another freakin upside down p? and did we trade the Marlon Byrd t-shirts to Pittsburgh for bobbleheads to be named later as well.”
He just looked up and rolled his eyes.

KB is in the car and on his way here expected any minute can’t wait to get his take on the moves. One player did tell me while he is happy for Recker and den Decker the feeling about Byrd and Buck is not so much happy. Just another day of WTF
KB also said there will be a live Sandy Alderson & Terry Collins' news conferences at 4:00 on SNY.
