* * * * CHAPTER FOURTEEN * * * *

Unfortunately, the slowing of time only applied to Derek and Dominick’s drive up to Brooklyn. It felt like their last weekend together vanished before their eyes. Dominick took one last deep breath of the New York air as he stepped out onto the sidewalk of the airport.

Derek quickly exited the vehicle as well, coming around to hug Dominick. The security officers darted toward them, reminding Derek sternly that there was no parking allowed. Derek ignored them and embraced Dominick for a solid minute. It wasn’t until the security officers were in arms reach of them that Derek let go.

“Please call me when you get home safely!” Derek instructed.

“I will.” Dominick promised.

The view of the city lights as the plane departed made Dominick’s stomach sink. He didn’t have the urge to cry this time. He had been bracing himself for this moment so much that he was practically numb.

“Back to real life…” Dominick told himself as the plane touched down hours later. As soon as he turned his phone back on, he received a text message from Derek.

Derek: Make it home safe?
Dominick: Yep!
Derek: You didn’t call me, jerk!
Dominick: I just landed! Sheesh! What are you doing up so late? Don’t you work tomorrow?
Derek: Yeah. I just wanted to make sure you made it home in one piece. Sooo… Brooklyn move?? :)
Dominick: I’m scared!
Derek: Don’t be. :)

Dominick didn’t know how to respond. What he wanted and what he thought was right weren’t the same. As much as the fantasy of him and Derek excited him, it was just that: A fantasy.

He couldn’t picture life going back to normal, though. Could he just fall back into the same old routine? The same people and places every day? Not without feeling just as dead as he did before Derek stepped into the picture.

The next morning Dominick texted Derek as soon as he woke up.

Dominick: Hey, can you call me when you get a minute?
Derek: Sure. Everything okay?
Dominick: Everything is perfect. :)
Derek: Okay! I’m taking lunch in a couple hours. I’ll call you then.

Derek called as soon as he stepped out for lunch.

“Hello, darling.” Derek greeted Dominick with a silly tone.

“You’re a dork!” Dominick laughed, “So, uh… I have some good news.”

“What ever could it be?” Derek pretended to be in suspense.

“I’m looking for jobs in Brooklyn!” Dominick announced.

“I knew you’d love it! Are you as excited as I am??” Derek asked, the excitement ringing in his voice.

“Yeah! I have to admit, I’m a little nervous still. But I’m really excited, too.” Dominick assured.

“Well we’ll go over the details this weekend, okay? Everything will work out, I promise!” Derek guaranteed.

“Okay, I’ll talk to you then!” Dominick answered.

“I’d like to think I’d hear from you before then!” Derek laughed.

“Of course! I’ll text you right now, in fact.”

“Good. I’ll talk to you soon, then.”

“Alright. Have a good three minutes until my text arrives!” Dominick joked.

“You too!”

“Byyyyye!” Dominick almost sang. He took the phone away from his ear and almost hit the “End” button, but heard something else from the speaker.

“Sorry, what was that?” Dominick asked.

“Sorry, that was probably random. I, uh… I said I love you.” Derek stuttered.

“I love you, too.”

* * * * CHAPTER FIFTEEN * * * *

If it were possible for time to move faster and slower at the same time, that was Dominick and Derek’s world for the next two months.

Derek was happy to report that Aunt Cindy was quite fond of Dominick and offered for him to stay with them in her home until they could get established. On top of that, Derek’s parents were planning a visit to Brooklyn in September to bring the remaining items from Derek’s room along with Amber and her belongings. His father offered to drive Dominick and even tow his car as well.

Everything was lining up for them. Everything except for Dominick’s job hunt, that is. The vendor with the office in Brooklyn was unable to hire Dominick due to an anti-recruiting clause that was incorporated into their contract with his current employer.

Furthermore, Dominick’s personal life was jumping from one extreme to another. Most of his friends and family were outraged at the news of his plans to move with Derek. Although some of them came around eventually, Claire and Dominick’s mother did not.

In a lot of ways, Dominick had switched to autopilot. He knew what he wanted and he wouldn’t let anything or anyone influence him otherwise, no matter how ugly things got.

Dominick still had Derek to rely on, though. They were texting each other constantly and spoke on the phone for at least an hour each day. Sometimes they didn’t even talk. They’d just lay there with their ear to phone listening to music or watching the same movie.

Dominick noticed small changes in Derek’s conversations. Now instead of “his” plans, it had become “our” plans. Any time Derek talked about the future, whether it was a week, a year, or a decade, it was always “us” and “we”. Dominick liked the way it sounded.

It wasn’t until a few days before Dominick was scheduled to move that the fantasy cleared. Dominick was so used to hearing Derek talk about them as if they were a couple, he practically hypnotized himself into thinking it was true. That was until Derek text him with the news that he had hooked up with a coworker from a nearby branch office.

Dominick was a little thrown by the news to say the least, but he tried his best not to sound shocked or displeased. Derek could always see through Dominick’s moods, though. Even with over a thousand miles between them, he could tell every time Dominick had a bad day or had something on his mind. In some ways, Dominick thought it was cute. In other ways it was frustrating, though.

