NY Mets 2014

No shocker at all with what happened Valverde.. or other closers including David Robertson of my Yankees. You can only do the dance of putting people on base and getting away with it for so long. It's why Detroit gave him the boot and he was in limbo until this year.
As for Granderson, one of the nicest guys in baseball but a strikeout machine not worth the four years he got.

A lot of truth to both observations, Ninja. Valverde isn't someone who can be counted on as a closer... if you don't put em away you leave thedoor open and Valverde does that way too many times for comfort.

I'm also not sold on the wisdom of giving a strikeout machine a contract so generous in Granderson's case. Great teammate, great person like Jason Bay was... hopefully not the same results essentially on the field but he really concerns me.

We did get a couple of good years out of Granderson but towards the last two years, he had injuries and was the last person you wanted to see in a spot to score.
Three pitches is all it would take.
Granted, the guy we away for him has proven to be a strikeout machine as well in the postseason so Detroit can't gloat too much.

Yep, Grandy was great the first couple of years hitting at least 40 homers. The average started to suffer greatly though and as mentioned the strikeouts started piling up. Hopefully he can get healthy quick and prove better but as of now it's a real concern he ever lives up to the contract he got from the Mets.

Terrific victory in Arizona last night, 9-0 for our boys over the Diamondbacks. Combined three hit shutout featuring yeoman relief work from Germen Gonzalez for three innings and Kyle Farnsworth in the last inning after starter Jennry Mejia had to leave after 5 due to a burst blister in one of the fingers on his pitching hand. Jenney was near masterful allowing only two hits while walking two, striking out three and showing an impressive array of pitches mixing a consistent low 90's fastball with curveballs and other off speed gems that had Diamondback batters flummoxed and frustrated. Hopefully the burst blister will not cause him to miss more than one start.

Hurray for Captain Kirk as with Juan Lagares put on the 15 day disabled list as the Mets recalled Kirk Nieuwenhuis from AAA Las Vegas and he was great getting three hits and 3 RBI including crushing a two run homer and made a couple of stellar defensive plays. I'm sure Sonny is beaming from ear to ear about his pal's first game back and even in the postgame they were noting his swing was better and he had a good plan at the plate. With Juan Lagares out for two weeks it's imperative Kirk can make some noise at the plate and hopefully strengthen his position in the organization. Daniel Murphy and Eric Young continue to form a great 1-2 punch at the top of the lineup, Andrew Brown had a fine day as well with a single and 2 RBI. Maybe a sweep this afternoon to end the road trip on a happy note.. the Mets are now 7-7 and after a horrible start they have shown fight and the pitching, even the relief which had been terrible early, has held up very well. Like syam says, "Let's go, Mets!"

Now that’s more like it! Our boys finally getting aggressive at the plate instead of taking so many pitches. So much fun to watch the Mets these last couple of days Of course beatin the pants off Mets killer Arroyo was just the cheery on top of the cake just great to watch. The Mets did what they needed to do and that is beat up on the weaker teams.

As saucy mentioned we did have few hiccups with both Jenrry Mejia and Granderson coming out. Looks like Juan will get the worst of it although the hamstring sprain is not severe he will be out at least 15 days and then we will see. Granderson should be back on Friday his hurts was not as bad as it might have been. I am no Granderson fan but ya don’t want to see him hurt just maybe start producing more at the plate is all I ask. Let’s face it he has not gotten the job done he was supposed to be in there in the cleanup spot to protect Wright maybe force the pitchers to pitch to David instead of pitching around him in late innings as they have been doing but Grandy ain’t getting that done. I dono maybe he needs to play somewhere else in the lineup cause he seems uncomfortable in the 4 hole. Didn’t he bat second for the Yankees? But the upside is that Kirk Nieuwenhuis got the call from AAA and yes Saucy I was real excited bout that. Kirk has the talent to be one of the great ones he just hasn’t had any luck with injuries and for some reason although he killed in the minors struggled in the majors but not yesterday Kirk Nieuwenhuis had a big day going 3-for-5 with a homer and three RBIs and made a couple of awesome catches in right-center. Not sure how long he will be up here after Young comes back on Friday; Chris has been killin em in rehab playing really well so who will be the odd man out in the outfield we shall see. I am a big fan of Captain Kirk want very much for him to have the success he deserves he is also a good friend; just don’t play Air Hockey with him cause I dono how but he cheats :p

