Me and my cousin were both fired from volunteering at one for being gay/black.

I mentioned this to a friend who's a doctor and he got a chuckle at the protest against cosmetic surgery at birth: there is apparently a fair number of people born with an extra finger or toe, or a pinky or little toe joined to its neighbor, and even ears not properly separated from the head, and doctors regularly fix those without even mentioning it to the parents.

That kind of freaked me out -- I've seen kittens and puppies with extra toes and such, but people? It makes me shudder....

Separating a layer of skin from its neighbors in, say, a joined finger situation isn't similar to removal of healthy tissue. And neither are similar to removal of tumors, ect, which may also involve removing what's deemed healthy tissue, provided it isn't an obstruction. All plastic surgery and the reasons for it are not the same, different consequences, circumstances and situations. Speaking as if they are shows a severe lack of common sense.

Aside from your own shuddering (which reaction is entirely on you), I can't think why you'd want to remove an extra finger, either, unless you have a glove fetish. Or to get people who're shuddering to not talk/shut the fuck up about it. Considering personal history I suspect it's mostly the latter. One of these days people'll figure out their reactions to others are their own problem.

And I still wouldn't be chuckling for doctors to be restructuring things without the express permission of either a parent or the person themselves.

I particularly wouldn't be laughing because they're not supposed to do shit without both permission and oversight. Some of those god complex's the medical field attracts need a swift kick in the ass and sturdier reigns.

It's this attitude that makes people not open about depression and mental illness. They have people who say the exact shit you did about how what they are going through doesn't matter or they shouldn't be feeling sad because they aren't going through shit. Be more empathic because you never know if you will ever be in that position. You are no immune from depression. It can pop up into your life at anytime and it can stay with you forever. Just be happy that you aren't experiencing that shit.

It was. The reason "they" gave was bullshit saying "they didn't trust us", when we went through training flawless and I was studying psychology at the time, but in actuality was due to racial and homophobic reasons.

Bitch don't test me, I'm not in the fucking mood.

No, he's right. It's part of the Master Plan to ensure that blacks and homos aren't available to help. Otherwise, gay and black suicides rates might fall. Can't have that.

Well given the general attitude you give here and your response in the other suicide thread "that if people stopped giving a fuck, suicide wouldn't be an issue" begs to question your understanding of depression that leads to suicidal tendencies or suicide.

Depression is caused due to feeling hopeless and quitting.

NO:I just got fired. I feel worthless. I'm going to kill myself.

YES:I just got fired. Fuck them, I'm filing for unemployment and I'll have to go through some adjustments, maybe get a job that isn't as aesthetically pleasing for the time being, and temporarily go on county assistance.

Thing is, usually white men (highest suicide rate in North America), hate to be in a position like that. They be damned to stand in a food pantry line, they sure as hell be damned to go on food stamps, they rather kill themselves that work at a burger stand. Fucked up.

Depression is caused by people thinking they feel alone.

NO:I'm gay and (asian, black, disabled, feminine, transgendered, from a religious family, homeless) etc. Nobody understands me. I'm going to kill myself.

YES:I'm gay and (insert predicament here), but god gave me this body and I don't want to destroy what he created. There are people in worse situations to myself. Killing myself is quitting, and if I disgust one person walking down the street, I did my job, because somebody has to be the freak and the odd one out, I feel honored for it to be me.

Depression is caused due to people giving a fuck about what others think of them.

Thing is people don't realize that you shouldn't live for the approval of others. Prove them wrong. Own their ass like I did two people in this thread. Not everyone will agree with you, but secretly in the shadows, others slowly will.

Depression leads to suicide yes, but depression is caused by people not loving themselves over trivial reasons.

Now unless you have a terminal illness or something along those lines, then I understand.

But killing yourself because you got fired, or nobody seems to relate to you is stupid.

This is what I suspect led the suicide hotline to determine that the poster in question was not likely suited for counselling work.

Yeah you SUSPECT. You don't know the true reason. I do, because I'm a living testament.

First of all there was a pre screening process by telephone. Me and my older female cousin who is lesbian, we don't sound black at all. I'm pretty sure if they could tell we were black on the phone, we would have been eliminated at this stage.

When he had our first meeting they were very aghast to find out we were black.

We were the only black and gay people in training. There were two straight asian women and a straight asian man, but other than that, the rest contained white or white passing people. Maybe two white passing latino girls.

We did a circle ice breaker on the first day to where I revealed I was gay, and she lesbian. This already lost us many brownie points from the others and they felt we were there for a negative agenda.

We weren't. I was studying psychology at the time, she was a home care health worker.

Anyways, during training they had no complaints, except they seemed shocked we were black, and they didn't seem to approve of our homosexual lifestyles, but we were dismissed halfway through training.

So to me, we were let go because of racial and homophobic reasons.