This was no exception. Derek knew immediately that something was wrong with Dominick.

“It wasn’t anything serious, Nicky. Promise. I know I treated you badly when I was in a relationship before, and ‘me and girls’ is a touchy subject for you now. But you’re my best friend and she’s just a girl. You don’t have anything to worry about, I promise!” Derek reasoned. “Do you feel better now?”

“It’s not a big deal, really.” Dominick lied.

“That would be a ‘no’ then.” Derek confirmed.

“Listen, there’s nothing you can say to make me not think about it. I’m not holding it against you, it’s just something that crosses my mind and kinda freaks me out. I mean, when I move out there you’re going to be the only one I have for a while and if things turn out like they did last time…”

“They won’t! I learned from that whole situation and I won’t let it happen again.” Derek assured.

“I think time is the only thing that will tell. No sense in getting worked up about it now.” Dominick compromised.

"Okay..." Derek dropped it, "It's kind of nice to be able to say 'See you soon!' at the end of our phone calls. It's been a long two months."

"I know. In some ways it felt like forever, but I can't believe it's finally here. Friday is my last day at work!" Dominick agreed.

"I'm excited. I'll see you soon!" Derek said. Dominick could picture his smile and the way his eyes lit up when he was genuinely happy. It was a comforting image.

"Me too, Derek. I'll see you soon!"

Interesting chapter, SayWhat. I can help but feel there is some sort of test going on. Is Derek putting up a test for Dominick? "Nicky" has to remember that Amber is coming along too. That will have to have some implications as well. The mystery is getting deeper.....lol

* * * * CHAPTER SIXTEEN * * * *

“Can you believe I’ll see you two days??” Derek exclaimed.

“Umm… About that…” Dominick frowned.

“Please tell me you didn’t change your mind.” Derek panicked.

“No! No, of course not! But there’s been a slight change in plans. Instead of leaving Monday, we’re leaving Wednesday.”

“What? Why??” Derek inquired.

“Well, my family has a tradition on Tuesday nights and my little brother asked me to hang around for one more.” Dominick explained.

“Oh.” Derek frowned.

“What’s the big rush anyway? We’re gonna be living together. Not like a couple extra days is going to make a big difference.” Dominick tried to compromise.

“Fine. Sorry if I miss you. Take all the time you need.” Derek replied. His tone was confrontational, but Dominick didn’t want to worsen the situation, so he pretended it was sincere.

“Okay. I’ll see you soon, I promise.” Dominick answered. They finished their goodbye’s and “I love you’s” before hanging up.

Dominick returned to the group of friends waiting inside the restaurant. It was the last time he’d participate in their Saturday tradition, so naturally the crowd was much larger than normal.

“Is your boyfriend surviving without you?” Phil teased.

“Fuck off!” Dominick smiled.

This had been a custom as well. Everyone in the group knew if Dominick was texting someone, it was probably Derek. And if he went outside to take a phone call, it was definitely Derek. The term “boyfriend” was thrown around a lot by everyone, including Derek’s family.

“Sounds like it’s time for a round of shots!” Lindsey announced, “Who wants a Blowjob??”

The table roared with various perverse responses and laughter. But sure enough, Lindsey returned to the table minutes later with a dozen Blowjob Shots.

“This one is for Dom because he’s leaving us soon!” Lindsey teased as she placed a shot in front of Dominick. His eyes widened when he saw the size of the glass. Instead of the standard single shot glasses, this one was in a rocks glass.

“Are you kidding me? That thing is huge!” Dominick laughed.

“Nope! Take it!!!” Lindsey cheered. The table erupted with taunts and cheers for Dominick to proceed with the shot.

He placed his hands behind his back and opened his mouth wide around the glass. With some wiggling, he finally got the entire rim of the glass in his mouth. The whole room thundered when he tilted his head back and took the shot.

“No wonder Derek keeps you around!” Phil laughed.

“Again, Phil, fuck off!” Dominick laughed as he wiped the whipped cream from his chin.

As the night finished, everyone was making rounds to hug Dominick one last time before his trip. When Claire approached Dominick, they both looked away nervously before embracing.

“I’m really going to miss you.” Claire whispered. It almost sounded like she was crying. This had been the most she said to him since they had a falling out over his decision to move.

“I’m going to miss you, too.” Dominick whispered. It was so odd to him that he didn’t feel the urge to cry once at the thought of leaving his life behind. He wondered if it was excitement overruling the sadness of it, or if it just hadn’t hit him yet. Either way, it felt too easy. He was normally awful with goodbyes.

When Dominick got home, he fell into bed after navigating the packed boxes in his room. Before falling asleep, he pulled out his phone and re-read some of the conversations he shared with Derek from the last month.

It surprised him how many times he asked Derek “Are you sure you’re 100% positive this is what you want?” but he was more comforted by the number of times Derek had replied “Nope, I’m 110% positive!”