I feel the most bad for Lagaras who has really been gettin er done for us batting .320 and doin an outstanding job in the outfield we wish him a speedy recovery.

After the game this afternoon the Mets will fly home have an off day tomorrow and then get set to face the Braves again on Friday. The off day will be good for the guys after that road trip; Murphy’s first order of business will be to put the final touches on the nursery in his home and await the arrival of his wife and son. Just waitin for the final ok from the doc for Tori to travel she is still down in Florida with mom who is a nurse. Can’t wait to meet little Noah. Some of the guys will be going to a children’s hospital in Long Island to bring cheer to those kids something the boys often do.

One of the guys who will miss Arizona is KB who loves to hiked and made good use of the trails out there.

This afternoon a few changes to the lineup against the righty, Davis will play first Recker will catch day game after a night game Dillon Gee on the mound.

I have been very vocal about my choice for the first base job wanting it to go to Ike but ya have to give it to Lucas who has been doing a really nice job out there and of course we know what he can do with a bat. I have known him a while and I am sure I mentioned what a quiet reserved and shy kid he is does not say much but he has been losing up a bit lately as witnessed by the great interview with Kevin talking about the day he hit two triples; watch Duda being Duda.

Great pic of KB, sonny.... really looks like he loves the place and what great views with desert, mountains, valleys.... Arizona is gorgeous! LOVED Lucas' description of how he achieved getting those two triples, lol! He really has a fun, deadpan personality and sense of humor and I hope he gets more comfortable and shows it more. Definitely had KB in stiches it was so funny!

I really do hope Ike gets the job in the long run but if Lucas continues to play well and earn the job I'll be fine with that. Just so tough rooting for one over the other when they're both really good guys.

Sweep in Arizona!!!!!:D Dillon Gee was excellent going seven scoreless innings only giving up three hits, no walks and three strikeouts leading the Mets to a 5-2 win to close out the road trip. Closer Jose Valverde got some work in the ninth inning and wasn't good allowing two runs on three hits so there's still some nervousness on my part about his ability to handle the closer role over the remainder of the season. Hopefully he steps up or someone, even if it's Kyle Farnsworth who's been reborn since a less than stellar spring training can handle the role until we get regular closer Bobby Parnell back next spring.

Eric Young continues to run aggressively and be the sparkplug for the Mets having a hit and stealing two bases upping his total already to 9 and scoring a run. I read a story in which Terry Collins told Eric if he got his on base percentage to .350 he'd score 120 runs with his aggressiveness and daring and it's already up to .360.

Daniel Murphy and David Wright keep up the hot top of the order both with two hits and an RBI. Anthony Recker added a couple of hits including a booming solo homer.

