Official 80th Annual Academy Awards (Oscars) Thread

Re: Oscars 2008

You can't honestly be surprised. It's been getting Oscar buzz since it came out.

And made more at the box office than everything else on that list.

lol exactly! no need to be surprised!

***

Tommy Lee Jones -- "...Valley of Elah" ?!?! Did anyone see it? I wanted to but never got around to it... then the reviews really weren't the best so that had even more to do with putting it off as a "renter".

Re: Oscars 2008

NO ANGELINA! :rotflmao:

Or Keira. :rotflmao:

Love it!

Me too! And, no Julia. SCORE!!!

Have never been a fan of Keira... What is she trying to do, become the "period piece" queen?! Ughhh

I do like Angelina in serious roles, but A MIGHTY HEART, despite strong and obvious reason for being made, was not that mighty in the end...

And Julia... ugh! I used to LOVE her. And, will continue to watch whatever she is in. But, she has not made a "real" movie for so long? I am soooooo tired of her little cameo roles and voiceover work. She has been a huge disappointment for past several years. Once she won her Oscar, its been all down hill.

Re: Oscars 2008

I'm a little pissed.
Juno. WHY??? The fact that it was nominated for Best Picture, Best Actress, Best Director and Best Original Screenplay just proves how stupid the Academy is.
Juno's nomination among the Best Picture nominees could have gone to Sweeney Todd or Eastern Promises. Two vastly superior films in every way.
And Ellen Page was more annoying than Napoleon Dynamite. Her nomination should have went to either Angelina Jolie, Helena Bonham Carter and Keri Russell.

Now for the good:
I'm glad Ruby Dee got a nod for American Gangster. The film was average at best, but her performance was excellent.

Other than that, everything else was predictable.

Oscar nominated films I've seen: Atonement (A), Juno (C+), No Country For Old Men (B+), Sweeney Todd (A), Eastern Promises (A-), Elizabeth 2 (B+), Away From Her (B+), La Mome (A-), I'm Not There (D), American Gangster (B-), Gone Baby Gone (B+).

Still have to see: There Will Be Blood, Michael Clayton, Jesse James, The Savages, Valley of Elah, Charlie Wilson's War (looks terrible), Into the Wild, Lars and the Real Girl, The Diving Bell and the Butterfly

Who I think will win (not necessarily should)
Best Picture - There Will Be Blood or Atonement
Best Actor - Daniel Day Lewis
Best Actress - Marion Cotillard or Julie Christie
Best Supporting Actor - Javier Bardem
Best Supporting Actress - Cate Blanchett (who, imo, I thought was awful)

Every other race is too close or not interesting enough. Looks like its gonna be another dull ceremony. That is, if there actually is one.

I agree with your "winner" choices. I do think that Best Actress will be Julie Christie however. I liked Cate in "I'm Not There".

Re: Oscars 2008

I hope Viggo wins.

Viggo was excellent in Eastern Promises. But, I think the role itself will be "too violent" for most Academy voters... True, other violent roles have won in the past... but, This isn't a war/historical role that many people will pass violence off with as being "okay". The movie is downright brutal... gonna be hard for a lot of people to digest and award rightfully I believe.

Re: Oscars 2008

Atonement doesnt have a hope for Best Picture, since it doesnt have a nom for Director, and also because it appears to be the token 'costume drama / love story' nom.

Best Picture is between There Will be Blood and No Country.

Interesting to point out that the early favourite hasn't won Best Picture in a long time.

"Crash" was an yearly favorite its release year. But it was released in like march... by oscar season it was forgotten because of Brokeback Mountain... but then miraculously it snuck up and grabbed the best picture award... so essentially its only been like 2 years since the early favorite won....

Re: Oscars 2008

Did the Academy know about this extraordinary film directed by Tim Burton named "SWEENEY TODD"?

Guess, they didn't. Maybe they were too busy dealing with the complexities of "JUNO".

