Official 79th Annual Academy Awards (Oscars) Thread

Re: There will be ZERO EXCITEMENT at this year's Oscars....

Abigal Breslin could win for BSA. Remember back in '93 everyone thought Winona Ryder and Rosie Perez were neck and neck to win, and out of nowhere Anna Paquin won. Also, I dont think Eddie Murphy will win (honestly I dont get the hype surrounding his performance). And even though Helen Mirren will win , regardless of age, I would love for Mirren, Dench, and Streep to cancel each other out and see Penelope Cruz walk off with the Oscar. I'm in love with her after seeing "Volver".

Re: There will be ZERO EXCITEMENT at this year's Oscars....

Or, it could be that if they don't win, it might not actually be because of racism! In the last few years they've given Oscars to Denzel, Hallie, Jamie, Morgan, etc., and that's not counting the nominations...maybe they'll think that Blood Diamond combined with The Departed gives Leonardo the edge, esp. considering that, having given Philip Seymour Hoffman the Oscar last year, they won't want two fat non-stars in a row? Or would giving Peter O'Toole his Oscar after 8 nominations be racism? And maybe they'll think that Jennifer Hudson is a flash-in-the-pan and decide not to be herded but instead give it to someone they know is a great actress with a great career ahead of her, Cate Blanchett. And maybe they'll figure that yeah, Eddie Murphy can act in a non-comedy, and so what? Djimon Hounsou gave a much more Oscary performance, shouting and crying and fighting for his lost son, plus he's built a career in dramas since starring in Amistad and been nominated before, and his win would negate any racism charges, not that it's needed at this point. Alan Arkin has been an icon for actors for 40 years, and this would be a chance to honor him, for a movie the voters loved, Little Miss Sunshine. Mark Wahlberg gave a surprising, funny, powerful performance and is the only nominee in the likely picture / director winner, The Departed. Et cetera. I think we've reached the point where the Oscars don't have to give Oscars to this or that nominee or be accused of racism. As Bill Condon said about Dreamgirls' failure to crack best picture's five: the voters liked the other movies more.

You never know... It could still be racism that decides the winner of these awards(not necessarily this one).. It is impossible to completely wipe out the chance that their will not be racism. I don't care if a black person won a few years ago or not. In years past...blacks were COMPLETELY ignored at the Oscars for their performances.

At this moment... I seriously doubt that racism will play a part in their decisions. I think we may have moved somewhat past that.. HOPEFULLY

I also don't want them to get rewards because they are black, nor do I want a white person to get the award due to their skin color.. Only TALENT

Re: There will be ZERO EXCITEMENT at this year's Oscars....

wouldn't that be fantastic if ryan gosling won for half nelson :-)

He's from my hometown, it has been all over the newspaper :P. That would be very cool if he did!

Re: There will be ZERO EXCITEMENT at this year's Oscars....

Jennifer Hudson?I like her,but I don't think she deserve the award, the other actress in Babel is better than her, just my opion:)

Oscars: anybody else want Sally Field to win?

I hope that nice Sally Field wins.

But she's not nominated.

Even so.

Re: Oscars: anybody else want Sally Field to win?

I like her and i want her to win an Emmy for Best Actress for her performance as Nora Carter on "Brothers & Sisters."

With regard to the oscars, come on man she has 2 Best Actress oscars already. That says alot.

I really want Meryl Streep to win on Sunday though :). It is possible and would be the biggest shock of the night (pleasant shock) next to the shock if Clint Eastwood wins best director.

Re: Oscars: anybody else want Sally Field to win?

Judi Dench won't attend the oscars because she says she doesnt think she will win. She will have knee surgery instead, but watch from her room.

I like Rinko Kikuchi and i would be happy if she pulled a surprize upset, because she really is good in the movie and has a sweet real life personality. However its highly unlikely anyone can stop the Hudson express. Its one of those years where even if another actor/actess is better, there is just no way they could lose. Like when Jamie Foxx won, when Don Cheadle should have for Hotel Rwanda.

Re: Oscars: anybody else want Sally Field to win?

I didn't enjoy Babel much, and I think both performances nominated from that movie are highly overrated, as is the film. Then again, so is Jennifer Hudson's performance.

Either way, out of those nominated, I think Jennifer deserves it. If anyone else were to take it, I suppose I'd like it to be Rinko or Abigail.

Re: Oscars: anybody else want Sally Field to win?

I want Meryl to win. Judi always gets nominated for anything she does. She'll have more chances if she keeps working. Guarenteed.

Re: Oscars: anybody else want Sally Field to win?

Aren't the odds in the favor of under-40-year-olds Penelope Cruz and Kate Winslett?

You have to go way back to the Pre-"Macarena" Days to find an over 40-year-old that took home Best Actress accolades.

Not really. This year is a rare exception. I would bet my life on Helen Mirren taking home the trophy.

Not enough buzz around Penelope or Kate this year.

Re: Oscars: anybody else want Sally Field to win?

I love all the best actress nominees this year, I'll be happy with whoever wins. I think it's probably going to go to Helen Mirren to recognize her great career and the fact that she's never won one. I hope Meryl wins because its been 25 years since she won one. When you think of all the amazing work shes done since she won for Sophie's Choice, its about time she won a third oscar.
I hope Abigail doesn't win for Little Miss Sunshine. She was amazing in the movie, but look at what happened to Tatum O'Neil when she won an oscar at 10. She was a pretty fucked up teenager. I think its to much success to soon, it would mess anyone up.

Re: Oscars: anybody else want Sally Field to win?

lol if Abigail won i could think of a funny speech for her.

"Wow now i have something for show and tell on Monday." Actually i had originally written that openning for Keisha Castle- Huges had she won for Whale Rider.

What would be better is if there Hellen and Meryl tied for Best Actress, that would be awesome. It's really about damn time Meryl got another Best Actress trophy.

On the ballad there should be an option for ties. Because sometimes actors/actresses are equally good and deserve recogniton.

Yay! I love ties! Helen and Meryl would be sweet, and I'd love to see Forest and Leonardo! And I could accept Jennifer Hudson a lot better if she shared it... And my wet dream: Djimon Hounsou and Mark Wahlberg!!!

Re: Oscars: anybody else want Sally Field to win?

I really want Jennifer Hudson to win, along with Babel for Best Picture.

I really hate the fact that Martin Scorsesee is a for sure winner for the simple fact that everyone feels he deserves it.

It'll feel like more of a "Lifetime Achievement Award" than a "Best Director of the Year" award.

Re: Oscars: anybody else want Sally Field to win?

Yeah, but I really feel like this year he deserves it. The Departed was very good and he did a great job with it. I hope it wins Best Picture too.

Re: Oscars: anybody else want Sally Field to win?

There are a lot of choices that the director makes that an educated moviegoer would be able to discern. Unfortunately, most people i nthe Academy aren't really aware of those--so they usually give the award to either a big name and/or the person who directed the best movie.

It's why the Director's Guild Awards are so crucial in determing who will win Best Director, and what film will win Best Picture.

Re: Oscars: anybody else want Sally Field to win?

And all I want is that Ellen does a superb job.

Re: Oscars: anybody else want Sally Field to win?

One thing to keep in mind about the DGA: it includes TV directors. Not saying that's bad or good, just that it's not the same make-up of the directors' branch of the Academy, which is comprised of only movie directors.

Re: Oscars: anybody else want Sally Field to win?

My favourites never win Oscars. I want Deborah Kerr, Thelma Ritter, Alfred Hitchcock, "Shoot the Moon", and Peter O'Toole to win.