Yup Saucy we were all happy to see KB get Duda to show a side of him you rarely see him loosen up and be playful and funny. When he first came to camp none of us knew what to make of him he was so quiet and shy rarely said a word, in fact in the first days following Duda’s arrival Wright playfully quipped “Does he talk”? After a while Lucas began to get more comfortable and open up more we found out he is smart and can be very funny ya just have to get to know him. If you look back at some of his early interviews he seemed like he was scared to death and that is because he was, but over time he has learned to like and trust more especially Kevin and the result is the video I posted. Yes KB had a great trip he is a big time hiker and made good use of the trails out west. Kevin is proficient at many sports and having shot hoops with him many times I can tell you he is an awesome basketball player as well; so by the way is Gary Cohen.
I keep hearing Eric Young doesn’t get on base enough or his batting average is too low some have even said he shouldn’t be an everyday player and the 4th outfielder. But what about his speed not much is said about that except of course the guys at SNY; and what about stolen bases don’t they produce runs? Eric is currently 4th in the Major Leagues in Runs Scored and 2nd in the Majors in stolen bases plus EY has stolen 9 bases and has yet to be caught and has scored 5 times after attempting a steal. EY. has scored at least one run in seven of his last eight games, during which the Mets are 5-3. He had all nine of his stolen bases on the last road trip. Bobby O will be talking about EY before the game tonight. I love what Eric brings us and tired of the fools in the media (not SNY) who say he should be the one dropped when Chris Young gets back on Friday. That outfield, which by the way we lead the National League with a .991 fielding percentage, position will be a hard one to make for sure but Eric needs to play, Lagares when he returns needs to play and I really want Kirk Nieuwenhuis who In two games has 3 H, 4 RBI and a Homer he needs to stay and not be sent back unless of course he ends up as a bench player than I say let him return to the minors where he can play every day and continue to build up his skills. Of course that begs the question what do we do with Granderson who is batting just .167 this season; we can’t put him on the shelf and let him rot in a bench spot bad enough we are doin that with Ike. Curtis has got to start producing he is a liability in that cleanup spot we need to move him to another position and see what happens we need to do that now
Anthony Recker has been on fire in his few at bats and it is time to start giving him more playing time I do like the way d’Arnaud calls games and works so well with his pitchers all of them love the guy so there is that but he also needs to get his bat working cause as important and good his defense skills are his offense sucks and needs to improve. Recker is also more than capable of calling a good game but unlike Travis he adds a solid offense to his game as well. More playing time for Anthony please.
So we had a darn good road trip at 6-3 and getting to .500 but that is pretty much what we often have it is at home that we start to fail and play poorly seriously WTF is that about anyways? So maybe we are off to a new and better time of it at home the next 10 games will prove that for sure with the Braves Cards and Marlins coming up. Our starting pitching has been pretty darn good if you forget what Colon did last outing which was awful; Gee has been strong as has Niese and Wheeler has found his command; our pen has been up and down but they have showed some signs of life on the road trip so I have hope it will continue. Valverde remains a big question of course but over all I don’t shake and quiver every time one of our starters comes out and hands the ball to the pen well….not as much as I used to anyways. Our starters have got to go deep into games that a given something I hope to see more of in coming weeks.

Tonight we host the red hot Braves with Niese on the mound tonight on pre-show Kevin will discuss Braves success. As expected Chris Young will be activated from the DL no word yet on who will be set down top secret lineup card won’t be known till just before game time

Jason Heyward not playing tonight I’m sure it is cause he is 1-for-18 against left-handed pitching this season and nothing to do with Jon Niese breaking Jason’s jaw, what????? Too soon :p

So in the above post I called tonight’s lineup secret till a few minutes ago the reason is they had a trade going and it is Ike Davis who is going to the Pirates for pitcher Zack Thornton

I am headin out to get more from Ike he is headin to Pittsburg I want to catch up with him and get more info
Be back tomorrow with all the details but there will be a lot of sad players in the club tonight Ike was so loved. I have mixed emotions about this but
I will want to speak with Ike and see how he feels before I comment anymore

OMG SONNY!! Just heard Ike is being traded to the pirates!!! NO!!!

I was down after such a great end to the road trip the Mets come home and let Aaron Harang of all people (one of the auditioners last year for the fifth spot in the rotation) no hit them through seven innings, while giving up six walks! Mets avoid the embarrassment of getting no hit at home because David Wright got the only hit of the game for our boys. Jon Niese did his job going six innings allowing one run on four hits, three walks and seven strikeouts. Germen Gonzalez though got bombed for four runs on four hits in less than an inning of work after such great recent performances.... maybe going to the well too much and don't want to risk burning him out so early in the season. It's just unfathomable how the Mets come home after looking so good recently and just have no life.... losing a 6-0 one hitter to Atlanta was bad enough...

