Trading with Cuba will just put more money into the hands of the rulers and prolong the dictatorship. In the past, when the Castros have had money they used it to support communist subversives in other countries. The sent an army to Angola, troops to Granada, Nicaragua, Bolivia etc.

The analogy may be closer than you think. China is using profits from sales to American to build a huge, hostile military. It seems bent on confrontation with the US after we go broke.

Remember, Nixon opened relations with China as a strategy to loosen the alliance between China and USSR. And the US supported the Castro revolution at first, before Castro announced that he was a communist, allied with USSR. The Nixon Castro photo dates from that early period, I think.