Re: Oscars 2008

I think either No Country or Blood will win. They're both nominated for editing which is a key element in winning best picture. At this point I think Blood has the momentum.

Don't discount Juno. The critics raved and it's made a lot of money for a small indie film. The entertainment media has buzzed about it more than any other film in contention for major awards.

Actors: Day-Lewis should win/Clooney may win on sentiment.
Julie Christie is beloved and probably deserves to win, but the Academy is dying to give an Oscar to Linney. Too close to call.

They often give supporting actor to someone like Hal Holbrook (old, distinguished career) If not him then Javier.

Supprting actress: Cate. They love her and would give her an award every year if they could.

I think no matter whether Old Men or Blood wins best picture, that Julian Schnabel will win best director. He's won every directing award this season I think. If not him, then Anderson for Blood.

Re: Oscars 2008

I swear Laura Linney makes a career out of being nominated at the Oscars. I adore her. Give her the award already!!!

Cate Blanchett is amazing. I hope the double nomination won't polarize the voters leaving her with nothing, like it's done in the past. She's totally amazing as an actress.

Woo Hoo No Russell Crowe, No Nicole Kidman.

How many times can the nominate Denzel Washington? He's got two awards already, and on a personal level I can' t stand him. Of course that will have no swaying power over the academy.

Thank You!!! Someone else who doesnt like Denzel Washington. I havent liked him for soooo long. Seems like he just got stuck on himself after awhile.

As for Russell Crowe-- dont like him either. But I did watch "3:10 to Yuma" recently and it was great.

As for Nicole... dont mess with her. She is my favorite!!! "Margot at the Wedding" was just too offbeat for voters! lol Great performance though.

Re: Oscars 2008

I love nicole kidman dylan, but seriously she hasn't made a decent movie since The Others.

That depends on what you consider a decent movie, ravenstar.

After "The others" she gave some strong performances in films like "The Hours", "Dogville", "Cold mountain", "Birth" and "Fur: An imaginary portrait of Diane Arbus".

Maybe those weren't box office hits, but she's far from over.

Re: Oscars 2008

She was brilliant in Margot At The Wedding. Some critics thought she might get an Oscar nod, but nobody saw the film.

Re: Oscars 2008

I love nicole kidman dylan, but seriously she hasn't made a decent movie since The Others - which I still say she should have got the Oscar for - she's been my favourite actress since I was a kid and saw her in the first movie I was allowed to go see without adults BMX Bandits. Haven't seen Margot at the Wedding. And Denzel Washington gives me gas.

Hasnt made a good movie since THE OTHERS!?

Hmmm, DOGVILLE is amazing. Sure it is hard to get through for some people since the entire movie is on an open stage with minimal props and no sets. But the story and performances all around are great!

BIRTH is one of my favorites. She received a Golden Globe nomination but not an Oscar nom. Too risque!

COLD MOUNTAIN was good... Accents needed improvement. Remember it was the front-runner for "Best Picture" nomination its year, but then was closed out, sort of like "Dreamgirls" was?!

THE HOURS is one of my absolute favorite movies ever. Book is even better but isnt that always the case. Nicole received the Oscar for her role in this!

FUR was a total love-it or hate-it movie. Sort of a "Beauty and the Beast" for adults. I, for one, loved how they portrayed the story of Diane Arbus through fantasy and fiction... and c'mon-- how many movies do you get to see where a beautiful woman, shaves a "wolf man" for lack of better words, and then fucks him?!?! lol

BIRTHDAY GIRL was very odd and somewhat unappealing overall. But Nicole's performance was excellent as a Russian mail-order bride with a dark secret.

How can you say she has not had a good movie since THE OTHERS?! All of these were released after that. Sure there have been some bad ones-- BEWITCHED, THE INVASION, THE STEPFORD WIVES, but those are like total popcorn, saturday afternoon movies. Who would expect those to be "good".