THEN I just read Ike Davis has been traded to the Pirates for a perhaps solid young reliever and a player to be named later yet I'm so bummed:(... had a reaction like gtru it was like NOOOOOO! Seems like sonny and Ike were bummed too but weren't really surprised the Mets finally pulled the trigger. Hope Ike does really well and prove himself like we know he can,and the players we get back from the Pirates can be solid contributors at least with some good potential. I'll wait til sonny writes about what he and Ike talked about before I comment further on the trade but sonny has always mentioned how Ike is loved by the guys and you can see the support he has it's just sad, really wish he could have proven himself here. I really do hope for the best with Lucas Duda and it's imperative he really start to play consistently confident. He doesn't need to play outside of himself and try to drive the ball all the time, he's a big guy who has more than enough power naturally he can drive it a long way when he gets his pitch. He's a good guy, too and like that he is opening up and hope that he continues to grow and develop personally and professionally.

Ike Davis had a good debut going two for three with the Pirates going against the Brewers with a double and single. Saw him in a picture greeting Pittsburgh infielder Cliff Barmes and damn it was strange seeing him in a Pittsburgh uniform, with that cap too. Still feel very sad seeing he's gone and in a different uniform now.:( The Pirates lost 8-7 on a game winning two run homer by Ryan Braun, his second homer of the game but glad to see Ike making a good first impression tonight.

My Mets...:( Yep they had fight tonight but offense other than David Wright's RBI single early was non existent but Mets made a nice comeback in the eighth on RBI by Chris Young and Travis d'Arnaud to close the gap to 4-3. However Jose Valverde served up a meatball to BJ Upton who crushed a three run homer in the ninth putting the Mets again behind the 8 ball at 7-3. David Wright in the bottom of the ninth put the Mets back in it with a two run double but not enough even after chasing Atlanta closer Craig Kimbrel the rally ended with the bases loaded and Travis D' Arnaud making the last out with the final being Braves over the Mets 7-5. Truly a frustrating game as Bartolo Colon gives up three runs in seven innings of work pitching solidly, giving up eight hits but working out of trouble. Again though the bullpen gives pause after such a terrific stretch with the awful showing of Germen Gonzalez and now tonight another distressing effort by Jose Valverde with the three run homer surrendered. After all the good feeling sweeping Arizona the Mets come home and inexplicably continue to put up stinkers.... Bats either become feeble or bullpen just gives awful performances. Don't understand it.:(

Sonny is going to Pittsburgh or a few days to help Ike out moving in and giving him support as he adjusts to his new situation... he told me he'll have a lot more to say once he speaks with Ike and can come home in a few days. Sonny works at his dad's business but dad is a huge Mets fan and understands and appreciates the great friendship since his minor league days Sonny developed with Ike and totally supports him being there for his friend, as his now ex-Met teammates can't just leave and be there for him right now playing at home. Definitely looking forward to what he has to say regarding the Ike move and the current state of the Mets when he gets back.

Bryce Harper being pulled today by rookie manager Matt Williams (former great San Francisco Giants third baseman) was absolutely the right decision in a game against St. Louis for not hustling after a ground out... he barely even made an attempt to run and it just shocks me because he's known for going all out. Whatever motivated his lack of hustle it's a strong and gutsy statement right off the bat Williams benching the young star afterwards.. he said in spring training they're all going to be about hustle and effort and a good thing that resulted from this is that Harper did agree it was the right thing for Williams to have done. You expect the best out of everyone, you don't just make an example of lesser players but even the biggest stars on the team or you won't have the respect of everyone. You nip prima donna attitudes in the bud by not tolerating ANYONE's crap so good on Matt Williams for making sure Bryce Harper knows things are expected of everyone including him and there are no shortcuts or favorites who can get away with bending or breaking rules because no one ever called them out on their crap.

