Official 80th Annual Academy Awards (Oscars) Thread

Re: Oscars 2008

That depends on what you consider a decent movie, ravenstar.

After "The others" she gave some strong performances in films like "The Hours", "Dogville", "Cold mountain", "Birth" and "Fur: An imaginary portrait of Diane Arbus".

Maybe those weren't box office hits, but she's far from over.

I loved Birth, Cold Mountain and The Hours. She was good in Dogville but the movie was painful to watch. I've yet to see Fur. And I've heard she's good in Margot at the Wedding.
She's still one of the best actresses working today. She just needs to pick better scripts.
But I'm bothered by the fact that she feels the need to botox her face to the point where it looks like wet marble. She should also let her hair go back to its original color and ditch the ice-queen look. And give Tom Cruise shit in the press. I know people would like her more if she let him have it.

Re: Oscars 2008

"Crash" was an yearly favorite its release year. But it was released in like march... by oscar season it was forgotten because of Brokeback Mountain... but then miraculously it snuck up and grabbed the best picture award... so essentially its only been like 2 years since the early favorite won....

Technically, yes, but the film that EVERYONE was talking about in November, December, January and February never won - Brokeback Mountain.

Even taking your example into play, once in like 10-12 years isnt a particular trend.

I still think There Will Be Blood will topple the Coens for Picture, but they'll take the Director award.

Re: Oscars 2008

I finally saw SWEENEY TODD. Overall I liked it as I had nothing to compaire it to as in seeing the stage version or previous film efforts. The friends I saw it with, all being into musical theather, disliked the film... yet, did admit it was far from the trainwreck that "P.O.T.O." was.
This seems to be the ongoing theme. As a "movie" it works. But, seems as though many people who are familiar with the original versions are disappointed. Plus, the casting of Helena Bonham Carter, as pointed out by myself as well, just wasn't the greatest. I had read some time ago that Toni Collette was in first picks for the role. She would have been so much better!!! Don't get me wrong, I love Helena Bonham Carter in just about everything she does, but the role would have been better fit with Toni Collette.

Re: Oscars 2008

Laura Linney's only been nominated 3 times, I'd hardly call that a career....I love her too and would love to see her win

if she continues, it will be. she's only 10 away from Meryl Streep, or something like that.

I would like to see it go to Laura, too. As much as I like Cate, Elizabeth: Golden Age sucked. She is nowhere as good as she was in the original Elizabeth. Up to this day I still want my $9.50 back.

Re: Oscars 2008

I can't wait 'til Marion walks up and gets her Oscar.

Work!

Re: Oscars 2008

As it appears, 'No Country For Old Men' should take best picture at the Oscars. But after getting bitchslapped by all the guilds, 'Atonement' not only got nominated but won the Globe and the BAFTA, this should be interesting.

The most exciting race for me is Supporting Actress. Amy Ryan won everything prior to the Globes which Cate Blanchett won and then Ruby Dee won the SAG. So would it be a career award for Dee, Ryan for the percurors or will Blanchett pull out another Oscar for the greatest performance of her career (okay, that last bit was biased)?

Here's my quick analysis.

Locked or Pretty Close to It:
- 'No Country For Old Men' for Best Picture
- 'The Coens Brothers for Best Director
- Daniel Day Lewis for Best Actor
- Javier Bardem for Best Supporting Actor
- 'Ratatouille' for Animated Feature
- 'Juno' for Original Screenplay (ugh)
- 'NCFOM' for Adapted Screenplay

The only reason why I didn't put Julie Christie up there is because losing the BRITISH award to Marion Cotillard was a little of a set back. But she'll probably end up winning it.

Re: Oscars 2008

Crash was an okay movie. I don't agree that it was the best picture. Brokeback Mountain or Memoirs of a Geisha were much better movies that should have won.

Re: Oscars 2008

Javier Bardiem was great in No Country for Old Men. The movie was very gory. I thought the ending was stupid.

Laura Linney is a great actress who deserves to win finally. Marion Cotillard deserves to win for La Vie en Rose. She was great as Edith Piaf.

Oscars Sunday Night

Anyone have any predictions for the oscar race this year? Will there be predictable winners or will there be suprising upsets? I think Javier Bardiem will win for "No Country for old Men." I hope Laura Linney wins this year. She's a great actress who deserves to finally win an Oscar. It's all politics at the Oscars. Not always the best performances win. I think "No Country for Old Men" will win best picture.

Re: Oscars Sunday Night

You are correct, it is "all politics". Therefore I never watch and don't care. It is a celebration of self aggrandizement by a bunch of superfluous people totally out of touch with reality.

Re: Oscars Sunday Night

Cate should've won years ago for the first Elizabeth portrayal, but instead it went to Gwyneth.

But this ain't Cate's year, the second Elizabeth movie was not good at all. But she might win her 2nd Best Actress award.

Would love to see Laura win, but I doubt it.

Re: Oscars Sunday Night

I saw Atonement tonight. Haven't seen all the nominated movies, but I've seen about 3 of them and I think Atonement should win Best Picture. Hope academy voters think the same way. It was an excellent movie.

Re: Oscars Sunday Night

Who I Want to Win:
Best Picture: Atonement or There Will Be Blood
Best Actor: Tommy Lee Jones or Johnny Depp or Daniel Day Lewis
Best Actor: Julie Christie or Marion Cotillard
Best Supporting Actor: Javier Bardem
Best Supporting Actress: Amy Ryan or Tilda Swinton or Ruby Dee
Best Director: PT Anderson or Julian Schnabel
Original Screenplay: The Savages
Adapted Screenplay: Atonement or Diving Bell and the Butterfly or There Will Be Blood

Who I Think WILL Win:
Best Picture: No Country For Old Men or Juno
Best Actor: Daniel Day Lewis
Best Actress: Julie Christie or Ellen Page
Best Supporting Actor: Javier Bardem
Best Supporting Actress: Cate Blanchett or Tilda Swinton
Best Director: The Coen Brothers
Original Screenplay: Juno
Adapted Screenplay: No Country For Old Men

If Juno wins anything I've lost what little faith I had left for the Academy. That movie has no business being nominated for anything.

Re: Oscars Sunday Night

And the oscar goes to............... Ruby Dee (Ofcourse it will be for her entire career but it will still be nice to see and i doubt anyone would cry foul.

She wont be deserving but don't be shocked if Ellen Page wins Best Actress. She is after all the only American nominated of the 5 and lets face it thats the only reason Helen Hunt won her oscar that year.
