President Obama will speak to the nation tonight

about ISIS, terrorism plus

IMO, this is the President's achilles heel - he's completely dropped the ball as it relates to the vacuum created in the Middle East - yes, it was not HIS war but ISIS has grown on HIS watch and frankly "it's the others guys fault" is a losers argument not befitting of a President

Lame duck or not, time to get tough and smart or make that smart and tough about how to eradicate the world from the Islamic terrorists

And, even more importantly the President needs to assure and reassure a scared public about what we're doing, what we will do and why

That's the President's job - his primary job

Looking forward to seeing if he steps up here

Jesus wept. What do you think Obama is? Captain America?

BushCo. broke the middle east so badly that there's no way the US can fix it. All the 'fixing' is doing is radicalizing more and more disaffected, angry young men and women who only see the US and Europe, having created all of these fake states out of colonies and territories following the partition of the Ottoman empire, still fighting over the oil and the strategic position of the region.

It is absurd that America is scared and needs reassurance. Why? Because a couple of people shot up and killed 14 folks at a party?
After over 350 other mass shootings in the country this year thant have left hundreds dead and wounded?

What you are effectively saying is that the US is blind to the enemy within....but like a lot of others running their mouths on TV over the last few days, there seems to be some sort of bizarre relief that this one can be called terrorism because it deals with a foreign existential threat.

If Obama really wanted to step up, he'd take executive action to sort out the NRA.

But he won't because it would be quite literally a death sentence for him and the Democrats.

So he'll make the same reassuring, empty noises that he has made before and that Bush and all the Presidents over the last few decades have used.

Only the most intellectually limited and cynical would propose that the US can defeat ISIS. All that is going to happen is that ISIS will morph into the next generation of terrorists. As I've noted in many threads, there is big business in terrorism and war and all the parties, including the US are financing and arming terrorists every day in order to play out some sub-agenda between the Saudis and Emirates, China, Russia and the West.

Business is business.

there was some talk of the President utilizing his execute powers to at least impose stronger background checks

The proposed executive action aims to impose background checks on individuals who buy from dealers who sell a significant number of guns each year. The current federal statute dictates that those who are “engaged in the business” of dealing firearms need to obtain a federal license — and, therefore, conduct background checks — but exempts anyone “who makes occasional sales, exchanges, or purchases of firearms for the enhancement of a personal collection or for a hobby, or who sells all or part of his personal collection of firearms.”

Not sure what happened there and I don't think it'd be a death knell

If the checks of gun purchasers are like the "checks" of refugees, ( nudge, nudge, wink, wink,) gun sales will continue to sky rocket.

Your refugee and immigration rate is low, relative to historic levels.
Stop making stuff up.

By the way, Obama's speech was an epic FAIL.

OOH, I see we've had a tobymeryn drive by trolling.

1 million LEGAL immigrants last year alone. I wouldn't call that low.

Which is 40th in terms of net migration per capita. Nothing much compared to historic rates.

Racists in countries 1-39 probably decry migrants as much as those in the countries that suffer diaspora.

For many, bringing in more refugee, impossible to investigate, while disarming Americans, does not seem reassuring. It is not a solution to the problem, but an aggravation. He makes Trump seem almost reasonable by comparison.

^ But of course you'd say that someone as unhinged as Trump sounds reasonable. He is speaking your language when he goes off on rants based on total ignorance and lack of true facts.

Obviously the pres is as dismissive of the safety of Americans as you are.

ISIS is a ongoing crisis but certainly not Americas greatest threat.
Repub will try, and fail, to deflect responsibly for the mess they have created. Bush destroyed the GOP more than anyone realizes.

Sanders and Hillary share your indifference, no doubt. If there are more terrorist incidents, it may be too late to convince the public that they are suddenly serious.

Hmm why would they need to do that. Strange.

Btw...How did that Iraq war go over for you guys?
And thank you for hooking Hillary onto that.

Well, there's still all those mass shootings to deal with too, as well as unemployment, poverty and the ongoing effects of a banking crisis to deal with.

Single issue governments fall apart quickly.