Mets win the final game of the Atlanta series in 14 innings 4-3 and get a new acting closer in Kyle Farnsworth though former acting closer Jose Valverde pitched well getting the win after pitching the last inning. Zack Wheeler started and wasn't great but solid, six hits and three runs given up in six innings. Bullpen was rock solid save for a shaky bit by Germen Gonzalez just replacing Wheeler in the seventh but there was no damage done. Biggest at bat of the year so far for Curtis Granderson who won the game in the bottom of the 14th with a sacrifice fly that scored Kirk Nieuwenhuis... a lot of genuine fan frustration for his strikeout prone, sub .150 batting average going into the game but for one day at least he brought smiles to Mets players and fans, not frowns and looks of disgust.

I'm not sure the move to Farnsworth as closer will be the last closer move Terry Collins makes but after several appearances where Jose Valverde gave up booming doubles and homers the Mets skip felt he had to make a change and see if Farnsworth could continue to give consistency in his appearances.

Ike Davis had a good debut going two for three with the Pirates going against the Brewers with a double and single. Saw him in a picture greeting Pittsburgh infielder Cliff Barmes and damn it was strange seeing him in a Pittsburgh uniform, with that cap too

Ike Davis first home run as a Pirate a Grand Slam and his 2nd one this season

Shimmy me timbers I'm a pirate now and king of the open sea and the Grand Slam

Oh yeah baby that sucker is gone!

Yay... two grand slams in the same month for Ike, and ironically both were against the Reds! Feel really good for Ike, though I really am having a hard time thinking of him as a Pittsburgh Pirate he'll be fine if he does like the second half of 2012 and hits his pitches and let the game come to him.. hit 32 homers that year, 26 from June on so he'll punish a lot of pitchers. Good to see him contribute strongly to his first win with his new club!:D Thanks for the great Ike pics, sonny!

Great win for the Mets last night against the Cards, a pitching battle they won 2-0 with a very good effort by starter Jennry Mejias, all recovered from his blister problem from his last start which pulled him early. Goes six and two thirds innings allowing only four hits, no runs, three walks and seven strikeouts as his fastball dazzled to go with his strong assortment of secondary pitches. Good relief work capped by the solid save by new closer Kyle Farnsworth.

Mets got their offense from David Wright who had a hit and an RBI as did Travis d'Arnaud with two hits and an RBI who hopefully is getting more comfortable at the plate after such a horrible start and will start becoming more the .280-.300 type hitter with power everyone expects from his minor league development. Nice kid who just needs confidence, he's doing a solid job defensively which I'm sure in the team's mind is the most important thing for him to work on now being a catcher and having the confidence of the pitching staff.

Curtis Granderson still hasn't found his swing yet though whiffing another three times... Curtis, you ain't in Yankee Stadium anymore and should re-adjust your swing accordingly!

As Sausy said a very nice win by the Mets last nite. A solid pitching effort from Mejia and the bullpen, which seems to have settled in a bit after the rough opening series. Valverde will bear watching, but he did get the win Sunday with a good inning. Nice to see Ike be successful. Will be a tough series with the Cards, but we got the first one, so Lets go Mets!! and get a few more.

Have to mention despite his hitting troubles Ruben Tejada had two sparkling fielding plays, topped by a beautiful double play with Daniel Murphy which was particularly dazzling!

So what I've been able to read about the speculation of who the "player to be named later"in the Ike trade is that it could be someone the Pirates drafted in the 2013 mlb draft. Those draftees cannot be included in trades until after this years draft, so we may not know until sometime in June. The Bucs drafted two shortstops, one from high school and one from college in the 5th and 6th rounds, and at least one reporter is speculating the Mets will receive one of those dudes. Let's go Mets!!
